Adam Goodes of Sydney from a SuperCoach point of view appears to be over the hill. However, a relatively cheap Goodes could be good value. However, value is only relevant if Goodes bounces back to his previous SuperCoach gun status.
Name - Adam Goodes
Position - FWD
Price - $479,900
Average - 89.7(16), 108.2 (22), 94.3(22), 113.2(22), 105.6(22)
Draw - GWS, GCS, NTH, GEE, STK, BRL, HAW, FRE, COL, ESS, ADE, BYE, PTA
I think I'm going to cop some flak for this article , but I need this article for another article, but here goes.
Dual Brownlow medallist, Adam Goodes was my absolute lock in 2012 due to his early easy draw, the fact that Goodes was one of my heroes in my 2011 SuperCoach team and more importantly his durability. As fate would have it Goodes was injured in 2012 and missed 6 weeks, which much threw out the durable stigma outside the window. As a result of Goodes' injuries and the fact he played a lot in the forward line, he average dropped its lowest (89.7) ever, since the inception of SuperCoach.
In SuperCoach 2013, Goodes has lost his DPP and now only a forward without the midfield attribute. I don't think this DPP change really matters as Goodes would have been selected as a forward in most SuperCoach teams anyway.
REASONS FOR ADAM GOODES
Goodes is priced at an average of 89.7 per game which is the cheapest he has ever been priced.
Now I'm not sure if Goodes is a value premium or not, as Goodes could simply cheap due to his decline due age. However, we should mentioned that Goodes did very well against quality teams in the finals, namely, 146 (ADE), 101(COL), 113(HAW) in the finals. Whether Goodes is a value pick will only be known later in the year.
The Sydney Swans have GWS and GCS in the first two games in 2013, which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing, as Goodes might take it easy on these weaker teams.. However, I don't think it will do harm and he will probably average at least 100 against them.
When deciding on whether to have Goodes in your team, you may want to compare Goodes($479,900) with Mitch Robinson( $474,700) and Dustin Martin($473,500). Goodes is the proven premium, but on the wrong side of 30 against Martin and Robinson who should have their breakout year, but can fade out.
The real question is was the decline in average, due to age, injury, more time in the forward line or all.
REASONS AGAINST ADAM GOODES
The most obvious reason is Goodes turned 33 on 8 January this year, which are valid reasons for most people to avoid him selecting him.
The other reason is Goodes plays more in the forward line compared to yester-years where he played predominately in the midfield. Unfortunately (from a SuperCoach point of view), Kurt Tippett was banned for the first 11 rounds due to the salary cap scandal, otherwise with Tippett in the team, Goodes may have spend some more time on the ball or around the ground.
Coincidentally, an article titled 'Adam Goodes confident his injure knee will be ready by season opener' was published today, which is a bit of concern that they are even talking about injuries.
In addition, compared Goodes with Martin and Robinson, it may be good to compared Goodes with some of the Rucking Forward. I think notwithstanding Goodes' age, if Tippett was in the team, Goodes would likely be in my team. However, without Tippett, Goodes is a watch for me.
I am pretty sure most people will be 'No' or 'Unlikely' due to Goodes' injury, but his AFL and SuperCoach record is pretty good.
I think if Goodes is selected and he averages 22 games at 100, it's a great return when he is priced at 89.7.
Remember, in SuperCoach 2012, Goodes was priced at 108.2 thus it was a slap in the face when he dropped his average by 18.5, however in SuperCoach 2013, an average of 89.7 would be par (ignoring opportunity costs). I'm an open minded person, but Goodes is probably an Unlikely(4), but I'll leave it at Watch(3) for now.
