SuperCoach AFL 2024: Which players are in line for dual-position status in round 12?
A new group of SuperCoach dual-position players is just around the corner, and one huge name could be on the list. See exclusive stats on all the DPP contenders here.

The next round of SuperCoach position changes is just two rounds away – and there is one player vying for dual-position status who could turn the game on its head.
Christian Petracca played most of last Thursday night’s game against Carlton as a forward – and blitzed the Blues with a career-high five goals.

Playing the same role against West Coast and St Kilda in the next two rounds would take Petracca to the brink of being a MID/FWD – and catapult him to must-have status in SuperCoach.

As a reminder, Petracca averaged 119.5 points a game last season, and his current 110 average would make him the third-best forward behind Isaac Heeney and Sam Flanders.

And Petracca isn’t the only player in contention for a potential DPP addition, joining the 63 players who became DPPs after round 7.

Scroll down to see exclusive time in position stats to round 9 and expert analysis on the key DPP contenders.

DPP CHANGES in 2024
The three DPP changes this year will take place:
  • After round 6, before round 7
  • After round 11, before round 12
  • After round 17, before round 18
NOTE: Positions cannot be removed once added and a player can only have a maximum of two positions. To be eligible for a second position, a player must play 35 per cent or more in a secondary position and feature in 50 per cent of games during the data period.

Christian Petracca MID
Midfield 78% Forward 22%

The big mover of round 9. Petracca shook a hard tag from Carlton’s Matt Kennedy by moving forward and was almost the Demons’ matchwinner with 10 score involvements, including five goals of his own. All eyes are on whether that performance prompts Simon Goodwin to station him more in attack, where Petracca spent 69 per cent of game time against Carlton. He’ll have to play almost exclusively forward for two more weeks to get DPP in round 12, but round 18 is a genuine chance if Petracca’s increased forward time continues.

Harry Sheezel DEF
Defence 73% Midfield 13%Forward 14%

Sheezel is spending less time in defence – with an obvious impact on his SuperCoach output – but the problem for his potential DPP outlook is that his game time is now being split between the backline, midfield and forward line. Even playing as a full-time midfielder for the next two rounds is unlikely to get him to 35 per cent before round 12.

Jack Sinclair DEF
Defence 63% Midfield 37%

Sinclair’s move into the midfield continued on the weekend, although without the same impact as the previous week (scoring 83 SuperCoach points). He is now over the 35 per cent threshold to become a DEF/MID after round 11. Ross Lyon’s team is crying out for more dare and precision going inside 50 and Sinclair can help with both areas, so he seems unlikely to move out of the centre square any time soon. He’s good value at $548k, but his price probably won’t move much either way if you want to wait to grab him in defence or the midfield.

Sam Darcy FWD
Defence 1% Ruck 29% Forward 70%

The big Bulldog went close to DPP after round 6 and is an outside chance of becoming a RUC/FWD in the second round of DPP additions. Darcy had 30 ruck contests to Tim English’s 62 against Richmond and would need at least a 50-50 split in the next three rounds to push toward the 35 per cent ruck threshold.

Lachie Sullivan MID
Midfield 65% Forward 35%

One of the most-popular trade ins this week, Collingwood’s SSP signing sits right on the threshold of becoming a FWD/MID. The problem is he will only have played four games if he stays in the Magpies’ side until round 11, which falls short of the 50 per cent needed to be eligible for DPP.

Steele Sidebottom MID
Defence 9% Midfield 90% Forward 1%

The Magpies veteran has had a role change over the past two rounds, playing off half-back. It has resulted in his best SuperCoach scores of the season (118 against West Coast) but won’t get him to DPP by round 12. He’s one to watch for round 18, though.

Jack Hayes FWD
Ruck 41% Forward 59%

Hayes couldn’t reproduce his round 8 heroics in Launceston and was subbed out with just 20 points against the Hawks. If he stays in the St Kilda team he could become a FWD/RUC, but like Sullivan he won’t be eligible until the round 18 intake.

Marcus Bontempelli MID
Midfield 90% Forward 10%

Bontempelli is a gun midfielder who can go forward and inflict damage on the opposition, but not often enough to become a DPP. Sorry!

Ed Richards DEF
Defence 50% Midfield 41% Forward 9%

With Tom Liberatore out indefinitely, Richards’ CBAs shoot back through the roof against Richmond – attending 93 per cent on Saturday night. In the process he blasted through the 35 per cent DPP threshold and is set to become a DEF/MID. He’s priced at under $500,000 and if he produces another score like his 163 against the Tigers, he’s a player to put on your trade watch list.

Ed Richards had 34 disposals against Richmond. Picture: Sarah Reed/AFL Photos via Getty Images
Jake Rogers MID
Midfield2%Forward98%

Damien Hardwick backed in Rogers at selection after a quiet third game and he responded with a healthy 64 points and a $37k price jump. Playing as a small forward, he’s a lock to pick up DPP, which could provide useful cover over the mid-season byes for his 37,000 owners.

