I will say it's always more pleasurable when people are knowledgeable about the sport and call what is happening, rather than speaking 
because they like the sound of their own voice. I really can't stand the footy commentary overall, agree Hodge and Pearce are two of the more bearable ones.
Horse racing is a good example where they do a good job just calling the action, you could argue that is because each race is much shorter and you need to do that, but at least they call the right names. Cycling is another good example - the commentators there do need to fill a lot of time where not much is happening, sure, but they are very quick at identifying riders whenever anything happens - very difficult to do with nearly 200 riders in a lot of races. At least they don't hype up stuff for no real reason when it's a bit quiet as a lot of footy commentators do too...
