Watched the Port game, hard to read a lot out of it as it was first team vs second team for the 1st 3 quarters before the 1st team defenders went to first team forwards in the last and definitely had the intensity of a training drill for the most part, the odd part was it sure looked like the 2nd team was told to go easy as they were definitely the less intense team which isn't what you'd expect.

Not many missing at all. From what I could tell just Bergman, Hayes, Fantasia, Dixon and Farrell, I'd say Dixon is the only genuine best 22 there.

Jonas - Solid, playing back in the first team.

SPP - Was actually really good, probably best player on the ground. Was in the 2nd team for the first half before switching to the first team. Much better with the 2nd team where he played pure midfield, more of a standard HF/Mid role for the 1st team and couldn't have nearly the influence. Kind of a bummer he played so well as he's one of the obvious fringe guys that a few of the rookie types could push out.

Burton - Started HB for the 1sts, moved midfield a bit in the 2nd half. Solid.

Marshall - Playing CHF, enjoyed being the more developed player in the contest for the most part and unpressured supply, still very inconsistent in providing the contest and actually impacting it.

Houston - Started wing for the firsts, played just about everywhere (HB, HF, Wing, mid), was pretty nonchalant, definitely knew it was a preseason game.

Motlop - Was another that was annoyingly good as another fringe guy who could hurt the kids' chances. Started in the first team before switching to the magoos for the 3rd and then back to the ones for the last. Standard Motlop basically but the good kind today.

Duursma - Had a mare, one good attack on the ball in the first and then unsighted until the 4th, switched to the 2nds team at HT, definitely holding the door wide open for the kids with that kind of game. I don't know if he got told he's not under threat so don't try but he absolutely should be under threat and everyone he's against was better today. If that's what he's dishing up he's not best 22.

Sinn - Was outstanding. Best aspect was his chasing and tackling, that's the area that young winger types generally are bad at but he was great, 3 genuine holding the ball tackles that stood out. Started on the 2nds team and was solid, went to the ones at HT and really got involved, type of player who is going to be better the better the supporting cast. Played forward in the 4th, anyone who has read my reviews knows that I think the best sign for a young kid is to play in a realistic position in these trial games, they're not going to play rover but if they can do great things in their natural position and also contribute in the position they will have to play that's the best case. He kicked a nice goal and did some good things. Thoroughly outplayed Duursma who seems the obvious spot he could take. A notch below SPP when playing mid but above him otherwise, a notch below Motlop as a forward but better defensively. Did his chances no harm at all!

Gray - Standard role, few midfield rotations, mostly forward, clearly a preseason game.

Boak - Strong midfield role, good indication he's going to hog minutes for another year at least! Looked good for a preseason game.

Finlayson - Really impressive, was the best KP forward for mine on the ground, 2nd ruck for the 1sts.

McKenzie - Started in the 2s, moved to the ones. Was solid.

Amon - Really strong role, midfield and wing, nice balance of both, very prolific. Sinn isn't taking his spot unless he goes full time mid. Definitely could be a sleeper pick but I think a bit too much risk.

Wines - Stock standard.

Clurey - Started in the twos, he played well.

Butters - Started in the midfield for the ones, played mostly midfield with some HF, really nice balance. Was a genuine constant there and played very well. Both shoulders heavily strapped as is pretty normal for him. Definitely firmed as a selection for mine, I don't see for whom or why they'd not keep him where he was.

Georgiades - In the 1st team, did a couple of nice things but mostly invisible.

Rozee - Really invisible, very limited midfield time, did go to half back for the 2nd team in the 4th I believe (different jersey number but sure looked/moved like him). Unimpressive game.

Aliir - Standard for the ones.

Williams - Did some nice things for the 2nd team but nowhere near enough to think he plays early.

Bonner - Firmly in the best 22 back 6 all game. Played solidly.

Drew - Solid game, 2nd midfield group and played well, think Butters offers a lot more though and he's better as the Wines of the 2nd unit with Butters providing explosiveness and skill.

Lycett - Really impressive, still think he's got a 110 season in him if it all came together, Finlayson as 2nd ruck would be kind of ideal. Hard to back though.

Lord - Thought he was the clear 2nd best KPF on the ground, made better for the lack of quality supply and doing it against the best defenders, genuinely impressive looking prospect. If he plays like that consistently I'd think Marshall will want to work a lot harder. Great sign for Port fans either way as Marshall definitely needs a rocket.

Skinner - Was really solid, halved almost all his contests, it was actually Lord in the 4th that was the only one to noticeably beat him. Was in the 2nds team all game though and not playing a fantasy friendly role either but he impressed.

Mayes - Was sneaky good, in the 2s until the 4th, went to the backline of the better midfield side in the 4th, so 2nds still but getting to overlap the guns and was really solid.

DBJ - Solid, defensive role though.

