NAB Challenge SuperCoach Review – Part One
by SC Gold 14 hours ago

Each club has played once in the NAB Challenge and here are some of the important scores and points from the first nine games. When analysing scores, be aware that teams field squads of 26.

Geelong v Collingwood – 12 February

The top SuperCoach scorer in the opening NAB Challenge game at Simonds Stadium was Dayne Beams with 103 points. He finished with 35 disposals and he will be one of the most popular selections this season priced at under $500K. New captain Scott Pendlebury (98) started in the green vest and didn’t come on until into the second quarter. He played 64% game time that still saw him collect 22 disposals and kick a goal.

Jesse White (94) kicked five goals and Taylor Adams (90) had 31 disposals to be among the best in their first game for the ‘Pies after being recruited in the off-season.

With 39 disposals, Mathew Stokes (95) enjoyed spending increased time in the midfield and Corey Enright (86) showed great form off half-back finishing with 25 kicks and 11 handballs.

Hawthorn v Brisbane – 13 February

At over 92% efficiency for his 27 disposals, Luke Breust (132) top scored for the night in a game the Hawks dominated from start to finish. We have a SuperCoach gift this year with Sam Mitchell (118) being named as a DEF/MID. He enjoyed a predominately midfield role in the match.

With their dominance, 10 Hawthorn players cracked the SuperCoach ton. Ben McEvoy (101) may be worth a shot as a ruck and those considering Matthew Suckling (70) as a mid-priced defensive option will be buoyed by his return after 12 months out of the game.

Ryan Lester (99) was the best for the Lions and $123,900 forward Jordan Bourke (78) was next on the list with 16 disposals from 65% game time. FWD/MID Dayne Zorko (70) played through the midfield, but there was an absence of Brisbane stars. James Aish (53) had 12 disposals.

Richmond v Melbourne – 14 February

In their first game under Paul Roos, the Demons recorded their second highest disposal count ever with 446. Jack Trengove (121), James Frawley (120), Tom McDonald (117), Bernie Vince (115), Daniel Cross (113) and Nathan Jones (107) led the way as the top scoring SuperCoach players.

All eyes were on the players who offer value to us coaches this year. Small forward Jay Kennedy-Harris (99) kicked three goals. At just $117,300, we should keep an eye on him for a forward bench spot. $172,600 midfielder Viv Michie (86) had 19 disposals and 10 marks after crossing from Fremantle in the off-season.

Premium midfielder Brett Deledio (122) was the highest scoring player on the ground but we didn’t see huge scores from other popular SuperCoach options in Dustin Martin (64), Trent Cotchin (53) or Brandon Ellis (47). Make sure Anthony Miles (85) is on your watch list as he offers value at $246,000 if he is upgraded from the rookie list.

North Melbourne v Carlton – 15 February

Most coaches were keen to see how father-son recruit Luke McDonald (61) went in his first official hitout with the ‘Roos. He did enough to keep his spot in the thousands of sides that have picked him up for $182,300. Jack Ziebell (149) had a day out collecting 39 disposals and 12 tackles. Nick Dal Santo (106) made a positive debut with 29 touches.

Another player in his first game for his new club, Andrejs Everitt (122), kicked three goals for the Blues whilst racking up 17 disposals at an impressive 94.1% efficiency. David Ellard (118), Mitch Robinson (95) and Jaryd Cachia (93) were others among the best for Carlton.

Adelaide v Port Adelaide – 16 February

After having a good pre-season last year and then not delivering during the season, we should be wary of Matthew Wright’s 159 in this match. Port were very undermanned, but he still had 23 kicks, 13 handballs and kicked two goals. A great performance.

Eddie Betts (118) kicked five goals in his first game in Crows colours but it was draftee Matthew Crouch (95) who went to the top of a lot of watchlists. He’s priced at just $117,300 and if he can get a spot in the best 22, lock him in!

There were quite a few big names out for Port Adelaide and Jared Polec (87) took his opportunity. 20 disposals at 85% efficiency saw him as one of the best for the Power. He will be looking to have another big game next week in order to find a spot in the 22.

Gold Coast v Essendon – 17 February

If you were toying with the prospect of starting without Gary Ablett (159), then go into your team page and get him in… now! Even though it was a practice match, his 31 disposals, supergoal and the ‘winning’ point still saw him notch up a huge SuperCoach score.

