The first DPP changes in KFC SuperCoach BBL history will be added before Round 5 and several popular selections are in contention.
Beau Webster (BAT only) and Akeal Hosein (BWL only) are the two main contenders who have been on the radar of KFC SuperCoaches early in the season.
Webster has taken on a leading bowling role for Melbourne Stars and performed well enough to suggest he can continue to be a key part of the rotation when Marcus Stoinis is fully fit.
Batting No. 3 (after Joe Burns’ injury) and bowling has made Webster one of the top starting picks of BBL12 after opening the tournament at $62k.
Hosein’s price has surged by about $80k from a bargain $105k to open BBL12 and he could be $200k by the time Melbourne Renegades’ Round 5 double rolls around.
But will he be DPP as well?
It would be a huge boost for KFC SuperCoaches and make the West Indian an even more valuable selection.
The first round of new DPPs will be added before Round 5 and the second will be before Round 10.
We assess five of the DPP contenders in KFC SuperCoach BBL below.
NOTE: Players cannot have DPP removed during the season and can only have a maximum of two positions.
AKEAL HOSEIN
THE CASE FOR
Hosein has faced 35 balls in the opening three rounds, considerably more than many players with BAT-BWL status. The West Indian revelation showcased his talents with the willow when he helped launch the Renegades to victory over Brisbane Heat in Geelong with 30 from 19 balls.
THE CASE AGAINST
Is one innings of substance really enough to justify adding BAT status? No doubt it might help convince some KFC SuperCoaches to pay about $185k in Round 4, but it does seem a stretch. His role as a finisher is no doubt profitable for KFC SuperCoach but he probably needs another big innings in Round 4 to have any chance of becoming BAT-BWL.
VERDICT: BAT-BWL status rests on his Round 4 performance.
BEAU WEBSTER
THE CASE FOR
Webster has proven to be one of the best starting picks of BBL12 in KFC SuperCoach, bowling four overs in each of the Stars’ opening two games. He bowled seam against the Thunder in Round 1 and then four overs of off-spin in Round 3, showcasing his versatility. On both occasions he performed strongly, snaring 2-19 against the Thunder and 0-21 against Hobart. Batting in a prominent role and bowling regularly.
THE CASE AGAINST
How often will be bowl once Marcus Stoinis is fully fit after being diagnosed with Covid on the day of the Stars’ Round 1 match? It seems likely Webster and Stoinis would share the sixth-bowler load but there may be games where only one of the other takes on the full four overs depending on game situation and match-ups.
VERDICT: Seems a strong chance but Stoinis’ impact on his bowling will be telling.
JASON SANGHA
THE CASE FOR
The injured Thunder skipper bowled in each of his side’s opening three matches before being sidelined with a broken collarbone.
THE CASE AGAINST
Bowling three overs in three games doesn’t really classify as all-round status.
VERDICT: Unlikely. Let’s just hope he’s back on the park soon.
ROSS WHITELEY
THE CASE FOR
Bowls decent left-arm seamers and appears to be the sixth bowling option in the Heat’s rotation when they need an extra medium pacer.
THE CASE AGAINST
Has only been called on once, bowling one over in the loss to the Renegades in Cairns.
VERDICT: His one over looked good but Brisbane seems to have its preferred five bowlers. Outside chance at best and would likely need to bowl four overs in his next two games.
ASHTON TURNER
THE CASE FOR
The Scorchers have been reluctant to play more than one spinner (Ashton Agar) in their early games and Peter Hatzoglou only got one over against Hobart. This suggests Turner might take on a more prominent bowling role. He bowled in the only game Hatzoglou has featured in so far.
THE CASE AGAINST
More Coverage
One over in two games won’t be enough for DPP. The Scorchers skipper would need to bowl himself more often in rounds 3 and 4 to be a genuine DPP contender.
VERDICT: Long shot at best.
