This year’s addition of the trade boost makes life more interesting from my perspective. I’m a fan of trading aggressively before round 3 and salary price adjustments. The extra trade boost means that I can afford to take more calculated risk in terms of my team selections knowing that I can make up to 3 trades at that time. My aim, as always, is to make sure the best rookies are nailed at this time and then sit back for a few weeks (hopefully avoiding injuries and forced trades 🤞🏻) and let the cash cows accumulate their funds before launching into the upgrade/ downgrade cycle.

NORTH Melbourne will spend the next fortnight weighing up whether it can shoehorn all three of its ruckmen into one side, after the impressive Tristan Xerri again staked his claim to feature in the team's season-opening clash with Hawthorn.

Kangaroos coach David Noble described Xerri as being among the "top four or five performers" at the club this summer, having continued his excellent pre-season with a standout display against Sydney in the AAMI Community Series over the weekend.

In the absence of new recruit Callum Coleman-Jones, who missed with minor knee soreness that isn't expected to keep him sidelined for round one, Xerri excelled playing alongside veteran Todd Goldstein.

According to Champion Data, Xerri competed in 52 ruck contests in 109 minutes on the field compared to Goldstein's 41 ruck contests in 100 minutes. He finished with 17 disposals, a game-high 29 hitouts, six tackles and five contested marks.

With Xerri in the ruck against Sydney's duo of Tom Hickey and Hayden McLean, North Melbourne lost the clearance count 15-19. With Goldstein, the Kangaroos lost the clearance count 8-19.
His performance is bound to leave Noble with a selection conundrum just 13 days out from the side's round one clash against the Hawks, as Goldstein, Xerri and Coleman-Jones all vie for the starting ruck role

Ideally will only use two trades that week but it's nice to have the option.

I'd be surprised if the winner doesn't use them aggressively to upgrade through the first 10 rounds personally and that's my intention. Barring late season covid/injury disasters I think that's where the value will be and I think late season covid is less likely than early season, one of the few positives of the Ukraine war is that covid hysteria has officially ended in the rest of the world...

I just can't see the CCJ as a ruckman thing, he got embarrassed by Goldy in the intra-club and even more embarrassed by Gawn last week, he's just not a good ruckman, I'm not convinced he's even an adequate 2nd ruckman at this point. His spot would be as the 2nd tall forward, which is wide open, as would Comben's, but given their lack of KPF it makes absolute sense for them to play Goldy and Xerri in the 3rd tall/2nd ruck spot because they need all the help they can get up forward for Larkey. Noble has been a pretty good coach to date so I'd be surprised if he genuinely went with CCJ in a ruck capacity when he has Xerri, who looked outstanding, and Goldy, who is outstanding.

Was genuinely weird they only played Larkey and Goldy forward this week, they really suffered for the lack of targets as a result.

I reckon with Carlton you have too many talls in defence. Young or OMac won't play - probably Young.

I doubt we take both Pittonet and DeKoning in - one drops out for Silvagni.

To my mind Setterfield was a wing option only due to no Walsh or Doc or even Carroll. If Doc plays, I think Setters out.

Boyd is likely competing with Plowman as a more lockdown defender - will depend on match-ups and I can see that position changing regularly throughout the year.

Durdin will play if fit. Kemp is hugely versatile so a big chance as that last one on the bench.

From your team above, I would have Young, Setterfield and a ruckman out, with Durdin, Silvagni and Kemp in. Boyd will depend on Richmond's forward line make-up.

Scoring off the weekends practise games.

My current team is sitting at

21 / 2239. Macrae (C). Just Rowell to play tonight.

Will be only minor tinkering with my team from here, (hopefully )
Somehow it never occurred to me to do this calculus. Thanks for the awesome idea, just crunched mine too. Very similar at 21/2289 with Stewart not playing tonight so I'll take the ~30 odd that DeKoning scores ;)

Interesting exercise that has reaffirmed my selections to myself

22/2441 Macrae C (could claim cripps C and get a higher score but that wouldn’t be fair)

Don't be fooled by scores, roles are far more important from preseason games and don't let a good score lead to a bad decision.
