I started him too, as I have 3/4 of the past years, every time he’s been available from round 1, but in retrospect he really has never been a good starting pick and is someone to avoid starting in the future.

2018 - started the year with his groin injury, played 3 weeks and then missed 6. Came on strong mid year and then got concussed.

2019 - missed the start of the year, built up form, started to dominate and then got injured again

2020- started slow-ish, missed 1 game early and then built up high level form and got concussed.

2021 - started slow and building up form now

This year might be a little different with a role change but I think there’s enough evidence to suggest it takes his body awhile to acclimatise to the season, in future I’ll be aiming to get him as an early trade in target, rather than getting lured in at the start by his ostensible ceiling and majestic aesthetics
It would have been interesting to see how his much stronger pre-season coming in may have parlayed into early season form if Leon the dumbass wasn't working his "magic" and playing him away from the coalface and out of position as a high half forward for that run of games.

He hasn't at any point looked off the boil or slow out of the blocks, just a bit lost playing a position he never should have been in. I don't see his start this year any different to what happens with Dunkley when Bevo is also working his "magic" and playing him away from his best position.

Yes I too am prone to being lured by players with majestic aesthetics. (I am currently considering trading in Rozee this week, which obviously speaks to this unhealthy habit).

Normally I have J Kelly in the basket with Fyfe, where you start them if they're discounted and don't if they're not. (Fyfe has now moved to the bucket of players old enough to purposefully ignore until they get forward status). But this year I got lured by the fabled perfect preseason and the dearth of other premo options that I liked.

I suspect there's something in what you say about his starts to the year and it might be part of the reason for the way they've played him so far. Who knows. I think I am less inclined to assume stupidity on the part of coaches than some others, and that there is probably stuff going on that we don't know about that motivates strategic decisions we otherwise think are strange, and that they will sort themselves out when the time is right. Though possibly I'm just naive.

Think we all look for different things in players we pick and it's good to play to your strengths. I know I chase ceiling and value. I want players who hurt non-owners. As a result I don't pay as much attention to durability and consistency as I probably should. But as long as you're aware of your blindspots and prejudices and work to hedge against them I think it's okay.

If I didn't have him I couldn't press the trade button hard enough. (Although would probably take Titch first, if I didn't have him either).
Have not looked at Rozee but he is a classic player who possesses artistic appeal. The speed at which he moves and the manner in which he kicks the ball and throws himself at the contest with a slender flame, could make one want to purchase the player in the same way that an art collector want to buy the license to the future works of a relatively unknown, but highly touted artist.

I agree in regards to why Kelly may have been played out of position (although who can know). He seemed to be moving okay but wasn't attacking the ball the way I had seen him to do previously, just seemed out of sorts there for a while. They did move him after a quarter and a half or so to the wing versus the Dogs, which may suggest it was purely tactical, but both explanations are possible. The first few weeks he was given some inside mid time and seemed to do very little when given the opportunity, perhaps pointing to the fact he was being still taking it easy and taking time to trust his body fully. Given his injury history, playing without hurting himself could pose well mental obstacles even when he feels fine.

I also love chasing value and picking players with upside who are injury prone, I take my risks there but don't tend to take the risks with players with role concerns and who have unproven scoring history (outside of obvious breakout candidates). However, supercoach value is not quite the same as it is in gambling, you need to go for a blend of reliablilty, upside and value chasing. In a game like NFLRDT, which you seem to almost be the best at of anyone, pure value seems to reign much more supreme.

Titch is another one to get on right away, I got on him last week with the rationale that his shoulders would likely get better in the 2nd half of the year and he'd tackle more often and win more contested footy. Got a bit lucky that he might have turned a corner earlier than I thought. Still too early to see if he continues to be negatively impacted in the short term, as he certainly could be, and shoulder reconstructions can be troublesome. He still only laid 4 tackles but his contested numbers were way up. Pendles (2015) and Oliver (2019) both came good in the 2nd half of the year after not wanting to tackle early after their operations.

On the Josh Kelly chat, Leon Cameron openly came out and said a few weeks ago that Kelly playing the positions he did (HFF and even pocket for lots of the game) was both a deliberate and known plan by player and coach.

I think there was a line there as well that it was primarily about managing his load through the entire season, to lessen the chance he succumbs to those niggling injuries at some point.

Guess they figured that Josh running laps in open space for most of the game and kicking the winning goal right at the end was preferable to him missing a bunch through being banged up in the centre.
