We are at that time of the SuperCoach year where Armageddon is just around the corner, namely the multi-bye rounds. Therefore, this week’s trades are very important in the context of the entire year, where an extra few donuts could effectively negate any lead you have generated in the last 9 rounds.
If the SuperCoach Gods are on your side during the multi-bye rounds, then it is possible to make up 300 points per round. On the flipside you may drop 300 points per round if things don’t go your way. Now with luck, fate or misfortunate, you cannot control that, therefore we need to plan our strategy with the view that our strategy is on the basis of ‘all things being equal‘.
Premium, Giles (Stephenson, Redden)
For me the fate of the rucks during the multi-bye rounds are entirely in the hands of the SuperCoach Gods and if Stephenson and/or Redden get named then that’s great, if not, then so be it. Everyone will be in similar situation with the rucks. It’s not worth using a trade to avoid a donut in the rucks as they only cover 2 spots on the field, however the bench for other positions cover 6 or 7 spots on the field and with DPP can cover more spots.
I’m going to ignore the premiums for the purposes of this article and use some of the main rookies that some people may have, which are expected to be traded out during the multi-bye rounds. I presume if you are reading this article that you would have read some of my previous articles and given at least some thought on the multi-bye rounds while picking your initial team and/or when trading. Therefore, I assume you have planned your team to have somewhere in the vicinity of 2 to 5 donuts (ignoring the RUC donuts, if they arise) during the multi-bye rounds. For me, currently I have arranged my SuperCoach team where I can have 2 donuts with the following setup:
BAC – 4xR13, 2xR12, Bugg (Morris, Ellis)
MID – 2xR13, 2xR12, 2xR11 (Horsley, Magner)
FWD – 2xR13, 2xR12, 2xR11, Couch(Saad, A.Hall)
If I trade Magner to Darley using DPP or Ellis to Darley, I am set for the multi-bye rounds. The question is what do I do with the Missing In Action Man, namely one, Tom Couch, a person who has been in my team all year without playing a game. Now, I’m using Couch as an example as he is in my side, but you can use any other player in lieu of Couch, who has not played a game or has played one or two game such as T.Walsh (ouch!), Boumann and Bootsma. Now if I trade in Darley for Magner my team will be:
BAC – Morris, Ellis
MID – Horsley, Couch
FWD – Saad, A.Hall
That means that Couch and 2 of the remaining Rd13 bye players will be traded out before the Rd12 bye for 3 Rd11 bye players. I have to balance between using a trade and avoiding a donut. All of the 6 players have increased in value, except Couch. Couch has not increased in value and will not increase in value during the multi-bye rounds and is at a rockbottom rookie price. If Couch is named for Rd11 and plays well, then I intend to keep Couch and am willing to accept an additional donut for the Rd12 bye, with the expectation that if Couch plays well in Rd11 that he will be named in Rd13.
I am literally saying, while I can have the minimum 2 donuts, I want to have an additional donut (for Couch). You may be asking why is Impromptu looking for more donuts when he can avoid it by using a trade which is planned in his initial trading strategy. The simple reason is because Couch has not increased in value and that saving a trade could be more important than an additional donut. Just note that the purpose of a rookie is to generate cash and therefore, I will deviate from my planned trade strategy and cop an additional zero in Rd12 (even though I can avoid the donut) as Couch has not increased in value.
My team is planned around having 2 donuts, but sometimes it is better to accept an additional donut than use a trade for basically 70 points especially when that player has not increased in value at all. The Couch example can be swapped for other player depending on your circumstances.
Have a think of the 6 players that have been allocated the responsibility to be traded out during the multi-bye rounds! Then, see if any of these players (such as Couch) will not have increased in price by the multi-bye round, and determine if it’s worth keeping them (if they are named) even if it means you receiving an additional donut over what was planned.
If Couch is not named for Rd11 (ie next week) then it makes it easier to get rid of Couch next week. If Couch is named, then it might be handy keeping him as there is no value in trading out Couch who is priced at $94,700 with no price rise, in particular when keeping Couch could give me a handy DPP MID/FWD post multi-bye rounds.
