That's my understanding. This is what it says in the app:

"BYE ROUND ALERT: This week is a bye round. Your team will score points from your best 18 players (top 18 scores) in rounds 12 to 15, selected in your Starting 22 only, including any required emergencies"
For @Disposable heroes' case (and mine lol), that statement is saying if Marshall or English are DNP, Briggs will count. It's clarifying "selected in your Starting 22 only".

So basically, if Briggs tons up and clearly Marshall and English have played, I don't get Briggs' score.

Correct me if I'm wrong

You are correct. The emergency needs to be able to come on field to count.

Apologies for the silly question. If I captain N.Madden and bench Briggs (with emergency on Briggs) and Brigg’s score ends up being in my top 18, will his score still count? Thanks so much
Yeah, I might've over-analysed what you're asking. You have English R1 (VC) and Briggs R2 with Madden R3. And you wanted to clarify the vice captaincy loop.

T English:
Ruck Contests Attended: 70
Hitouts: 20
Hitouts to Advantage: 9

9/18 to advantage after quarter time (Q1= 0/2)
Often the raw stat sheet at first glance doesn't reflect how the game actually played out, English was nowhere near as bad as most people were making out and post quarter time actually had a very good game when you look at the numbers in detail, 15 touches a goal and 9 hitouts to advantage more than warranted the points.

That's how I would read it. Your emergencies will get on field in the same way that they normally would, and then it works out if that on-field score is part of the 18.
