Another first time world tour winner in this race, Laurence Pithie.

Picked the wrong Eritrean, Tesfatsion came a narrow second.

Williams was close to getting back to back wins too.

Bit unlucky, yes, I probably would have made the same choice as you and gone with the defending champ. However in 2023 Currie had a time nearly 2 mins faster in the junior race than Gate did in the senior race over the same course. Always hard to know for sure on limited races together, but Currie looks to be the better time trialist out of the two.

I did see that with Currie. Currie is now the one to beat for sure. I had to go with the experience at the senior level though.

Tom Sexton was a DNF in the road race. The winner was... Aaron Gate. Ouch. I would have given the edge to Corbin Strong in the sprint to the line, but not this time.

As an NZer I am greatly encouraged by Finn Fisher-Black's recent form. I wonder how he would go against Aaron Gate, both TT and road? Guess it would depend on the terrain, but hope we see it in the not too distant future.

3rd in the Alula Tour (beaten in a sprint in the final stage by a fraction of a second for the overall win), won the Muscat Classic in Oman solo ahead of some quality sprinters, then 3rd in the Tour of Oman including a stage win. Not bad form at all. Only 22 too.

I'll provide an update on the initial two events (Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico) next weekend and open selections. Initial startlists seem to have a fairly even split across the top riders as to which event they are participating in, I wouldn't say one event is significantly more stacked than the other, but these are very preliminary lists. Looking forward to how the new rider selection process for this season works - only being able to select one of the top 5 riders among your four selections and entries via PM should lead to more varied picks this year.

Find attached your dashboard for the 2024 comp. They are a bit empty for some people so far, but they'll slowly fill as you enter events. I have entered all relevant results for those who participated in 2023. I'll update these dashboards regularly throughout the season, and hopefully that will be able to include the first achievements in the next update (as previously mentioned, achievements will not be backdated for the 2023 results).

You'll notice the award for correctly tipping a national champion is to add national colour bands on either side. If you achieve these, they will remain on your dashboard for one year, until the next national championship is held. As you can see from my dashboard, you only need to pick the winner of one of the two national championship races to receive these bands. It basically just adds a bit of bling for getting a correct pick.

Race results from 2023 are shown in black, however I'll add gold, silver and bronze colouring to top 3 placings from 2024 onwards. You'll see this in the national championship races that have been held so far.

I've created dashboards for everyone who participated in 2023, as well as for the two people who have expressed an interest in participating in 2024 so far. If anyone else wants to participate as well, you are more than welcome, anyone can join at any stage. I can put these dashboards together quite quickly now that I have a template for any further participants, so it's not a lot of additional work (takes me 2 mins max).

Hopefully this can be a really enjoyable season of racing! Good luck to you all.

You will select four riders, with restrictions on which riders can be selected. Points have changed from 2023. A few days prior to each tour, I will nominate five riders who are among the favourites for the race. You may only select a maximum of ONE out of these five riders among your three selections. Your other selections are unrestricted from anyone else who is competing.
With Paris-Nice looming, I'll probably lean for a 3peat from Vingegaard

very interested about how Remco might go though.

Vingegaard is racing Tirreno-Adriatico which is run at the same time as Paris-Nice. I don't think he has won either of those two races, let alone twice.

Not going to be easy to pick the winner of either with certainty.

I know I said that I would provide an update with the list of favourites for the first two races this weekend and open selections, but I may need to delay that for a day or two. Apologies.

Does anyone have any firm info on if Adam Yates will be riding in Tirreno-Adriatico or not? For those unaware, he crashed a few days ago in the UAE Tour and was ruled out of that race with concussion. I am not entirely certain on concussion rules in cycling, however I don't think there is a fixed number of days you need to miss afterwards. Struggling to find anything, but I don't have X/Instagram etc where it's likely to be revealed first if he will race or not.

There's a definite impact at UAE if he rides or not as to who the team leader will be, and they definitely have some potential strong GC contenders besides Yates. Whether they have to ride in support or can go for the race win themselves will likely change if Yates rides or not. Yates was planned to be on the list of the five favourites, as he can definitely win if fully fit, but may need to change it now.

If I can get some clarity on this I'll open up picks for these first two races. Start lists are still very provisional, lots of spots still to be named, but as these are the first events of the season, I'd like to have entries open for a bit longer than usual.

Thanks.

Event 1: Paris-Nice and Event 2: Tirreno-Adriatico.

Although the season kicked off in January, our competition season kicks off next weekend with two multi day events: Paris-Nice commencing Sunday night and Tirreno-Adriatico on Monday night. Both events will finish the following Sunday.

In each event you will be selecting four riders. Of the four that you select, you may choose a maximum of one rider from each of the lists below (or none if you prefer) who will be among the favourites for these races. Your remaining selections can be anyone else in the field.

Paris-Nice: J Almeida, P Bilbao, R Evenepoel, P Roglic, M Skjelmose
Tirreno-Adriatico: J Ayuso, E Mas, B O'Connor, J Vingegaard, S Yates

It's worth noting that of the four World Tour races so far this year, there have been ZERO favourites win. None of Stephen Williams, Laurence Pithie, Jan Tratnik or Lennert Van Eetvelt had won a race at World Tour level before this year, so there is no guarantee I have selected the winners amongst those named above. I almost guarantee there will be multiple races this year where I do not nominate the winner among the group of favourites.

Entries are to be sent via PM. Any submitted in this topic will not be entered. I will post my selections a bit closer to the start of these races.

I have tagged below people who have previously expressed interest in participating, or who participated last year, however anybody is welcome to join at any time, not just those below.

@Aston @Bonaparte @bunlit @chels @Dravid @Kiewa @Old Big 'Ead @tso @Woosie

Good luck for the new season!

Race startlists for these two races can be found below. They are not yet complete, I'd recommend checking back closer to the start of the race for the official starters, however you can change your selections as often as you wish prior to the race commencing.

In the end I decided with the unknown of Adam Yates starting to not include him as one of the favourites for Tirreno-Adriatico. If he does compete and is fully fit, he'd have to be a reasonable chance of a good finish, but in reality, I don't think many would have selected him from that group anyway. Consider it a bonus now if he does start I guess, as he's fair game to select along with one of the other favourites. :)

Not many selections submitted via PM as yet. Just a reminder that Paris-Nice starts tomorrow night, and Tirreno-Adriatico the night after that.

The current startlist posted above for Paris-Nice is practically complete. Tirreno-Adriatico is less so, but around 1/3 of teams have fully confirmed their team so far. I'm expecting it'll be much more complete after Strade Bianche tonight.

Adam Yates is out of Tirreno-Adriatico, as I thought may be the case. Hopefully his brother Simon rides: Jayco is one of the teams yet to confirm their starting line up. Pello Bilbao is the only other of the 10 favourites I chose not officially confirmed yet across the two races, although I'm confident he'll be racing.

Going to go for a few unconventional selections for these two races myself - they are both fairly open races with a lot of chances for good points. Figured I'd hopefully end up with at least one unique pick per race, but may not (especially seeing as everyone can see who I selected).

Ironhawk selections:
Paris Nice
: R Evenepoel, M Pedersen, I Van Wilder, O Kooij
Tirreno-Adriatico: J Vingegaard, M Hirschi, D Martinez, T Merlier

Good luck.