Jones - First team back 6, really solid. Too much sharing down back to consider him but looks good and reckon he averages low 80s if he stays fit.

Burgoyne - Skin and bones but there's a lot to like, probably 2 big training o***easons away physically though.

Schofield - Main midfield of the 2nd team all day, nothing to say he's playing ones any time soon other than that somewhat elevated role for the 2nds.

Visentini - Liked his combativeness, was well beaten but kept trying all day. Good size to him and moves nicely.

McEntee - 2nd team to start, moved to first team for the 2nd half, one to watch, was talked up a lot by commentary as a guy who was right on the fringe. Will play as a small forward though so probably best case is holding Fantasia out and pretty ordinary scoring, although in a strong team could still score well (think Rozee or Farrell in recent times).

Mead - Started in the first team, swapped with McEntee at the half, played the same role. I think Mead is clearly the better midfielder of the pair as his influence actually grew with the 2nd team and a more open role. Definitely has to be in the mix though as was solid up forward also. Same as McEntee though, can't help but feel he'd be starting in Fantasia's spot and would have to hold him out and keep out SPP/Motlop as well.

Looking at them there aren't a lot of spots available right now, would think their best 22 looks something like this:

B - DBJ Clurey/McKenze Jonas
HB - Bonner Aliir Burton
C - Amon Wines Sinn/Duursma
HF - Rozee Dixon Georgiades
F - Gray Marshall Finlayson
R - Lycett Boak Butters

Int - Houston Jones Drew SPP/Motlop/McEntee/Mead/Sinn & Duursma leftover/Bergman

Maybe could be a case for only one of Finlayson/Georgiades depending how they work defensively, but still reckon there are about 7 guys fighting for roughly 2 spots so not a great sign for the JS even if any of the kids win one.

For me Butters the main takeaway, definitely belongs in the forward 100+ mix after that. Lycett looked really good. Wines looks fit. Sinn was the standout kid but needs a big preseason game still to demand a spot, would definitely like to pick him if he earns it though, looks the kind of quality that would hold it to me.

Port might have more mids this season than back flankers

Boak , Drew , Wines
Amon , Butters , Rozee

Burton , Duursma possibly

Houston experiment over ?

Not even counting Gray

Powell-Pepper wants his spot back , where does Mead fit in ?

Aliir , Bonner , Clurey/McKenzie , DBJ , Dixon (when fit) , Finlayson , Georgiadis , Jonas , Lycett , Marshall all playing = 10

Damm ... looking at that Sinn is a worrying case of the dreaded emergency candidate ... if selected at all ...

Bris intra game review courtesy of BF :-

Henry Smith, Rich, Buzza, Hipwood, Michael all in rehab group.

scrappy game, but what do you expect when the defence knows what the offence was trying to do....

Lyons was involved a fair bit, his foot skills faded in the 3rd.

Robbo's 1st quarter was one he'd like to forget, gave up a couple of scoring opportunies to the other team from his field kicks & not manning up after a bad kick. he got better in linking up chains as the match went on.

Rayner looks fit & glides along the ground so well, his evasiness & skills were very good, and starting a chain & then being involved with the chain of movement later was impressive.

Bailey looks very good when he bursts from stoppages, and in general play when he runs & carries.

Fort, was very impressive around the ground & and battled well against Big O. While Big O was just being Big O.

Neale looked pretty sharp when he had ball in hand.

McCluggage is just so classy, reminds me of Pendles with the time he has when he gets the ball, kicked a, beautiful goal on the run while running into the right pocket.

Tunstill & Lohmann showed alot of exciting potential.

Tom Berry pressure was great on the ball carrier.

Was so good to see Darcy Gardiner fit again, had Daniher covered.

Coleman was amazing off half back, so much class & created so many attacks off half back.

I'm a fan of Payne switch to forward & Fullarton to defence.

my final thoughts...
from the 1st quarter the midfield battle was interesting... it was Big O, Neale, Rayner, Bailey & Mathieson vs Fort, Lyons, McCluggage, Robertson McFayden. the 1st group was quick out of the clearances, but the 2nd group used the ball better & dominated the quarter.

The Andrews, Adams & Gardiner domination against Daniher & McStay, really shows Fort will be needed.

Overall scrappy affair & from ground level players were stuffed by end of the third & some players were frustrated with how their teammates do things to put other teammates under more pressure.

Not too much to take away from Tigs intra.

No Dusty or Graham.

Wasn't exactly 1s v 2s, but the black team was a fair bit stronger than the yellow.

Sonsie went well on the black team.

Gibcus looks good but footskills let him down.

Cumberland okay, but was in the yellow team that got a bit of a hiding.

Ralphsmith out preformed his 200k price tag, one to watch in the actual praccy, but price is gross.

Prestia and Baker gonna be good gets for Draft formats.

Still no monopoly on kick outs for Short, split between him and Vlastuin early. Rioli got some late.
