New captain Will Sutherland

"I really enjoy working with Will, his passion and want to win for the club is unquestionable. He's very open to learning and using senior players to help him negotiate his way through his first full season as skipper.

He obviously did a little bit of it last year and a fair bit for Victoria, so looking forward to working with him throughout the tournament and years to come.

"He's tracking well (in his recovery from a side strain).

He has bowled a fair bit in the last week and is due to bowl again (on Tuesday) and then we've got a practice game against the Stars on Thursday.

If he gets through that, he should be on track to bowl in the first game up in Sydney (on December 16)."

My current side. I think ive got most of the players i really want for round 2 already in my side so that will hopefully mean that trading for round 2 is less stressful than it could otherwise be. If Inglis is available ill have to find a way to squeeze him in i think. I think my team is generic but i am going with the anti-POD of Sutherland and im backing Rogers in to take more wickets than big Will. Of course, Sutherland can bat too so its a bit risky going without but im happy with it.

I can actually do a Davies/Kerr to Inglis/Buckingham move too. Davies is really just a placeholder and while i like Kerr's prospects i can probably wait until round 3 before considering him.

won't be in my starting side

working like crazy to get him in my Round 2 side but that price comparison (Short + Stoinis v Overton + Hardie) has got me thinking

does Overton get his bowling workload managed ? (interesting heard him on a interview that the Strikers analyst last season told him they recommended him for his batting capabilities and bowling was a bonus) , Strikers could have 7 bowling options at least

how fit is Hardie and how much bowling does he do ? if agar & Connolly are both right to go then they will have 6-7 options each game as well

any whispers on the Hurricane lineup and who out of Doran/Owen/Wakim gets first crack until Hope arrives ?

any chance owen could open instead of Jewell ?
If the 4 Perth quicks are playing I'd be very confident in saying Hardie doesn't bowl at all

Nice set-up

Just be mindful you may not have a playing WK Round 2 especially if Duckett arrives in time and takes the gloves (Stars play Game 1 of Round 2 fortunately) so you might be trading Clarke + 2 x Renegades out.

Probably would be trying to get Inglis (or Peirson/Philippe) to start just in case.

Not sure how much cash left so which 3 players that buys you for Round 2.

Thanks. I dont have much cash leftover but I might grab Inglis and Buckingham straight off the bat (for Kerr/Davies) and then can potentially hold Clarke if need be.

Kerr will be interesting , some have him Best XI , others don't then everything changes when Hosein arrives

Have you looked at Renshaw for Bat Bench (DGR 3) ?

Hopefully Buckingham plays T20 this afternoon to give us a idea of how he is tracking , probably between him & Doggett for one spot.

Plenty of positivity around Owen playing before Hope arrives , Wildermuth might take Neser's spot.

Few cheapies around.

Monitor the split of overs Round 1 but Im likely to take him on personally.
I’m curious, what’s the benefit in taking him on. When we had all the expensive all-rounders and maxi I get it. But with no maxi, possibly no Webster, possibly no bowling for hardie - where do you find the benefit of not having that 300k tied up?

You’d be able to pick 2 players from the most successful bbl team in history before their double I guess. Could get any 2 of tye, Morris, Dorf or Richo for less than what Matt Short costs.

Given they’re playing the Stars in round 1 at home potentially without two of their better batsmen, it is not the worst idea.

Deeper squad and being able to loop better players has always appealed to me over Short and the bunch of cheapies you have to pick to facilitate him, but more than anything its about expected value for price and I just struggle to see how Short is delivering on it and not getting cheaper when hes 300K with the lineup the Strikers have this year.

Agree with 7/11, Shaunpro1 and Diabolical above, $300,000 for a batsman who might bowl an over or two a game is quite a lot. You could acquire another player, Thornton as an example for around $100,000 leaving you with $200,000 which would allow you to buy four $150,000 players instead of four $100,000 players. If each of those four, theoretically better players than the cheaper options make 5-10 more points each game then that is a lot of points even if Short does get big scores. And your risk has been diversified.

With Maxwell out of the picture. And the Short fade. Can really build a deep squad it feels like. So probably back to a good keeper Inglis (if out a Phillipe type) and looping good players from the bench. Sounds fun

Great responses, and has definitely got me thinking whether I had under thought the idea of fading even if maxi is unavailable.

Playing around with a few iterations I can see it resulting in more score involvements simply due to deeper squad and not needing to trade out stars round 2 to get your ideal scorchers and strikers.

However, the last 2 games last year strikers ran Manenti, Pope and Boyce, and Matt short still bowled 2 and 4 overs respectively. Whilst Allen is an upgrade on Manenti, I wouldn’t be surprised if Short does get enough to be eligible for economy bonus.
