Welcome! To fill in the off-season, I enquired about doing a mock draft on this site. There wasn't much interest but Erich voiced his approval, and that set a chain reaction that has now developed into this thread you see now. Over the coming week we will be doing our own phantom or mock draft for the AFL Draft, alternating picks a long the way.

The aim is a fun exercise for both of us, whilst providing interesting insight in to this year's draft crop to the rest of the members here and where they may end up. After many hours of research the aim is also to provide the most authentic simulation of the actual draft itself as possible with rookie selections included and picks based on how many spots each club has.

Hope you all enjoy! :)

We will do one round a day, then stop and do the next one the next day. Once we reach the 4th Round, we will finish off the draft.

Assumptions:
Gold Coast and Brisbane want 40 on senior list
St Kilda has one spot for Membrey in PSD so must pass
Melbourne make 1 more delistments so #40 is live
North delist the bare minimum (4), Essendon two more
Carlton pass on a selection (#79) so they can pick up Tutt in PSD and have picked up ****, so one less pick

1. St Kilda – Christian Petracca

Age: 18
Height: 186cm
Weight: 92kg
Club: Eastern Ranges
Plays like: Dustin Martin
Quick summary: Powerful midfielder/forward

Why: The Saints have already come out and said they’ll take the best available at pick #1 and quite simply, he’s the best player in the draft pool. Petracca has won just about everything this year, including the Larke Medal and Victoria Metro’s MVP, while also taking home an All Australian jumper. Saints fans will be really be excited over his offensive artillery, with his ability to kick goals on the run from outside 50, but that’s only after he’s busted through a pack, accelerated and bulldozed past his opponents to break free and kick important clutch goals. There’s not a player in this draft, or even in recent drafts, that he can be compared to, with one TAC Cup talent manager labelling him a “once in a generation player”.

Pick #2. Melbourne Demons

Patrick McCartin (Victoria Country/Geelong Falcons)
Key Forward
19.10.1996 Height: 194cm Weight: 94kg
Player Similarity: Brendon Fevola

Why: He's the best forward in this draft which is no mean feat since it's a very strong draft for KPPs. He's a bullocking forward who can crash packs, an elite mark from a contest or anywhere, great below his knees and around the ground. He should easily develop into one of the top goalkickers in seasons to come.

3. Melbourne - Angus Brayshaw

Age: 18
Height: 187cm
Weight: 86kg
Club: Sandringham Dragons
Plays like: Sam Mitchell
Quick summary: Dominant midfielder

Why: Melbourne simply need class and leadership. Brayshaw has both in spades. His rare combination of elite inside ability and foot skills coupled with his leadership abilities are something that Paul Roos would be salivating over. Rated among the very best in possessions, tackles, pressure acts, contested possessions and metres gained in the National Championships.

Pick 4. Greater Western Sydney

Peter Wright (Victoria Metro/Calder Cannons)
Key Foward/Ruck
8.9.1996 Height: 203cm Weight: 102kg

Player Similarity: Kurt Tippet
"Two Meter Peter" as he is called is a lanky ruck with a great set shot and kicking ability on goals and good mark, helped no doubt by his size. He's also quite mobile and versatile as shown by his ruck work where he can more than hold his own but he's probably more suited to a forward role eventually.

5. Collingwood - Jayden Laverde

Age: 18
Height: 189cm
Weight: 82kg
Club: Western Jets
Plays like: Marcus Bontempelli
Quick summary: Damaging utility

Why: With the super season of Bontempelli still very fresh in everyone’s mind, Collingwood's midfield being a little small, and their poor foot skills throughout the side, the Pies may be inclined to take a punt on Laverde. One of the most exciting players of the draft with arguably the best highlights reel, Laverde is blessed with traits AFL clubs struggle to find across two or three players, let alone have them all in one. His disposal efficiency ranks among the elite in the AFL, and he’s been known to fly for a few hangers throughout his journey, coupling a distinct x-factor with an already impressive skill set.

Pick 6. Greater Western Sydney

Jake Lever (Victoria Metro/Calder Cannons)
Key Defender
5.3.1996 Height: 193cm Weight: 84kg
Player Similarity: Harry Taylor

Why: There's not a lot that GWS don't need, they have high draft picks everywhere but a key defender is definitely a hole they need fixing. Lever, despite not playing this year, is the perfect fit here. He could have been a contender for the number one such was his impressive under-age season. He's great at shutting down his opponent but is also exceedingly useful as the loose man finding his own ball and providing a rebound option or a defensive marking option. He's also perhaps the best leader in the bunch, exceedingly mature and you can't question his work rate. will fit in well at any team.

7. Greater Western Sydney - Paul Ahern

Age: 18
Height: 181cm
Weight: 77kg
Club: Calder Cannons
Plays like: Luke Dahlhaus
Quick summary: Damaging forward/midfielder

Why: Ahern will give GWS another small midfielder forward option and could work very well in combination with Devon Smith. His vision and awareness through traffic is top-shelf, as are his foot skills. He finds targets short or deep, and importantly can do either off a step. Around the packs, he has clean hands and an uncanny ability to slip out of tackles before taking off from a stoppage. He’s also shown he can stand up in big games, notching 26 disposals and a goal in Calder’s Grand Final loss, which is exactly what GWS need.

Pick 8. Gold Coast

Lachlan Weller (Queensland/Southport)
Outside Midfielder
23.2.1996 Height: 181cm Weight: 74kg
Player Similarity: David Swallow

Why: Tassie/Gold Coast product who didn't spend enough time to be academy eligible. I think Gold Coast will reach slightly to pick him here because he is really too good to pass up. Outside midfielder with a great inside game he's got pace and flair to break free from opponents but he's also able dispose of the ball effectively whether it is by foot or hand and has no problem racking up the possessions. He will run all day chasing the pill, has a great work ethic.

