Is anyone considering a 'cash grab' with Matty Cash? I know they play Liverpool but with scores of 31 & 14 in the last 2 games and a score of -5 coming out of his rolling average, he is going to make heaps of, well, cash. He wouldnt even be on my field but im considering trading him in for Ahmedhodzic and ill be left with 1.7M in the bank which will be enough to trade to Trippier before round 6 when Newcastle have a favourable run.

Although it's great to go for cash, and Cash would help, need to not forget that pts are more important.
Anyone who transferred in Mitoma and Estupinan and dumped Bruno, paid a heavy price this week by ignoring fixtures.

Pool are pumped after their win, and although their defence could be decimated (I think they'll appeal VVD successfully), Cash won't score well.
Ahmedhodzic has EVE at home, and a good chance of going big. I don't have him and regret not getting him. I'd be keeping, even starting.

Gusto is another I might let through to the keeper. Missed the 1st big jump, and although the 2nd should be big, Reece might be back after the break, so Gusto will be done. Need to keep a close eye on Reece's injury news.

Having Trippier is nice, but when I'm leaving 13pts on the bench, I have to wonder if I really need him at any cost, or just be patient and get him when I don't have to sell a kidney.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Fair warning, the following will be a reasonably lengthy post.

Just in general, I really enjoy the strategic aspect of fantasy sport because you always have to think about the short term implications of every move you make against the long term. Often short term decisions are based on cash generation and perceived strength of schedule, long term decisions are based on structuring a strong side and sustainable growth - attained/affected by managing trades efficiently.

From my experience playing many different forms of fantasy I think that quite often, most people are too shortsighted. Making cash can be prioritised over long term growth or sustainable scoring. I often notice this recency bias within my own playing. Then again, sometimes focussing mainly on the short term comes off - both points and cash are made - and point scoring is sustained. Too often though, i think there is a tendency to reason away a negative short sighted choice by saying 'at least player/s x &/or y made cash' - the more often you do this, the more often you are likely to fall into the trap.

The fact of this game is that a good score matters more the week after you select a player, not the week before. Obviously analysing scoring history is very significant but it means more when you select a player that can remain in your team for lengthy periods - meaning the best players in the long term.

Personally, im new to following the EPL & soccer in general. While ive absorbed a lot of information recently, i know that my inclination is to make moves based on the short term prospects of said player/s. That lack of knowledge inevitably will appear in the trading options i consider.

That is why i am analysing stats thoroughly but without the depth of knowledge/insight i think i'll make many mistakes - most will be due to recency bias - as i dont know the best long term options. I dont know enough about the game to realise what players are best in the long term, what players will likely 'come good' and what players will be fools gold - or good for a short time but not a long time.

On a whole, i am really enjoying watching the EPL this season. I wouldnt be as interested in it if i wasnt involved in fantasy/DT or this forum but im finding myself really enjoying the game itself. I hope that will continue.

So, i do want to say that i really appreciate everyone on here who is helping out and who is giving their opinions and helping me form more of a curiosity for the game and a stronger love & appreciation for the sport - both in general terms and in fantasy.

I hope that what i lack in knowledge i can make up for in curiosity! I am looking forward to seeing how everyone on here goes as the season progresses. Cheers!

Tonali and Schar are taking some of the set pieces off Trippier. And to my eye, he seems a touch more defensively minded this year so far. I'm keen on him too, but might not be as free a scorer as last year

I pull out a 170, the 4th best score of the week, and you belt me in our H2H. That's savage, bro.
It trumps the time I pulled out a 5th overall score, to lose my H2H to the 3rd overall.
Not playing the EPL myself but I would caution about putting too much stock in H2H in such a high variance game. Last IPL season we had an 18 team league in which the overall winner, @Diabolical , managed 16th place. I don't know how but he just kept managing to hit the rest of us on our good weeks!

Thought my score was poor in RDT, but it almost halved my rank. Shows how good this community is. Up 319 spots to 341st. Trades still very undecided at this point, Pedro probably goes, maybe Torres? Estupinan and Wissa next week if they blank may go.

Up to 1.1m from 3.4m in FPL. Do we know a return date for Shaw? Thinking of holding if it’s only a short stint on the sidelines. Obviously won’t hold if it’s a lengthy injury. Probably down to one of the 4.6m guys (Udogie, Henry, Andersen).