Izak Rankine FWD
Midfield 26% Forward74%

Rankine attended the first centre bounce of the game on Sunday and caused havoc whenever he went back into the centre square over the course of the game, but his overall forward percentage for the season didn’t move. He sits about 10 per cent below what we need for DPP and would need to play as a full-time mid over the next two rounds to get there.

Jason Horne-Francis MID
Midfield 70% Forward 30%

Horne-Francis has barely shifted from a 70-30 split in recent weeks, and has been used at 42-58 per cent of centre bounces in the past five matches. Ollie Wines and Jackson Mead had the biggest increase due to Connor Rozee’s absence. He needs to play predominantly forward in the next two weeks to gain FWD status.

Sam Naismish RUC
Ruck 66% Forward 34%

Was left out of Richmond’s team last round, and an illness to Jordon Sweet forced more than 3000 coaches to trade Naismith out. With Noah Balta in the side it’s hard to find a spot for the former Swan, but with Richmond’s ever growing injury list you would never say never.

Tom De Koning RUC
Ruck 75% Forward 25%

TDK has been trending in the right direction to give SuperCoaches another RUC/FWD to consider, but a finger injury to Marc Pittonet will likely ruin those hopes. Pittonet has had 73-78 per cent CBAs in the past three weeks while De Koning has recorded 27 per cent or less.

Can Bigoa Nyuon (right) get back in the Kangaroos’ best 23? Picture: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images
Bigoa Nyuon FWD
Defence 98% Ruck 2%

Needs to play the next two matches to be eligible for DEF/FWD at round 12, which seems a long shot. Nyuon hasn’t featured since round 7 in North’s senior team.

Toby Pink DEF
Defence 91% Ruck 1%Forward 8%

You can forget about Pink being DEF/FWD before round 12. He needs to play both of the next two games to be eligible and at only 8 per cent forward would need to play exclusively in attack to go close. The DEF/FWD swing with a player such as Alex Sexton would be nice, but it won’t happen until at least round 18.

Jack Petruccelle FWD
Midfield 23% Forward77%

The speedy Eagle was injured against Collingwood on Sunday which all but rules him out of becoming a FWD/MID at round 12 as he’s stuck at 23 per cent MID. His CBAs drop significantly when Harley Reid plays.
The only player i'd consider from this group that may get DPP is Sinclair. The pool is quite shallow of possible new DPP players going into round 12😩

I had a look at his YouTube video last night and it sort of mirrors what I've been planning ie: 20 'premos' heading into the byes and a top line team heading out.

An interesting strategy was his planned move for next week, trading in a round 13 player (Rozee) mainly because he had room for an extra that round but also because he didn't want to bring in a forward premo, firstly because there's not much choice and secondly because they still had a bye coming. He's got a 'full' midfield already and Rozee would be an extra to help cover mids missing in the other rounds, Green for instance in round 12. What he didn't explain however was that to get Rozee he would be trading out Wilson and bringing another rookie on ground which, to me, defeats the purpose as there's no net gain in comparison to upgrading a rookie somewhere else. Sort of can see why he's looking at running out of trades come rounds 17/18

He's building cash for slingshots and a rookie on ground with best 18 isn't as bad as a normal round.

What role is Boak playing? I haven't watched them for a few weeks and his heat map definitely does not look like a forward. Keen for any insights.

Largely wing. Not attending centre bounces but is used in transition on the occasions where we don't play through the middle. Spike games against weaker opposition aside, I don't think he's SC relevant.

MID-SEASON DRAFTEES WHO CAN IMPACT RIGHT AWAY
Jacob Blight (Richmond)

SC average: 100 (Peel Thunder WAFL)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k, DEF

With Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young out for the season with ACL injuries and Dylan Grimes also sidelined, Blight can provide immediate relief to Richmond’s depleted defensive stocks. The ready-made key defender has shone as an interceptor in the WAFL for Peel Thunder, averaging 18 disposals, eight intercept possessions, five spoils, three intercept marks and 100 SuperCoach points per game. The 22-year-old is also a great ball-user, hitting the target with 85 per cent of his kicks this season. A big watch for SuperCoaches.

Jack Hutchinson may get a look-in at West Coast. Picture: Rob Lawson/AFL Photos
Jack Hutchinson (West Coast)

SC average: 62 (Collingwood VFL)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k FWD

Ryan Maric played for West Coast just over a week after being picked in the mid-season draft, and don’t be surprised if Hutchinson gets an early opportunity with the Eagles. The 190 centimetre forward kicked nine goals in his first five VFL games with Collingwood which saw him burst onto the mid-season draft radar. He was held goalless in the last fortnight, but the 22-year-old has high impact per possession, highlighted by a miraculous hanger he took against Coburg.

