47 and 48 frees so far. I compared and this is higher than 8/9 games in Rd 1 last year (Kangas v Port had 56 last year), but not by a lot - most games were low 40's.

I expect players will get used to how umpires are interpreting new rules, and these numbers will drop in time, but as a neutral so far, I've thought the umpires haven't been bad. I would say more of the noticeable ones have been missed frees rather than paid ones.

I'm sure I'll probably change my mind about umpiring on Sunday afternoon though. :p

Carlton have got a "nice" problem now. Will be interesting to see who out of Cripps, Cerra, Hewett & Kennedy loses minutes. They were all so good last night.

Another thing I noticed watching the game live was the way the starting wings operated at centre bounces. I recall a time when wings would rush straight at the contest to create the extra mid. Last night the wings generally did not charge in and actually hung back once the ball was bounced. I guess a lot depends on what your direct opponent is doing but it felt like a definite change of tactic there.

The stand rule has caused sides to roll back into the defence, that is why the wingers hold their position.

All the 6-6-6 rule did was stop Melbourne using funky centre square setups, the 6-6-6 has had less impact on the game than the stand rule.

The stand rule takes the opposition player out of the game, hence the need to roll the wingers back into the defence.

Agree with your comment but I was referring to centre bounces, not general play.