No idea yet re trades this week. Not even sure if the better play is to chase points or cash.
Hadn't caught up when I posted this. Interesting to see the conversations above about cash v points. Also new to this game and amazed at the knowledge of many on here re players and strength of schedule and the willingness to share this knowledge, and the strategic sides of things too, with EPL newbies like myself. Heartened that I'm somewhat thinking along strategic lines in asking the above question but obvious that I've got much more to learn. Thanks to all who have been willing to share their knowledge and congratulations on some incredible scores by many on here over the first few weeks.

What a fantastic post and I concur with pretty much everything you've said. I've watched plenty more matches this season already than I've previously watched in my life which is due to playing DT and learning from the members on this forum.

Current trades:
Out: Torres and Edouard
In: Gusto and Morris

Grabbing Estupinan last round forced an Edouard type over Alvarez has made the F3 spot a tad difficult for cash generation comparative to the rest of my squad. Unlikely that it would have been used for a onfield scoring position anyway, so might take my chances with Morris and his upcoming fixtures of West Ham, Fulham, Wolverhampton and Everton since this allowed Torres to become Gusto, to take advantage of the 27 rolling in his price cycle.

Bar those two, not many players under consideration to be traded but Wissa and Estupinan are likely to be featured in RD5 if they post low scores again, to possibly help fund a midfield upgrade to Maddison/Foden/Fernandes. Will likely consider Trippier post RD5 and hopefully he is under the $10 mil price range.

Without double checking, I am pretty sure I have went with a two promoted/cheap GK setup on the past few occasions and forgone a starting loop. A loop is eventually brought in ideally after a goalie makes it past 5.5 million and helps off-set any poor rookies, although the cash is minimal in comparison to the money making ability of similarly priced players on other lines. This I feel has also led to me using too many trades (maybe 3 or more) on the position over a season to trade the starters, then find a season long premium, to then cover an injury to said premium, etc.

The tough part is that I am considering Haaland as a starter this season and with what could be a nice opening fixture across the first seven rounds (bar Newcastle in RD2), then I don’t mind captaining him straight up on most occasions given the initial outlay. Issue then becomes the high ownership and likely high VC/C percentage which means I wouldn’t be able to take advantage if he blanks early in the round, etc. If that would be the case, then I would prefer to take him on again to start the season but I cannot find a mix I am confident on and thus not game to go ahead with that.
Only Haaland looped in RD1 so far and the only captain in double figures. Areola averaging a lazy ten, has already made $1.6 million, has Luton this round and has yet to register a clean sheet. :ROFLMAO:

I'm mighty tempted to do a bit of a structural alteration now before i lose a good opportunity. Unfortunately that means Foden has to go.

Foden, Walker & J.Pedro > Bowen, Bissouma & Gusto

Im not going to pull the trigger on these until Saturday morning my time when i know if Bowen is starting, id also like some time to consider if i really want to use a boost this early

OK, for those that are itching to get cash by getting Cash, here's some of my research.
One to seriously consider, but will he do this all the time, or just against weak sides?

It seems he was used almost as an OOP last game.

“Matty Cash is versatile and before he played as a winger. He played with us in a back four, sometimes we used him in pre-season more higher as a winger and as a full-back, he scored against Brentford. He helped us a lot today defensively and offensively. He used his moments to remember the moment he played more in Nottingham Forest as a winger and his two goals were good examples for us. We know he can play there and be versatile. In the end, he played at left-back as Lucas Digne had a small problem, and he played as well there.” – Unai Emery, when asked why he played Matty Cash over Leon Bailey

Heat map show him more attacking than Diaby, and explains why he registered 6 shots.

Bowen or JWP?

Bowen gone up $1.5m already, and drops his 16 from the cycle.

JWP a consistent returner of pts for Soton, and seems to be doing the same at WHU. Taking corners, and surely SPGs?
He's lost PK duties, but given he missed 2 and scored 2 last season, it's not a big deal. He has the $10.14m price tag for a reason.
Excellent fitness levels, rarely missing a game. About 2.5 games missed in 4 years.
A set and forget. Not one to consider as captain, but with uncertainty as to who I want as an M5, he could be the one to fit.

Yeah, definitely need to study him closer to make sure not much has changed.
Stats are showing he's still crossing heaps more than anyone else.

Szobo seemed to be taking lots of the corners in the last game vs NEW. Need to monitor TAAs stats also.

Robbo racking up heaps of crosses. He might be the one to bring in before TAA, though they're almost same price now.

Tempted by Pau to Gusto, but could also afford to offload Kabore. Might do that to get a better cash generator into the squad.
I'd monitor Gusto atm. He may not get many minutes when James returns - likely to be after the Int'l break. Pau is still a good hold atm. Villa have a reasonable draw and whilst he may not be so attacking, he will may get some Clean Sheets
