Anyone keen for some DPP cover for finals / flexibility heading into 2024?

The Darkness is prepared to bear 2023 salary, and to structure terms to accommodate deals that suit both clubs.

Other players may be available on request.

Zach Tuohy (DEF-MID)

  • 5 of last 7 seasons averaging 80+
  • Solid reliability, including 6 seasons straight of 22 games, and only 6 games missed in last 3.5 seasons
  • Taking kick-ins (#2 at Geelong)
  • In 2022, played 21 games @ 91 average (D2-3 standard)

Brandon Ellis (DEF-MID)

  • Strong scoring pedigree: 1x 100+ season, 3x 90s, 5x 80s averages
  • Typically very reliable, only missed 15 games in 11 years from 2012-22
  • Suffered from injury and spent time in the VFL this season
  • Scored 90 on return last round
  • Front-ended contract means that nearly 50% of 3-year cost has already been borne in 2023. Reduces salary to only 400k pa in 2024-25.
  • In 2022, played 21 games @ 92 average (D2 standard)

Darcy Byrne-Jones (DEF-FWD)

  • Very reliable player, missing just 5 games since debuting 8 years ago
  • Rare DEF-FWD swing covers two positions
  • 3 seasons of 80+ averages
  • Salary of just 240k in 2025. Contract provides cover for 3 UL finals series, for an average of just 240k pa (given 2023 salary is also covered)
  • Former All Australian and Port Adelaide best and fairest

Big week looming, ahead of trade deadline

With less than a week to go before the 2023 trade deadline, The Darkness’ list management team is preparing for an active trade period.

The club is said to be prepared to bear 2023 salaries, to allow a number of players to find new homes - whether chasing a flag this year, or offering their services for clubs making a tilt in 2024.

2023 finals plans are expected to be a focal point in discussions, but a number of clubs are already looking to improve their lists for 2024 and beyond.

Off the table
Nick Daicos
Jayden Short
Jai Newcombe
Will Phillips
[Rucks available, but one in, one out]

Gettable
All other players
All draft picks

The Darkness’ team are said to have the whiteboard ready to help navigate other club’s list constraints, and accommodate trade needs via player swaps, draft picks or contract structure.

Score update:

Flanders - scored 97, with Touk back in the team. Averaging over 100 since returning.

DBJ - scored 57. Had 17 touches and 3 scoring shots, but was inaccurate.

Tuohy - scored 54. May have been distracted by the celebrations for breaking Stynes’ record as the most capped Irish player.

Ellis - scored 61 from 17 disposals

Sinclair - scored 96 from 33 disposals (equal most for St Kilda). Added MID eligibility.

Who is keen to acquire a forward?

It’s the shallowest line in Classic this year, so you know it’s going to be even tougher in a keeper league!

Based off last year’s averages:

Timelords have 3 who scored 80+
Rangers have 3 @ 80+
Creme have 0 @ 80+, plus 2 in the 70s
Giants have 1 @ 80+ (plus B Smith ACL), with a 45 at F3
Jets have 1 @ 80+, with a 65 at F2
Immortals have 1 @ 80+, but 4 others in the 70s
Darkness have 3 @ 80+
Stingers have 0 @ 80+, with a 69 at F1
Knights have 0 @ 80+ (assuming Jackson plays ruck), with a 69 at F2
YRA have 1 @ 80+, with a 59 at F2

It is tough going this year … and the free agent pool may not help much. If we all pick up 1 or 2 forwards, someone could be getting the likes of:

Gryan Miers
Joe Daniher
Jeremy Finlayson
Lachie Schultz
Jamie Elliott
Alex Neal-Bullen
Mitch Lewis
Nick Larkey
Jamie Cripps …

I have a few top line options, plus a number of other guys who have gone 80+ before, and am open to trading one or two. Let me know if you have interest.

Coach Darkie is gauging interest in a range of players, and is open to trading some quality players for a suitable deal. Please drop me a PM if you have interest.

