I know the thread is called 'Midfield Discussion' but there's not much to discuss from that really.

He's just a little tank that keeps pumping all day long.

Showing some inconsistent scoring there, like 104, 178 then 102. To me 103 would be his average. 😁

Okay, so interesting one for me. I really want to start Laird, Oliver, Bont, Macrae and Steele but I'm really struggling to get the structure right with 5 big premiums so at this stage looking at 4 big mids - so my question is who would you fade? At this stage I'm fading Macrae but I have this gut feeling that I'm struggling with when leaving him out. Taking into account risk, reward and VFM including VC/C options - thoughts?

I've had all 5 in at one point also. My feel is that I can only go one of Laird or Oliver. Macrae is one I need to see in the preseason games playing inside mid to pick.

I had the same conundrum (wanted to start Bont and Macrae), decided to leave Bont out, what helped me decide was just going through their scores from last year, Macrae was averaging around 120 or more for a good part of the season but Bont was under or around the 110 mark for most of it.

I love all those options, I just regretfully downgraded Miller to Macrae to allow Ziebell to Cunners.

Dogs, Crows, Demons work well with a gws donut for the opening 9 rounds.

Only fading Steele because of inconsistent track reports and new coach uncertainty.

Macrae and Bont should benefit from Dunkley's departure. Macrae has the longer premium history to boot.

I'm glad others are looking at this problem also, I'm almost 90%locked away with Oliver and Laird. Yes they're expensive but for me they just give you confidence of that C and VC option without too much thought. The other 3 I keep thinking about who will hurt me more not having. Bont is the SC love child and I expect without Dunkley this will be his best SC season to date, he can go big. Macrae has been such a fantasy staple that it's hard to remember a season when I haven't started him, it feels like he had a really poor season last year but when I go back and look through the numbers and remember the times he was just set out to dry by Bev, I can't help but feel he's well undervalue and again could go big early. Steele also is cheap for what we know he can produce but you're right around the somewhat secretive pre-season reporting and new coaching and possible game-style.

Maybe I just answered my own question  - you guys are awesome

I assume you are skipping Hopper to get them in?

So who is rounding out your starting midfield to go with Ashcroft & Phillips?

I'm considering having 5 gun mids in Laird, Oliver, Neale, Bont and MacCrae to start with. I've still be able to have what I consider a possible 6 keepers in (start with 11 keepers) -

Backs - Daicos and Daniel as D1/D2 (to be 5th and 6th come seasons end) with Yeo at D3 who could become a keeper.
Rucks - Nic Nat and Marshall (I like English but to injury prone for my liking. Both these guys are clear number 1 rucks and can go big).
Forwards - Dunkley and Rozee as F1/F2 who possibly could be top 2 forwards come seasons end if both play mainly as mids. Only challengers for F1/F2 other than these 2 that I see are Coniglio/Taranto. (McLean at F3 who could become a keeper at M9/F7).

Remaining mids set up is - Hopper, Callaghan & Ashcroft as 6th - 8th with bench of MacKenzie/Phillips/Baker which all should play from round 1 and make money.

Could be with a punt if a couple of rookies get named round 1. If they do my midfield should hold me in good stead. Good luck with less than 4 weeks until the start of the season.

Not at this stage - I'm not happy R2 but who is and not happy F6 and D6 but the coin in Finn Callaghan and Hopper I'm prepared to strengthen other areas possibly. It'll work if I gain confidence in these players not being subs and potential to score well on field.

Big deal, when you list them all out like that then fine, he's averaged 121.1 over that period, but if you eliminate his best and worst scores he's only averaged 120.7

I must admit I don't see the need for 5 premo mids right now use Hopper,Callaghan,Ashcroft and Phillips for the last 4 spots and spend the cash up forward, will likely get Cam Mackenzie very early who can score some serious points aswell.

Good luck to you too mate, your Daniel pick concerns me a bit, his scoring has been trending towards less points the last few years, he could end up being another one you just wanna get rid of. I have a mate who started him last season and couldn't get rid of him and he frustrated the hell out of him lol. Nicnat is a pretty big risk too I reckon, just his age and injury history, if he does what he did in 2021 you're laughing but look what happened last year.