As a DEF/MID, David Swallow (89) has to be a consideration due to spending a lot of time running through the midfield. Pre-draftee Jack Martin (48) didn’t set the world on fire, but before writing him off, watch is next game.

David Zaharakis (143) had a massive 43 disposals to be the best of the Bombers with ruckman Patrick Ryder (139) not far behind. Ben Howlett (93) as a FWD/MID may be a unique choice for you forward line. Michael Hurley (94) looked a lot better in defence. He should have a better season than last.

Fremantle v West Coast – 18 February

Former Hawk Xavier Ellis (89) is just $159,100 and he had a great game in his first for the Eagles. With just 48% game time, the midfielder took the most of his opportunity and he is certainly pressing for round one selection after 21 disposals. Luke Shuey (125) and Matt Priddis (120) were the best for the Eagles in their big win.

Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands (91) will be a popular option at $310,700 and he showed no signs of why we shouldn’t pick him this year, getting through the game with 46 hitouts. Nathan Fyfe (113) and Lachie Neale (93) were the top two SuperCoach scorers for the Dockers.

Western Bulldogs v St Kilda – 19 February

In a game that was nearly called off, Tom Liberatore (156) and Matthew Boyd (150) were pretty happy it wasn’t with 28 and 27 disposals respectively. Luke Dahlhaus (124) kicked three goals.

Jack Steven (128) and Leigh Montagna (105) led the way for the Saints and Shane Savage (78) also had a positive showing in his first game since crossing from the Hawks. Eli Templeton (48) kicked a couple of goals and if the rookie listed player is upgraded, he might be worth a bench spot.

One of the main reasons SuperCoaches watched this match was to see who the number one ruck would be. Billy Longer (29) was recruited from the Lions, but Tom Hickey (104) is heads and shoulders ahead of him and he will be the main man this season. At $313,300, he is a smokey SuperCoach option.

GWS Giants v Sydney – 20 February

The star of this game was Tom Mitchell (155). The second year player finished with 34 disposals, six marks, six tackles and two goals. We’re lucky enough to be able to pick Mitchell up as a FWD/MID this season and he offers some value at $464,800 as he could end up as one of the top forwards this season.

Luke Parker (106) is another FWD/MID with upside and he was the next best for Sydney. Rhyce Shaw (93) at $299,400 should be considered as he’s priced well below his potential output. For your ruck bench, Tom Derickx (71) managed 23 hitouts and a goal in the absence of regular ruckman Mike Pyke and may get games as the second ruck. On the watchlist.

Former number one draft pick Lachie Whitfield (125) kicked three goals to go with his 35 disposals from just 67% time on ground to be the best for the Giants. Toby Greene (102) was the next best for GWS with his 30 disposals.

Position Preview: Rucks
by Dunny 8 hours ago

Welcome to the third of my positional previews for Supercoach this year. Today we will look at the Ruck position. There are many strategies that Supercoaches take with this position.

1. Set and Forget – This involves picking two premium / reliable ruckmen that you won’t worry about for the rest of the year.

2. Premo and MidPricers – This is picking one premium and then three rookie/cheap ruckmen and using the cash elsewhere.

3. All Midprice and Rookie - This is doing all cheap ruckmen and basically hoping they go up in price and upgrading to better ruckmen throughout the season.

Personally I believe the first or second options are the way to go. Option 3 is too risky for me. Anyway, on to the players.

Blue Chip

Dean Cox (WCE) is the old man of the Rucks. He has been our go to lock guy of the rucking division for a number of years now and once again is amongst the highest priced ruckman at $578,900. Last year he averaged 107 and in there he had 5 games over 120 and only 4 games below 90. Last year he did have to do most of the ruck duties with Nic Naitanui out for most of the year, with Nic back this year we may see Dean rest forward a bit more… all that can mean is more goals and more points! The Supercoach Analyser in your SC Gold area is predicting that Dean will average 123 across his first three rounds. Seems like set and forget to me! In his game vs Fremantle earlier this week he shouldered the load without Nic playing, he scored 79 points but was subbed out late in the Third quarter, so this tells me he has still got it!