James Jordon (FWD-MID)

- FWD eligible
- Mid DPP
- Debuted in 2021, and selected for every match in Melbourne’s premiership
- Improved in second year, playing every game and averaging 75, #4 player in his class by average, #2 by total points
- Finished top 10 in the Rising Star
- Was the sub in 8 of 17 games in 2023
- Changed clubs for more opportunity, as Sydney moved to strengthen their midfield
- Priced at just 410k for a likely premium forward
- Matching rights included

2021 (debut): 22 games @ 66
2022: 22 games @ 75
2023: 17 games @ 49 including 8 sub vests, just 55% TOG

- FWD eligible, but mooted to play connector role between midfield and forward line
- Elite talent - #3 draft pick in his year (selected just before Bontempelli!)
- Only 20 FWD-eligible players across the league averaged 80+ last season - Billings has averaged 80+ 6 times
- 2022 average artificially lowered by injury score of 0 - adjusted average of 84
- Injured and out of favour in 2023 - moved to new club for fresh start
- Front-ended contract reduces salary to 416k pa for 2024 and 2025
- Previous SC averages include 96, 94 and 93 - all would be inside the top 6 forwards league-wide this season

Deven Robertson (FWD-MID)

1708113387799.jpeg

- Elite talent. Won the Larke Medal for the best player in the AFL Under 18 Chamionships, previously won by Christian Petracca and Sam Walsh.

- Captained Western Australia

- Rising Star nominee (2021)

- Mature body - coming into 5th season. Social media popularity surged in 2023 as his jumper was torn playing against the Pies, exposing his rig

- FWD eligible, MID DPP

- Posted 2022 average of 65 including finals, sufficient for a premium Ultimate League forward

- Wore the green sub vest 4 times in 2023, but won his way back into the side and was in Brisbane’s 22 for the Grand Final

- Actively pursued by West Coast for key midfield role this off-season, but elected to stay on at Brisbane - what did the Lions offer role-wise?

- Midfield opportunities opening up. Will Ashcroft (44% centre bounce attendance) is out with an ACL. Neale (87%) has turned 30. How much longer does Jarryd Lyons have (turning 32, 25% CBAs, used as substitute in 8 out of 10 AFL games in 2023 - including the Prelim and Grand Final)?

- 3 year contract, plus matching rights

- Registered 20 tackles in a VFL match last season

- Strong scorer when played in the midfield at VFL level - 2023 Dream Team scores:

122
109
127
107
87
104
135
96
126
Average: 113

Tom Campbell (RUC)

1708115350571.jpeg

- Backup ruck at St Kilda, selected as emergency several times last season, with 2023 Ultimate League premiership ruck Rowan Marshall rumoured to have been carrying an injury

- Marshall is aged 28, but played much of his career alongside Paddy Ryder. Marshall shouldered the load as sole ruck in 2023, but can he back it up?

- Marshall has only played 2 full seasons at AFL level - missed 9 games in 2021

- Only 5 rucks played all 23 games last season - with only c. 4 playing every game in 2022 and c. 2 in 2021

- Campbell scored 91 in his last AFL game despite being in a ruck share

- Salary of just $272k - cheap cover with upside in the hard-to-fill RUC position

- Averaged 95 Dream Team at VFL level in 2023

No photos needed for these guys - you know who they are. You’ve probably owned them in Classic, and their records speak for themselves.

The Darkness has some very high quality players on 2 year contracts. Open to trading 1 or 2 of them, preferably receiving a premo or elite prospect with longer tenure.

Jack Steele (MID)
- Proven elite scorer - has averaged 126 and 123 previously, to be the #2 player in the competition
- 2025 salary of just 300k

Isaac Heeney (FWD)
- One of the best FWD only scorers in the comp - 5 of last 7 years averaging 94+
- Effectively on zero salary (17k) in 2025

Patrick Dangerfield (MID)
- One of the best SuperCoach players of all time
- 8 seasons of 110+, with 2x 130+
- Still capable of very high scoring - from round 3-7, scored 103, 119, 118, 144 and 124
- 411k salary in 2024
- Could he gain FWD status again? Was worth over $1m pa last time that happened 😋

Mitch Duncan (DEF)
- 10 consecutive seasons of scoring 88-110
- Averaged 90 last year, D2 level
- Hasn’t played a round 1 game since 2020, when he averaged 104 - has had a full preseason this year

Sam Docherty (MID)
- 3x top 15 point scorer in the comp
- Averaged 110 in 2022 and 101 last year
- Long-serving captain of The Darkness
- Cheap contract, 442k in 2024 and 2025
- Could regain DEF status, adding to positional value

Dylan Moore (FWD)
- Was in the mix for F1 or F2 in Classic (now expected to miss first month with illness)
- Averaged 95 in 2022 and 91 jn 2023
- Should retain FWD status in 2025

No surprises, but I will be entertaining offers on basically everyone.

Two worth flagging are:

Matt Roberts
- scored a 90 for many of us on the bubble, just before getting injured
- mooted to play half back
- basically bottom price second contract for 5 years

and

Josh Fahey
- basically bottom price second contract for 5 years
- massive accumulator and excellent kick
- posted 133, 163 and 171 DT in the VFL before making his AFL debut).

I intend to give both 5 year contracts, but could trade for the right deal.
