I currently have McKenzie in my side after the Paris/Stek news.

I heard he had been bowling well … but CricInfo says he took 1/107 in a recent Shield game, and otherwise hasn’t played since January.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricketers/hamish-mckenzie-1337527/matches

His second last wicket was actually in 2023.

Is that omitting some good performances elsewhere? Are they in a comp of decent standard?

Edit: no other T20s since the January matches mentioned above.

Quick look on Play Cricket

4 wickets in Toyota Second XI
23 wickets in Grade cricket

Think @Miller is a Steele or @FlatTrackBully follow WA Grade cricket

Had a look again after a two week break. I need to beat my kids this year as they beat me. Not having Short does that. Switched out short for Overton and wonder if I need to leave more cash to bring him back in. Any advice appreciated. 62000 cash. View attachment 81217
A few thoughts to put in the mix:

- Seifert has an extra early double and better job security than Hurst. He’s also quite a good international player. I would look to make that switch.

- Harper has job security and role concerns with Webster being released to play BBL. Keep an eye on that one, and have a think about a backup plan if he’s not named (or named at, say, 7). Consider having Harper as WK E with Doran/Shaw as a donut player if you are comfortable selecting him, given Harper plays before Seifert and others.

- Hosein is a gun but very expensive for someone who is not playing. I have Jhye and am looping him. That would also give you extra cash.

- I don’t think Harvey is expected to play from what I understand. You could try Wildermuth at that price point, he may get Neser’s role for several weeks, in which case he’s an excellent pick. I think he should be way more popular than he is.

- Curran is a good VC. Try a Renegade as C if needed.

- Turner is solid, but you could use your Hosein cash (or bank) to maybe get Connolly in his place. He is DPP, and may bat high as well as bowl, especially with Hardie injured and Agar/Turner being under clouds recently.

- I like the Abbott and Edwards picks. Both cheap for their quality and/or role.

- Kane Richardson is a favourite of mine and has a long record of premium scoring, but Rogers is less likely to be rested. You could use your spare cash to make that switch (or just try to fit in Rogers elsewhere).

With a few tweaks, you should be in a strong position to get a jump on your kids!

Took about 20 minutes to play with this thanks to @mike89 and @Darkie for their earlier input.

Squad is now:

Doran (C loop), Clarke

Webster (V), Curran, Sutherland, JFM, Brown, (Connolly, Bazley)

Dorf, Kane, Stoinis, Zampa, McKenzie, (Jhye, Allen)

Overton

As before, feel free to pick apart.
Looks pretty good to me.

A couple of comments in the posts just above re Kane and McKenzie.

The other thing I noticed is that you have an all rounder or two in your BWL line, which is a bit unusual (a bit like playing an M-F in your mids). I think the reason is you’ve gone heavier on Renegades batsmen. They play at a couple of lower scoring grounds early on, so I think most are skewing towards their bowlers, who are arguably all discounted. Khan is another option from their side, and he could potentially have a great role.

Any scores, highlights or scorecards you can share with us all from last night's game? Thanks
Sorry had a busy day
Was hard to keep track as there was no scoreboard working at the ground, plus I had a talkative 8 yr old with me.
Konstas and Gilkes opened (konstas the better but both went okay)
Bancroft
Davies
J Sangha
They batted most the innings, Green and Sam's came in late.
Don't know much about Adelaide as a fair few had plain shirts. Buckingham was on the field not sure if he bowled as I couldn't see his name on his shirt until the end of the innings.
A striker player did come off and walk around with ice on his hammy but don't know who it was.
Sorry that's about all I know as there was no scoreboard and kids with me.

SC Playbook and Honeyball are both good.

If you’re short on time, browse recent episodes for relevance - eg those relating to round 1 teams, or those with the round 1 double (Stars and Renegades) or locking out first (Stars and Scorchers). You can then listen to other/older episodes if you have time.
ah nice thank you, I’ve already got my honeyball sub which I’ve been using, sc playbook is the one I forgot that was really useful last season. have been extremely time limited this time around, so really trying to cram today and tomorrow.

Nice one. Both should be handy resources for info.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions on picks, plenty of helpful coaches on here, and we are all still figuring it out as new info comes to hand!

Been playing around with the team for the best part of a month. With lots of different combinations. This is the team I'll likely select.

Have Allen as the (E), if he scores big I'll switch Scott and Edwards. Have ultimately decided on selecting 2 Scorchers bowlers, as I feel they could tear through the Stars weak batting order. Also decided to pick an actual WK

Also stocking Thornton for round 2, and will bring in Short round 2.

Thank you! I tried to check MyCricket but it wasn’t working.

@Miller is a Steele @FlatTrackBully do you have a view on him? Or on the standard of those comps, versus the BBL?
McKenzie has easily been the best spinner in grade cricket for the last couple of years other than Rocchiccioli when he’s played.

Takes wickets for fun and bats 4 most weeks, that 40 odd he hit in the practice game wasn’t a fluke.

Standard of grade cricket in WA is pretty good, can’t really compare it to a professional league or interstate grade comps because I have no idea but I have no doubt that he’s capable and wouldn’t look out of place.

2-day games:
66.3 overs, 15 maidens, 18/151, 8.39 average, 2.27 economy rate.
One-day games:
29.4 overs, 3 maidens, 5/86, 17.2 average, 2.9 economy rate.
T20 games:
4 overs 0/26. (the best economy rate in that game from either team)

Across 2-day and one-day games this is the wickets leaderboard. Far and away the best bowler at the moment. Also had easily the best average (11) last year, and the third best average 2 years ago.

I’ve got him in my side right now. A little concerned about what happens when Mir arrives. Mir + Maxwell + McKenzie or just Mir + Maxwell. They play at the SCG and Manuka Oval in round 3 (the Stars second DGR). If he plays he’ll score well I think. Also handy with the stick, bats at 4 in grade cricket. Relatively quiet this year to be honest with only 123 @30.75 in 6 hits there. 22&3 (at 7) in the 1 shield game he played. Did make a quick 40-odd in the Stars v Renegades game the other day. Expect him to be the first bowler to bat.

Think he plays the Hinchliffe role from a couple seasons back. Bat 7/8, bowls 4 when conditions suit, 2 at a minimum. Mir likely to come in for a seamer given Stoinis and Webster provide those extra seam options already. McKenzie as a left arm wrist-spinner provides variation too, so I think they’ll be keen to give him a decent run at it.

How do you think the Stars will structure their batting line-up ?

If Maxi eventually opens and Duckett is 3 or 4

Clarke then Maxwell
Rogers
Webster
Harper (WK) then Duckett
Stoinis
Cartwright

If Curran is @ 7 , Harper will just slide down.

Or if Stoinis goes 4 , Duckett 3 , Webster is 5 (or could he open and Rogers goes to 5)
.

If I was reading between the lines I would have it...

Clarke, Rogers, Harper, Stoinis, Cartwright, Webster, Curran as the top 7

Game two can see Maxy in for Harper. must be serious question marks over Clarkes keeping if they have a WK on standby for game two.

Beau has spent the best part of the last 2 BBLs batting 3 hasn't he?
