Hi everyone,

I felt a bit lost this week without have some SC planning to do in my lunch break so I've managed to get this up pretty quickly!

Thanks for all the well wishes as well.

Doing this thread was also a good chance for me to look back on the year - it was a lot of fun (and stress).
I'll try not to bang on too much with this, so forgive me if I do! It seemed like ppl were interested in my initial team and my trades through the year so I'll stick to those for now.

I had to setup a photobucket account to paste the picks so I've dumped a jpg of my team each round here if anyone wants a more detail look.

Hopefully these photo links work!

Team History:

Round 1:

Pretty standard I think for the most part. Got sucked into Karnezis as well as Zorko. Both becoming correction trades eventually.
Biggest move was probably playing Blicavs at R2. I regretted right away but in hindsight perhaps it was ultimately responsible for me having more cash to spend on other lines. I gave Koby Stevens a guersney as well, although he didn't last long!

Picked my mids based on what I thought would be consistent scores. Mundy's 2nd half of 2012 convinced me to give him a go ahead of Fyfe.
I think playing 3 rookies on the field in DEF turned out to be the correct move (many did it of course). No Minson/No Goldstein.

A starting strategy was to try and have my F6 averaging 90 from as early as possible. My FWD line scored me a lot of consistent points through the year.

Trade history:

Corrections:
Rd2 - Immediately got in JJK along with Kommer for Karnezis and Stevens
Rd3 - Kanye and Macaffer out for Dwyer and Jones. These two rookies were in my side for a long time and score some very important points
Rd4 this is when I got Luey in with Crouch. Got rid of Kommer very early as you can see.

By round 5 my team had a solid based. I wasted a few trades getting there though.

It's true that I was never decimated by injuries however I did cop a couple

Thomas traded in Rd 7 out for to Priddis next round
Birchall traded in Rd 12 out for Shaw in round 14
Watson injured rd 16 traded to Joel Selwood (blessing in disguise).
Brett Goodes out in Rd 19 to R Henderson (injured 2 weeks later)
Nic Nat in round 19 to Barlow

Best trades (imo)
Matt Jones as a mid rookie choice (I got a couple of solids scores on the field from him)
Trading Travis Cloke at 575k in rd 7 to SJ
Trading JJK in Rd 11 - he scored well for a few more rounds but not having him in the last third of the season was key
Malceski - bit controversial. He didn't set the world on fire (although I did have him for the 150 against GWS) but it meant I avoided Heppel/Hanley who hurt a lot of coaches late. I went for him because Syd had a soft draw before I got him. I didn't think he'd be rested (other would be 1st). He was in AA form or there abouts and I suppose I thought I would back a POD.
Getting Joel Selwood and not Griffen for Watson

I think if you look through my rounds, i got very good points from rookies on the field in some crucial weeks, during phases where some had already traded them out.

M jones 94 in rd 6
terlich and vlastuin 100's in rd 7 (injuries on the Def bench)
Jones 85 and Viney 104 in rd 7
Jones 90 rd 8 + Vlas and terlcih again (both 100s) + dwyer 123
By this stage many had traded Jones + Dwyer
100 from Blicavs in rd 9 and then 107 in rd 10 - this was the week many traded him

Byes - for the byes I had a spreadsheet and planned my trades in advanced. I tried to make sure i had 20 players at least who would be scoring and basically did as much each week.

Incidentally by rd 18 I had the structure I was going for - injuries forced me to changed strategy from here - but at this stage I had a DEF/Mid link, FWD/Mid link, a FWD/Rck link and also a FWD/DEF link

I was pretty happy at this point until both Nic Nat and B Goodes completely through this out!
I was lucky that I'd kept Terlich, who became a keeper at this point.

In rd 19 i spent my last trades.
I went Henderson for Goodes because I realised I needed to keep a flexible side to cover injuries through the last few weeks. I brought Barlow in for Nic Nat- regrettably as it broke my ruck/fwd swing - but felt he was my best options for points. Under the circumstances I also wanted strong cover in the mids and hoped to use the EMG loop on each line where possible. Multiple Def/Fwd players helped this.

Round 20 and 22 were crucial - in these rounds I got Selwood over Ablett for the C. Round 20 in particular was huge.

My rd 23 moves were pretty standard. I didn't make any crazy calls, preferring to rely on my lead (269 pts going in). I took Joel S for VC at 127 (GAJ and pendles did make me nervous!).
I did make the call of playing Colqhoun over Stakers (small win) and chose to take Franklins 58 over giving B Kennedy a go (probably an easy choice)

Well, not sure how to rap this up so I'll just leave it there. Probably more than enough info for most! Thanks for the interest and again for all the well wishes. It is still a bit hard to believe I got there.

Cheers
John

Great read thanks John. Amazing to see that you had zorko & karnezies in your starting side, plus copped nic nat, franklin & Thomas along the way. Stellar trading and captain selections, plus the inspired selection of wines in your starting line up seem to have been key. Congratulations! Enjoy the 50k!!

Great stuff mate, thanks for doing that. I'll have to have another read through this and compare it a bit to how Jay won in 2011.

I think the amount of thumbs up for this post in on track for a world record for this site; 6 in 15 minutes!

Appreciate your time on this, John!

Thanks. No Barbara Eden out of a bottle. Sound logical play. Avoiding the backline disaster of the last few rounds for a few coaches was a godsend. With no trades left after 19 could have ruined you. Well played, thanks for sharing your year.

Really interesting stuff. Thanks John.

No Birchall when he blitzed early. No Griffen when he blitzed mid-season. No Walker until Round 17.

Started with a 4-premium midfield (and Mundy), compared with previous winners Chewy (1) and Jay (2) - if I remember correctly.

Started with 7 Port players, 6 of which were out by Round 10.

A great 1st round score really helped, with many rookies scoring 100+, even with Viney's 117 not counting on the bench.

Karnezis the only mid-pricer, and got rid of him pronto!

Many thanks John. Shows that even if your starting side has some problems, with smart corrective trading you can still move way up the rankings.

Wow the last 16 rounds in the Top 7; which means 16 rounds of stress :)

Interesting a few Top 500 weekly ranks but no Top 10 weekly ranks; shows consistency over the course of the year.

Great write up mate and fantastic insight. Feels good reading that even the winner got sucked in by Karnezis :p

Just looking at your final team, I would've bet my left nut Griffen and Goldy would've been there..and maybe even Danger/Joey. Did you at any stage feel like they were PODs that could have cost you the title?

I also thought it was an interesting (but correct) move to trade Zorko out as Brisbane's draw started to open up. Was that a straight forward trade for you or did you not read too much into the draw?

Seems the teams that started off with 3 premium 5 rookie backline did very well this year. Was the right way to go about it

Yep, we were definitely spoilt this year with backline rookies, especially from port adelaide.

Ha ha :) I suspected you were hoping for Franklin to cream Malceski in a bump a few weeks earlier!
Cheers GB glad you liked it too
