Nathan Bock of Gold Coast has been a solid SuperCoach defender over the years. With injuries in 2012, a discounted Bock could be of value?

Name - Nathan Bock (GCS)
Position - DEF
Price - $297,400
Average - 61.8(4), 93.8(21), 83.2(13), 99.8(14), 90.3(22)
Draw - STK, SYD, BRL, PORT, GWS, FRE, MEL, RIC, HAW, GEE, NTH, ESS, BYE

I have been holding off writing an article on Nathan Bock until we had a better idea on whether Bock will be available for round 1. This appears to have occurred with the Suns defender Bock backed for AFL opener.

In 2012, Bock played games from round 3 to round 6, with the round 6 game against Fremantle being a sub effected score.

Bock is priced at 55.6 even though he averaged 61.8 in 2012 as he received a 10% discount.

REASONS FOR NATHAN BOCK

Bock is obviously underpriced being at 55.6 when his average over the last 4 years is 93.3. Bock's average does not appear to have changed with this move from Adelaide to Gold Coast.

Bock is also the vice-captain in a young side, so there is no issue of job security.

Bock is priced too low compared to his expected output to ignore. I can see Bock averaging between 85-95, either way there is not much risk picking Bock.

REASONS AGAINST NATHAN BOCK

The only real concern with Bock is that he is injury prone and not durable.

The other concern is obviously whether Bock will play in round 1. It would be interesting what people do, if the Guy McKenna comes out on the eve of the first game and says as a precaution we are holding Bock back until round 2.

Either way, Bock is a lock, so Lock Bock I don't think there will be any surprises with the poll, however we might as well go through the process.

Verdict: LOCKED(1)

EXTRA DISCUSSIONS WITH NATHAN BOCK

Presumably the results of the Bock poll will be mostly Watch(3) to Lock(1) in terms of being initially in our SuperCoch team, but I wonder if anyone will use Bock as a Pinch Hitter and trying to get a top 6 premium defender.

Very convincing Jay. You would think he would av. 85 if reasonably fit, a plus of 30 on his price. If he is playing rd 1 he's in my side in place of Broughton.

Wow!! I shouldn't assume anything.

Looking at the poll (currently of 7 votes), No & unlikely have more than Locked & likely.

Pending his NAB output he is locked in my team.
If he can pick up where he left off before 2011 he will probably sit at D6 nearly the whole season. If he can't, then I can't see us losing cash on him. At the moment it looks 99% likely for me. :)

Hang on a minute. Bock averaged 90s when playing in Defence. Last year he was clearly playing as a key forward for Gold Coast. He played several games in that role and averaged 60.

Last year Bock & McKenna both said Gold Coast needed the forward target, so he was to play the majority of his time up forward; the option of switching back was more of a "only to cover in-game injuries" thing.

Unless you clearly know he'll be back in Defence in 2013, I don't think you can expect much more than an average in the 60s/70s.

How many key forwards do you pick in your SC team from teams at the foot of the ladder?

I read that article to be the same as earlier ones in the Bock playing round 1 remains an "ambitious" target that Bock has set himself and McKenna is publicly supporting him. He only started running again a month ago if reports are right.

Couple of good reasons listed to not pick him here but the 90+ ave over 4 years is hard to ignore i must say..and a little surprising i might add as well.

Will broughton effect blocks scores or vice vurser if Bock is playing in backline, ATM I've got both in my side as well as hartlett. If bock is a lock defender and looks to av in the 85-90's i might drop broughton for duffield or grimes

Too many question marks for mine to lock in or even put as likely. Lets say he did play and averaged 86... so I think to myself his value maybe $430ish K. If I use him as a cash cow I make $130 K it is ok, but I really want atleast $150 K at minimum to be satisfied. If I keep him and he averages 86... well fine, not spectacular but fair enough to be my D6 I guess. That is probably how I see him. The problem is as a keeper he scares me he will miss some games somewhere so the downside seems a problem to convince me to go with him for an 86 ppg averaging defender. I put him down for unlikely but keep an open mind in pre-season games to see if there is enough upside in this to take the punt of having him.

I think most people are playing only 4 premium backs ... and with Bock having an injury cloud most will be worried about locking him in as their 4th defender. There are a few rookie back options with Terlich (m/b), Colquhoun (m/b), Pittard and Vlastuin (m) to all consider as well ...

I think if we had the same structure of last year Bock would be a lock (i.e. one extra back/forward).

Not that many defenders even average 90+ across the league and he is priced for not much more than half that. GOt to be worth consideration although, supposedly, he has not really commenced running yet.

His potential forwardness is the issue for Bock.

As someone who has seen live or on TV all 44 AFL games the Suns have played (yes, some of these were torture but some were sensational - sorry Tiges fans) Bock's status will largely depend on how Sam Day comes along as key forward.

Like the GWS, the Suns have drafted lots of big men options. I think Tom Lynch, Steven May and Charlie Dixon will be locked in as Def, Fwd, and Fwd/Ruck. This is how they finished last year and all performed Ok to good in these roles.

I strongly suspect that if Sam Day makes progress as a tall marking forward then Bock will have to play in defense to balance out the lines.

So Watch for me.