Todd Goldstein (NTH) was a guy that I had all of last year and he didn’t let me down. A 114 average and only 6 scores below 100 was exactly what I wanted from my first ruck position. With no other ready to go ruckman at North he has no competition for the spot and no reason to slow down his scoring. North are a team on the rise and should have been a lot better last year losing a number of very close games. Goldstein was a big part of that. He gets a lot of the ball around the ground (much like Cox). He averaged 5 kicks and nearly 7 handballs to go with three marks a game. In Supercoach Hitouts to Advantage are very valuable and he had a heap of these! He averaged 10.9 per game which is certainly what helped his score. When resting up forward he kicked 5 goals 9 behinds. With Majak Daw being more of a forward than a ruckman, I see not much changing at the Kangaroos this year.

Mid Pricers

Matthew Lobbe (PTA) had a phenomenal finish to the year. His overall average was 86, but over the last 7 games he averaged 105. As the Port team evolved last year, so did Lobbe. He took hold of the number one ruck position at Port and ran with it. Particularly with Jarrad Redden going down again this year and being on the Long Term Injury list to start the season, Lobbe has no competition for the number one spot. If he can continue his progress he will certainly be someone for you to consider and would be a great Point of Difference to your team. He averaged 5.6 kicks and just over 6 handballs last year and had 6.1 hit outs to advantage. However, over that great run he had towards the end of the year he averaged 6 tackles a game. This is huge from a ruckman! Lobbe didn’t play in Port’s first NAB game so watch out for him next week vs Essendon.

Aaron Sandilands (FRE) has had a couple of terrible years with injury. He hasn’t played a full season now since 2010. However, if he can get himself fit he will be a gun once again. At the lowly price of $310,700 you can very safely stash him on your bench and just let him accumulate money if nothing else. He is priced at an average of 64 and if he gets even back to somewhere close to his best, he will eclipse that each and every game! His averages over the previous three years to last year were 114, 111 and 112. At 211cm there isn’t too many that can compete with him body to body and this certainly helps his hit outs to advantage where he hasn’t dropped below 7 in the last 5 years. Against West Coast earlier this week, Aaron played the full game out which was a massive win in itself, amassed 46 hit outs and scored 91 Supercoach points. Unfortunately the hit outs were about all he did (only 3 kicks and 5 handballs with 2 marks). I will have Aaron in my starting squad as long as he is fit and gets through the pre-season and is named for round 1.

Tom Hickey (STK) is poised to take the number one job at the Saints this year with the departure of Ben McEvoy to Hawthorn. In the Saints IntraClub match he was the main man with Longer (his main competition) not figuring much at all. He is definitely worth watching in the pre-season games and I think he will get that number one spot. Priced at $313,300 he could be the surprise packet of the season. He seemed to be the number one guy in their first NAB hit out. He played the majority of the game and did well, but when he was up against Minson he did struggle a little more. However, if he is the first ruck, then he is still worth looking at seriously.

Rookies

To be honest, Rookies in the ruck generally don’t get much game time. All you are looking for is a warm body to put on the bench. However, should one of them be called into action and make you some money well, that is a bonus! Anyway, here are a couple of rookies that you may want to consider.

Toby Nankervis (Syd) is about the only Rookie Ruckman that is in a position where he may get a game, but even then that is a big if! He is behind Mike Pyke who seems to be the number one with Tippett pinch hitting, and this seems more likely now that they have Buddy in the forward line too. However, in terms of pure ruckmen, Toby seems to be the guy that would come in if Mike goes down for any reason. Keep an eye on hime and maybe he can warm your R4 position.

Daniel Currie (Nth) was on our radars last year as he had a great pre-season and we all selected him on our benches…. and then nothing happened! He didn’t play and basically sat there all year not scoring. Well it is now 2014 and to be honest not a great deal has changed, BUT if Todd Goldstein gets an injury, Currie will be the man, so certainly put him on your Supercoach watchlist as someone you can put on the field very cheaply if Goldy goes down.

There you have it, some Ruckmen for your squad. I will be very surprised if I see too many teams that don’t have one or more of these guys in them.

Next week I will finish up my positional preview with a look at the Forward Line. In the meantime have a look at the other articles here on SC Gold and have a play with the great analysis tools. Give me a follow on twitter @pkd73 for all the action as I hear about it in the pre-season and beyond!

