Quick Thoughts - Blues vs Lions
General - Good solid game, both teams giving a good solid go at it. Few too many errors by the Blues in the end really hurt them but both teams had a chance. Umpiring on the other hand, god it was bad.
Blues - Gave good effort. They're still not quite there on quality but they tried and they had their chances. Burned some easy shots at goal and a few really bad turnovers under no pressure were ultimately the difference.
Curnow - Workmanlike, put work into McCluggage in the 3rd and really stopped his input, seemed to release in the last and he got back on his bike, whole time though Curnow was working hard offensively as well.
Walsh - Star, his ratio was brutal for mine, was a class above everyone else but McCluggage on the field tonight and thought he was really hard done by, especially given his only clangers were free kicks and you could certainly make a case they were all pretty harsh calls... Going to get tagged soon you'd think.
Docherty - Not sure what else he could do for his ratio, he was excellent again, going at 92%, multiple big intercept possessions, multiple scoring chains where his kick started it or made it. Just a nonsense ratio, that was a good solid 140-150 type of game.
McKay - Was big, actually blew a couple of his best chances as well but Andrews had no idea how to play him.
Williams - Probably his best game but god were his clangers brutal. Still hasn't really settled at the Blues.
SPS - Played wing tonight, he was another who made key mistakes. Would love to see some form of intensity from him, even with the ball he's laconic at best.
Jones - Was a beast, especially 2nd half. Got to be in the All Australian mix right now.
Cripps - Absolute stinker for him, would have to say that his ratio is very generous. 11 clangers genuinely feels like unders from watching the game and a 1:1 ratio in a game where Doch has a negative ratio and Walsh is barely above 1:1 is actually bewildering. Copped a knock on the knee in the 4th as well and didn't sight him pretty much after that as if owners needed more reasons for concern.
PIttonet - Got to be in trouble for his spot after that game, he was dreadful and specifically mentioned how bad their ruckwork was at HT.
Stocker - Better than his score for mine, actually played alright. The clangers will kill you on low possessions though.
Lions - Just a bit more class and by that I mean they had McCluggage who was absurd tonight, every one of his kicks that hit a target felt game breaking. They matched the Blues intensity and had a bit more quality at the end of the day. Probably the best they've played this season for mine.
Zorko - Great little junk time performance to ton up from him. He was really solid.
McCluggage - Just in another class, his ratio is decent and looking at how they graded his stats I guess it couldn't be better but he was in another class and easily the best player on the field for mine, his kicking inside 50 on another level, like all time level tonight, workrate exceptional and but for the Curnow tag in the 3rd could have gone even bigger. That tag has to be a concern moving forward with a crippled Neale and not much else.
Rich - Same old, teams just don't seem to care if he is the guy kicking it this year, it's so odd. It's not that hard to shut him down and then you're looking at Lester, Starce and Birchall as the rebounders, I know which I'd prefer.
Lyons - Just keeps working, another solid game.
Neale - Really gutsy from him, looked gone for all money and will be an amazing effort to play next week, assuming he's not suspended, but just gutsed it out. The injury list is getting disturbing though and the suspension has to be probable at this point, not really any grounds for him to not get suspended based on precedence and grading.
Robertson - Congrats anyone who jumped on, he was really solid and if Neale is out would be even better next week. Role wasn't ideal but it wasn't terrible, half forward type position pushing into the middle at times. Not quite like for like with Berry but not far off it.
Daniher - Rock solid again, just working really hard throughout the contest and moving really well and seems to be finding some real comfort. His ability to keep ticking the score over in the ruck role and without goals is perhaps the most promising sign.
Bailey - Better game from him but still faded badly.
Prior - Wasn't bad, wasn't good. Copped a few knocks and looked sore but with so many guys banged up he should be safe if he pulls up ok.
