Interesting article on ESPN on how the Steelers' coaches are looking to improve Fields' accuracy.
In his last year in college he had an impressive stat, line: 225 passes - 158 completions (70.2%) - 22 TDs - 6 Ints.; 81 carries - 383 yds (4.7 av.) - 5 TDs
Yet his accuracy in the NFL has never been the same: 58.9%, 60.4% and 61.4%.
That could be attribued to a number of factors : the higher standard of defence in the NFL and a poor O-line the most likely.
The ESPN article talks about the fact that Fields' natural throwing style was not in accord with an "ideal" throwig style; about how after one year on Chicago the coaches tried to get Fields to alter his throwing style to the "ideal" one; how the Steelers' coaches are encouraging him to revert to his natural style with the aim of improving it.
It reminds me of a time, not that long ago, when cricket pundits were all for coaching kids into an "ideal" style of batting or bowling.
They'd take a kid who had had some success with their natural style and try to mold them into a "better" cricketer.
At times, in the process, they'd ruin the kid: he couldn't adjust but also couldn't go back to what had worked for him before the coaches got their hands on him.
Thankfully, they dont do that so much any more.
Think of how Steve Smith might have gone if he had been coached out of his own rather idiosyncratic style?