Pick 9. Collingwood
Darcy Moore (Victoria Metro/Oakleigh Chargers)
Key Forward
25.1.1996 Height: 199cm Weight: 93kg
Player Similarity: Jarryd Roughead

Why: Perhaps one of the brightest prospects from the draft and definitely one of the most hyped and talked about, Moore is one of the leading key position players. He is definitely a key forward, with superb mobility to roam all around the ground, which helps with his ability to take a great park mark. Not to ignore his defensive capabilities either, he is quite capable of playing down the other end of the ground, sort of like a reverse-Carlisle. His only knock at the moment is his average kicking which can let him down occasionally.

10. Geelong - Sam Durdin

Age: 18
Height: 197cm
Weight: 87kg
Club: West Adelaide
Plays like: Ben Reid
Player summary: Promising key position player

Why: Enright is 33, Lonergan is pushing 31, Mackie and Rivers are 30 and Harry Taylor is the baby of the Cats backline at 28. They need fresh blood in the key defence department. Durdin is a brilliant reader of the footy and is very capable of taking a crunching pack mark. He is very tough player and what you love in a key position player or any player really. Very clean and effective user of the footy and has great vision. Durdin also moves very well for a player his size and is sound below his knees. Durdin was also named best on ground in the SANFL under-18 grand final with 48 hitouts, 12 disposals, nine marks and seven tackles, meaning he can stand up in the big games.

Pick 11. West Coast

Jarrod Pickett (Western Australia/South Fremantle)
Outside Midfielder
18.8.1996 Height: 177cm Weight: 74kg
Player Similarity: Lewis Jetta

Why?West Coast will be over the moon to get there man here after rumours he could be going as high as Melbourne's picks (which is silly). Pickett is one of the most attractive options in the draft for teams that need speed, speed and more speed. Pickett has that in buckets and the x-factor to match, his trademark to take on players around him be it from winning his own ball or getting it provided to him. He'll add class to any side that takes him though, he just needs to work on his consistency but there's no doubting his match-winning potential.

12. Richmond - Liam Duggan

Age: 17
Height: 183cm
Weight: 75kg
Club: Western Jets
Plays like: Kade Simpson
Player summary: Classy versatile type

Why: I feel as though Richmond would be in the hunt for an inside midfielder here, but if Duggan were to slip through to them that they would have to jump the gun. Duggan offers get-up-and-go from half back, is particularly dangerous around the stoppages, and loves to run and carry with his line-breaking speed. He has also shown he’s dangerous and effective around goal, kicking three final-quarter goals against the Northern Knights earlier in the year in a come-from-behind win. Duggan’s penetrating kick is his primary asset, but his ability to read the ball well in the air, along with both good vision and speed, that suggests his best position will eventually be situated in the midfield with resting stints at half back.

I don't know the contract situations but surely North won't use pick 36 for a rookie upgrade. They would probably get about their 25th highest rated player in the draft with that selection.

Pick 13. Fremantle

Hugh Goddard (Vic Country/Geelong Falcons)
Key Defender
24.8.1996 Height: 196cm Weight: 94kg
Player Similarity: Lachie Henderson

Why: Another of the top key position players in the draft, Goddard like many others is known for his ability to be versatile and play at either end of the ground. He's probably better off trying to be a defender, with improved performances locking down his opponents and well as a decent mark which helps him intercept and run off half back with his athleticism, allowing him to use his booming kick to rebound out of defence. He uses that to good effect when swung forward but has proven to be too inaccurate and inconsistent which is why he's dropped down the order but should still make the grade easily.

(ps. it's so scary how close Erich's selections are to my own, I don't think there's one pick that I wouldn't have selected. He's either a mind reader or I've accidentally given him all my notes too :D)

They are hopeless at delisting players, have to delist at least 4 players to have 3 free spots for the draft. As one is already reserved for upgrading Tippet, that's their third and last, therefore 36. It does seem high but there's no news at all from them and they have an over-flowing list. I just gave up waiting :D

14. Adelaide - Caleb Marchbank

Age: 17
Height: 193cm
Weight: 85kg
Club: Murray Bushrangers
Plays like: Cale Hooker
Player summary: Promising key defender

Why: With the loss of Bock and Phil Davis, retirement of Rutten and the lack of development from the other defensive prospects, Adelaide is crying out for another key position defender to support Talia and Marchbank is a gem. He keeps opposition forwards quiet, whilst also having a big influence on the game himself, something not many key defenders have luck doing. Given his athleticism, Marchbank could really develop into a prototype utility, playing on a wing, half-forward or half-back to fill any need required, but by the same token, he does look most settled in defence.

Pick 15. Gold Coast

Kyle Langford (Victoria Metro/Northern Knights)
Utility
1.12.1996 Height: 190cm Weight: 73kg
Player Similarity: Andrejs Everitt

Why: I've grown to really like Langford's game even though it is really hard to tie him down to a position, or even a role. He's that versatile and at that awkward height where he could be anything from a third tall type or a tall inside midfielder. He's lock-downed forwards down back, he's kicked goals, and provided run and carry through the midfield. He's probably better suited as a winger who can play back or forward as he doesn't find as much of the ball as he can but his tackling is very good and as you'd assume from someone who can play everywhere his tank is very good too. Excited to see what he becomes at AFL level once he fills out his very light frame.
