It's the inconsistencies that frustrate most supporters, I'm not a conspiratorialist but watching the Tigers v Blues? a few weeks ago made me think otherwise, not just the free kicks but how the stand rule was interpreted for each team. If a Tigers lad had a mark or free then he only had to look sideways for it to be called play on, whereas a Blues player could run around well off the line and not have 'play on' until he was level with the player on the mark and it happened for the whole game, if he moved he was pinged for 50m immediately. Frustrating to the nth degree!
Don't get me started on the whole raft of rules that were brought in at that time to curb the Tigers influence, corruption and manipulation of the system at it's finest, all in the guise of equalisation but under the influence of a die hard ex Geelong player, supporter and now CEO who just happened to trial the new rules with the Cats and no one else. The changing of the 3rd man up rule was designed to specifically curb the influence of the likes of Shaun Grigg. Play on from the goal square without kicking to yourself and the player manning that kick to be 10m back rather than 5m, purely designed to allow the ball to escape D50 easier, the Tigers game plan was built around holding the ball in their attacking 50 and most teams try to do the same now. 666 to eliminate congestion but moreso to stop teams (like the Tigers again) from loading up at the back of the centre square and putting pressure on the post clearance possession leading to 'dirty' inside 50 entries for the opposition, another pillar of the Tigers game plan.
I'm not going to mention the Free kick differential which is -563 (and rising) since 2017 with the next biggest differential being Hawks at -173, the reason I'm not mentioning it is because I don't believe in conspiracy theories.
Yeah but it also killed the Geelong tactic of having Blicavs go into the oppo ruck's kidneys 3rd man up, knees first. That particular rule change hurt Geelong too.
Another ruck rule change centred around former Richmond and Collingwood ruckman 'Stunning' Steve McKee. The league had no problem with ruckmen having a wrestle in the centre bounce in the old days. It was seen as the sort of titanic test of strength that that boring old fart at the start of the Channel 7 telecast would wax poetic about - at least until McKee went to Collingwood and started winning hitouts for us. Then it was "a bad look" and so they added the centre line and umpired him out of the game.
Once upon a time you only needed to win 4 or fewer games in a year and you'd get a priority pick before the first round. Then Collingwood qualified for it in '05 and Paul Roos sooked so hard about it that they changed the rule. Reckon it was only the Galbally's piping up that had the AFL hold off for the year we needed it.
The pies worked out that burst athletes were the way to go and that they responded best to frequent rotations. Dane Swan in particular benefitted from it and the Pies used it extensively in 2010/11. Rule got changed after the media mafia had a good concerted whinge about "not liking the look". That would be the "Richmond mafia" incidentally of Caro, that idiot Ralph from the Hun and others, though Luke Darcy had a go too. The strategic edge the Pies had recruited for was eliminated at the cost of countless soft tissue injuries across the league. "Cheap" would be the response from the mafia.
Leigh Montagna clearly has never gotten over Milne's bounce. Jack Riewoldt makes jokes about hating the Pies before going on to try and sway public opinion on issues and nobody gives a stuff. Gary Lyon has actually made speeches putting down the Pies and then gets up there all fair and reasonable like, while trying to sink us... from a balanced position of course, you understand. Brian Taylor has had an axe to grind with the club since being denied a spot in the 1990 grand final. He barracks for whichever team is losing in order to keep viewers from switching away. Yet still the greater community thinks he has a pro-pies bias on account of how we are always winning from behind. He's part of that Richmond mafia along with Richo and Simple Jack. Meanwhile that pencil necked, balloon headed cretin who goes for Geelong can barely contain his glee whenever we get done. The less said about or by Andy Maher and Tim Lane, the better. Then there's Slobbo, who tries to derail us at the start of every season with some scandal or other that he's cooked up in one of his booze-induced fever dreams.
The hands in the back rule was implemented because James 'Peptides' Hird whined about being Jimmy Clement's prison-wife every time he played him. No more hands in the back at all then, at least until a giant seppo came across with an 11 foot reach and zero balance. Then it's "ok, sure, you're allowed a little shove." Don't worry about any high contact in the marking contest either. Hell, you can even detach a retina or two and we'll just laugh at the goggles he has to wear because of it.
Collingwood professionalised its recruiting team, sports science team and coaching roster. Being as it was run by Eddie, there was a lot of money thrown at things. The league had no problem when it was Carlton doing it in the 90s. That was cutting edge football department spending. Collingwood does it and it's soft cap time.
Minnow teams demand to play their home games against us on the G and make it their big event for the year, maximising revenue. Then they complain about how much we get to play on the G, forcing us to play home games at that concrete footballing abattoir in the docklands.
And no, Essendon. You play at the Docklands because your president at the time the decision was made owned the company that had the cleaning contract. Decision made. Stop trying to move by stealth like some sort of Carlton manoeuvre.
Hey remember about 10 years ago when they were saying they should outlaw taggers from the game. It had nothing to do with Collingwood finally getting one in Brent McCaffer and ok fair enough, fellow supercoachers.... he did ruin Gaz's shoulder and start The Decline. But y'all had no problems with tagging in the 30 years it took the Pies to actually get around to trying one.
Speaking of umpiring our players to a different set of rules once they start taking the same advantage of them that others have for decades:

Listening to the commentators get the protractor out each week for Ginnivan, trying to find a way to blame him for each successive example of workplace bastardry while others continued to receive the protection guaranteed them under the laws of the game was deadset criminal enablement. Had nothing to do with one of the Cray brothers running the umpire department and he sure as hell doesn't have a problem with the Pies either. Was an assistant here and ran off to join the Roos while we were playing finals so fast, he forgot his bike and didn't bother coming back for it. It sure was funny watching his hissy fit when they put the wrong sponsor's banner up behind him at that presser that time. Anyway... I'm sure his fingerprints weren't all over the Jack Ginnivan workplace bullying issue.
Chris Donlan, Leigh Fisher, Brett Rosebury, Matt Stevic, Matthew Nicholls and the list goes on. Yep, that's why our premierships are worth twice as much as everybody else's. Because of that bag of crooks.
We've done pretty well out of father sons. Look out for the regular push to have that "made fairer" for the other clubs that have been around long enough now to enjoy the same benefits if they tried to look after past players as well as we have. Of course, we are, according to traditional Australian classism, a bunch of catholic bogans whose idea of 'protection' is doing it in a bus shelter so is it any wonder we have so many father-sons?
Anyway. Thanks for the rant space, ladies and germs. I'm off to the pub. Go Pies!