Saad El-Hawli (Essendon)

SC average: 110 (Northern Bullants VFL)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k, DEF-MID

“We think there’s a chance he might be able to put selection pressure on in the immediate future, but that depends on how well he adapts to our environment as well… We think with the versatility he offers he’ll give Brad (Scott) and the coaching staff some options.” That’s Essendon recruiting manager Rob Forster-Knight on new Bomber El-Hawli. The 23-year-old has impressed in a range of positions for the Northern Bullants and has no trouble finding the footy despite their struggles, averaging 26 disposals, 16 uncontested possessions, seven marks and 110 SuperCoach points this season. It looks like the speedster will give the Bombers selection committee – and SuperCoaches – plenty to think about by year’s end. He even took some kick-ins while stationed at halfback.

Max Hall in action for Box Hill. Picture: Darrian Traynor/AFL Photos
Max Hall (St Kilda)

SC average: 118 (Box Hill VFL)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k FWD-MID

St Kilda is crying out for some spark in its forward half and Hall brings that in spades. Hall has gone to another level for Box Hill this season, boosting his SuperCoach average from 69 last year to 118 in 2024 and averaging 24 disposals, six marks and four tackles. In one of those games he dominated against North Melbourne’s VFL side, posting a 213-point total from 32 disposals, 18 contested possessions, 12 marks and two goals. The 22-year-old will likely spend less time in the midfield for the Saints than he would at Box Hill, but his speed, clean hands and workrate give him the chance to make an impact in the back-half of the year. However, he missed his last match with a back complaint which is set to sideline him for a couple of weeks.

Geordie Payne (North Melbourne)

SC average: 151 (Tasmania Devils)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k MID-FWD

After missing out on the draft last year as a rebounding defender, Payne tore the Talent League to shreds in his five games for the Tasmania Devils as a blistering midfielder-forward. Payne averaged 22 disposals, 13 contested possessions, six tackles, 151 SuperCoach points per game and kicked 12 majors, seeing him taken with the first pick in the mid-season draft. His last three SuperCoach scores: 175, 160 and 224. Payne is a competitor and his all-round athleticism and versatility should work in his favour of earning an early debut with North Melbourne, who is crying out for forward-half dynamism.

Geordie Payne could get an opportunity in the back-half of the season. Picture: Linda Higginson/Solstice Digital
Will McLachlan (Brisbane)

SC average: 122 (Geelong Falcons)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k FWD

A similar case to Ryan Maric last year, McLachlan has the overhead marking and ready-made frame to push for selection sooner rather than later. Lions recruiting manager Stephen Canole said as much, likening McLachlan to high-flyer Lincoln McCarthy, who is ruled out for the season with injury. The Colac product has kicked goals for fun in the Talent League, booting 26 majors in six games, including four hauls of five or more. He won’t be playing against light 18-year-olds in the AFL ranks, but his ability to impact on the air or at ground level inside 50 is a valuable commodity, and the Lions’ injury woes should help his cause.

Ned Long (Collingwood)

SC average: 101 (Collingwood VFL)

Possible SC price/position: $190k MID

Long trained with the Pies over the pre-season and was overlooked, but the 194 centimetre midfielder has got his chance off the back of some strong VFL form. The 21-year-old ranks fifth in the VFL for tackles per game with 9.3, and is also averaging 23.7 disposals, 4.7 clearances and 101 SuperCoach points. Long could prove to be one of the beneficiaries of Collingwood’s injury crisis with his ready-made frame able to be deployed in the midfield or as a pressure forward. Unfortunately for SuperCoaches, the former Hawk managed four senior games last year which will impact his price.

Ned Long might be required at the Pies. Picture: Daniel Pockett/AFL Photos/via Getty Images
Brynn Teakle (North Melbourne)

SC average: 123 (East Fremantle WAFL)

Possible SC price/position: $283,900k RUC

Now a dual mid-season draftee, Teakle was linked to Collingwood and Richmond, but he may be a better chance of getting a game at North Melbourne. The Roos have struggled to find a tall to accompany Nick Larkey, and while Teakle is a ruckman first and foremost, he has had an impact up forward for East Fremantle this season. His pre-season with the Pies has clearly done wonders for the former Port Adelaide player, with the 24-year-old averaging 35 hit-outs, 16 disposals, 123 SuperCoach points and kicking six goals across seven matches. He is probably too expensive for SuperCoaches unless Tristan Xerri goes down.

Luke Beecken (Brisbane)

SC average: 98 (Woodville-West Torrens SANFL)

Possible SC price/position: $102.4k DEF

With Keidean Coleman and Tom Doedee out for the season, Beecken gives the Lions a ready-made rebounding defender should another backman go down. The 184cm playmaker reads the play well, has speed off and has a penetrating kick, averaging 23 disposals, five intercept possessions and 98 SuperCoach points per game in the SANFL this year. He has also taken more than his fair share of kick-ins this year, SuperCoaches.

SC away, I'm kind of hoping he'd get a game.

Coleman is obviously out. McKenna is clearly down on form. Wilmot is doing very well and Zorko has hit a purple patch but I suspect wear and tear might bring him down. Brain had a few games and looked promising but obviously not enough - I'd love to see Beecken get two or three games to see if he can grab a spot, especially since we only have him on a six month contract to begin with.

I was a bit surprised he was picked up so late, he was rumoured as a possible top 5 MSD pick. Think he could be a good player if given a chance.