Yeah, Hickey is a good smokey i reckon. Since Hamish McIntosh hasn't played yet, at least Hickey has some form to take into the season. Will be interesting if HMac plays against Melbourne next Friday and scores 100+ as well. A lot of people starting Sandilands will want backup on their bench with either HMac or Hickey.

Well.... I always thought anyone who started Currie in 2013 was only ever going to use him as a floating donut, with the possibility of him playing a handful of games later in the season.

Traded Players
by SC Gold 14 hours ago

Sometimes a change is as good as a holiday. These guys are certainly not on a holiday, instead they are hoping that a fresh change to new club will in fact boost their careers or prolong them for another few years. Check out some of the relevant guys who have packed their bags.

The Cheapies

Of the cheap options, Dom Tyson $216,800 – MID (GWS to Melbourne) is a great option despite not setting the world on fire in his first NAB Challenge game. He spent e spentH41% time on ground against the Tigers for minimal output (34pts). He can be better than this. Xavier Ellis $159,100 – MID (Hawthorn to West Coast) started brilliantly with the Eagles in his first NAB Challenge game. He scored 89pts in limited time and was even subbed off. Massive bargain if he can stay fit. On the other hand, Billy Longer $271,100 – RUCK (Brisbane to St Kilda) failed to get much time in his first NAB game with the club opting for Tom Hickey instead. He’s still one to watch but the Saints look locked on playing just one ruckman this year. Watch this space. The last big cheapie I have for you in Sam Docherty $285,000 – DEF (Brisbane to Carlton). If he can make the best 22 at the Blues then look out. He played 13 games with the Lions last year and should be much better in 2014. We haven’t seen him yet in the NAB but he’s one to keep an eye on when we finally do.

Oldies… but Goodies?

At the 32 years old Paul Chapman $464,400 – FWD/MID (Geelong to Essendon) is a great sneaky option from the ‘old school’ selection I have for you. He averaged 117 a few years back and is priced at an average of 95 this year. He’ll be managed but says he’s ready to roll. Heath Shaw $522,600 – DEF (Collingwood to GWS) sits at 28 years of age and will surely average around the 100 mark this year. However, after scoring just 48pts vs Sydney in their recent NAB game, I’m not too sure anymore. His new team mate, Shane Mumford $496,000 – RUCK (Sydney to GWS) should be ok though. With season averages of 92, 91 and 113 in the last 3 years I’m expecting him to kick on again this year. He scored 75pts in his last NAB game from just 79% game time. He’s 30 years old but Nick Dal Santo $525,700 – MID (St Kilda to Kangaroos) should find some fresh legs at the Roos. He dropped below an average of 100 for the first time in 8 years in 2013 and will bounce back to better heights this year.

Although he’s not an oldie, I need to slot him in somewhere. He’s 24 years old and was pick #9 in the 2007 draft. Rucks take time to develop and I’m still bedazzled why the Saints let Ben McEvoy $503,300 – RUCK (St Kilda to Hawthorn) go to the Hawks. He’s a premium ruck who has averaged 101, 104 and 93 over the last 3 years and will be even better with the Hawks.

My Top 5 SuperGold Movers

#1 – Dale Thomas $341,800 – MID (Collingwood to Carlton) Injuries saw Daisy play just 5 games last year and now he’s back with his favourite coach, Mick Malthouse. He has averaged 106 in the past and is priced around an average of 75-80 this year. Big bargain!

#2 – Lance Franklin $487,700 – FWD (Hawthorn to Sydney) In 2012, Buddy averaged 116. He’s priced at an average of just 90 and is one of the biggest ‘must haves’ this year. He’ll love the Swans and may even drift up the wings from time to time.

#3 – Shane Savage $341,600 – MID (Hawthorn to St Kilda) Big smokey this year and had 78% game time against the Bulldogs (78pts) in his NAB match. He was vested on many occasions last year and will thrive at his new club.

#4 – Jared Polec $172,600 – MID (Brisbane to Port) played just 69% game time against the Crows and looked fantastic for his 75pts (20 disposals). Place him firmly on your SC bench. Glue him down!

#5 – Viv Michie $172,600 – MID (Fremantle to Melbourne) was outstanding in his first game of the NAB Challenge for the Demons. He scored 72pts in just over half a game and looks great at his new home. Squirt some glue on him as well.
