Quick Thoughts - Saints vs Cats
General - Firstly... god BT is terrible for this sport, doing his best to ruin every game, doesn't know who half the players are, does no research at all, clearly isn't watching any football outside the 2 games a week he's ruining and just talking absolute drivel...
The only thing that might have been worse than BT was the standard of umpiring, they were dreadful. No influence on the outcome but just painful to watch.
The game itself was a tale of two halves, Saints brought manic pressure in the first half and some of the worst goal kicking you'll ever see, 2nd half the pressure dropped way off, especially after the first 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter and the Cats got their chip chip chip goal game going and did a far better job taking their chances and the Saints just didn't have the fuel tickets left to stay in it. Textbook example of a good side not playing to their best but still getting the points.
Saints - Goal kicking... they were bad, 5.17 with another 4 or 5 that failed to score, 4 of those have gone down as rushed but a couple were bad decisions and should have been goals as well, of the 13 misses I'd have said 2 were less than 50/50 chances and maybe 4 were under 90% that an average amateur side would expect to kick. Max King took bad goal kicking to a new level! Outside that the Saints were genuinely pretty good, pressure was fantastic in the first half and should have been about 4 goals up at HT. Second half the pressure did fall away noticeably, not sure if it's fitness or the goal kicking just broke them but it stood out.
Steele - Very generous ratio in the end given he wasn't good and was going well below 1:1 for most of the game. He's playing forward a lot, which I really don't like for him, but he's playing well otherwise until the execution comes out where he's not using it well and making some bad mistakes, feels like he's forcing things a bit. Still looks good value, even his bad games are scraping some good scores.
Crouch - Really strong game, missed about 15 minutes of the game with a concussion test as well so could have been better. Especially because that 15m was the most important part of the game where it was lost and when he got back they were a couple down and scaling chances went out the window.
Billings - Back on the wing and looks good. Only relevant in LOL Fantasy but should be on most teams, looks fit again after his month playing forward pocket, team looks so much better with him.
Ross - Still don't get why he's playing... His ball use is just so bad.
King - I still haven't worked out what he is as a player, does some special things (take that both ways...), tonight he crushed them with awful goal kicking, should have had 5.1 on a bad night. He also had one of the worst quadruple fumbles you'll see under zero pressure after Lonie made the play of the night to put him through on goal to cost the team another goal. Just a mare.
Clark - Ratten must really like his company, it basically took Crouch being off for 15 minutes for him to get above 65% on field, he did a lot in his limited minutes. Just don't get it.
Hill - Another really weird thing, they put him behind the ball 2 weeks ago, he starred, was good again last week, was the best player on the field in the first quarter in that role and then... "Let's move him back to the wing" and he basically didn't do a thing for the rest of the game as his lack of workrate went shining through again, just jogs back and forth on the wing getting out of position, either too close to the stoppage or too far and then never working into space for the ball.
Marshall - Sadly his bad foot flared back up and was subbed out, still almost played more of the game than Clark or Highmore... Only silver lining here is he'll be cheap either later this year or next year but that still sucks.
Highmore - Another whose company Ratten must like because he didn't want him on the field. Made a couple of bad mistakes but was otherwise pretty solid in his minutes. One of those where he did nothing to really demand a game next week but not a lot to make him the obvious one to drop either. Ratten a couple of good comments in the press conference so that's a good sign at least.
Byrnes - The 3rd guy that Ratten must like the company of. Not a great game and he's the pretty obvious scapegoat as the young guy who didn't do much, didn't play much and they lost.
Cats - Outplayed for 2 and a bit quarters but they held up, mostly thanks to awful goal kicking by the Saints but second half they just controlled the game and the ball and the Saints couldn't sustain the pressure and the Cats were pretty clinical when they attacked.
Guthrie - Obviously the CD guy had Steele and was playing Guthre
He was absurdly good tonight, ratio seems brutal. He's a genuine premium, think we need to get past the whole taking a decade to break out thing and accept it. Does it all.
Duncan - Ratio about right, this was a pretty solid Jake Lloyd impression tonight, felt like he marked every kick-in about 15m out tonight, his workrate is exceptional to be in space always but I don't know how he actually got 3 tackles because the Saints did not go anywhere near him at any point tonight, almost like their game plan was to "Let Duncan kick it"...
Smith - He has to be putting up one of the biggest "elite DT/trash SC" seasons of all time this year.
Tuohy - Stealing a lot of kick-ins.
Stewart - Got some really nice scaling on this one, he was pretty ordinary so to steal a 98 is great. He doesn't matter very much but will take it still!
Hawkins - Actually ended up with a poor ratio compared to how he was going and was good in the last quarter so seemed harsh that his ratio fell to pieces in that quarter. Still a nice solid score in a game he was pretty well held in. Did a great job of making sure his touches led to goals.
Atkins - Tuohy back definitely seemed to hurt him this week, the dream might be over on this one.
Selwood - Not sure what happened here, role seemed alright but just couldn't find a lot of the pill.
Cameron - Rollercoaster it will be.
Clark - Barely noticed him all night, was forward from what I could tell. Although if you believed the moron that is BT he had a monster night given that poor Bradley Close does not even exist as a human and is in fact Jordan Clark.
