CHEAPIE WATCH

1. Sandon Smith HFB/HOK $237,600
Luke Keary is gone and Sam Walker is rehabilitating an ACL injury, meaning Chad Townsend and Sandon Smith are set to start in the halves for the Roosters.

Smith only averaged 24 points in 33 minutes last year after playing 10 of 15 games off bench. He therefore starts just above bottom dollar. But in the five games he started last season, Smith averaged 54.8. That equates to a price rise of over $300,000 if he repeats the effort.

Also dual position which makes him a great option at hooker.

Verdict: Must-have

2 Isaiah Iongi FLB $232,600
Made his NRL debut for the Panthers in 2024 starting at fullback, making 19 runs with five tackle breaks and a try contribution. They are the sort of high-workrate stats we like to see from a fullback. And they were no fluke given Iongi also backed up those numbers in NSW Cup, where he started 59 times – 56 of those at fullback.

In 2024 he started 24 games and averaged 164 metres per game and almost five tackle breaks per game. Stuck behind the all-conquering Dylan Edwards, and perhaps even Daine Laurie and Blaize Talagi, Iongi has moved to the Eels and will likely start at fullback.

Verdict: No doubt an amazing cheapie but the new Flex position means running three gun fullbacks is a genuine option, which would require sacrificing Iongi, as Tom Sangster has done in his team reveal.

3 Josh Schuster 2RF $265,100
Schuster was a SuperCoach stud in 2021 when he averaged 61. That was a long time ago but shows the talent is there. He starts 2025 at close to basement price after some horror seasons on and off the field and is now at Souths under Wayne Bennett – a coaching great noted for bringing out every millimetre of talent.

Verdict: Buy. Has the talent and job security to be a serious cheapie this year. Should be higher than the 15th best player in SuperCoach.

4&5 Billy Smith CTW $317,200 and Robert Toia CTW $198,800
An unlucky rookie and an even unluckier ‘veteran’. Both sat out 2024 due to knee injuries and both are in the running to grab backline spots at the Roosters following the exits of Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i, Joseph Manu and Michael Jennings. Toia ruptured his ACL in 2022, fractured his jaw in June 2023 and then ruptured his ACL in September of 2023.

Toia did get on the field in reserves late in 2024 and scored four tries from six appearances (all at centre). Roosters faithful have been expecting big things from Toia for years now and all he needs is luck. Speaking of luck, Toia’s teammate Billy Smith has had none of it. Smith made his NRL debut in 2019 but has suffered injuries to his elbow, ankle, hamstring and ACL to name a few. Handed a discount of $234,000 on his 2024 starting price, Smith will be very popular if he stays fit.

Verdict: Highly likely one – if not both – are named for round one.

6 Peter Mamouzelos HOK $302,000, 56.65% ownership
Becomes the top hooker at South Sydney following the exit of Damien Cook (Dragons). Set for a significant rise in output after averaging just 36 minutes last year. It’s going to be a very slow burn.

Verdict: Buy for now but let’s hope a better option emerges. That may well be Blake Mozer (see below).

7 Jesse McLean CTW $234,900
Sunia Turuva is off to the Tigers, which leaves a wing spot open at the attacking juggernaut that is four-time premiers the Panthers. McLean was a serious chance of an NRL spot last season before injury struck. That said, McLean’s biggest hurdle may be from his own family in bother Casey, who starred in seven games last year.

Jesse made his NRL debut (at fullback) in round 26 of 2023 and then played another game in 2024 (on the wing) scoring a try against the Dragons in round 13. A little over one year older than his brother, Jesse holds an edge when it comes to experience on the wing having made 22 starts (16 tries) playing on the flank for Penrith in the NSW Cup.

Verdict: Fingers crossed he scores the Penrith wing spot over his brother as the price difference is over $200,000.

8 Jaxon Purdue CTW $257,000
Backline spots are open at the Cowboys following the exits of Valentine Holmes and Kyle Feldt. Four games off the bench last year mean Purdue is underpriced – but he averaged 55 in games over 70 minutes last season. Other contenders for backline spots at the Cowboys include Zac Laybutt ($389,600) and Robert Derby ($214,000).

Verdict: It’s highly likely value options will emerge in the backline at the Cowboys this year. But will it be from round one?

9 Demitric Vaimauga 2RF $232,600
The retirement of Tohu Harris creates some big SuperCoach opportunities at the Warriors. While Dylan Walker and Erin Clark now become serious SuperCoach options, they are out of cheapie range. But ask any of the Warriors’ coaching staff to nominate their most promising rookie and they all simply answer: “Demitric.” He will play plenty of NRL in 2025. Full analysis in our rookies analysis here.

Verdict: Watch pre-season very closely. He’ll be a cheapie at some stage barring injury.

10 Savelio Tamale CTW $232,600
Has been lighting up the lower grades for two seasons now and gets a fresh start at the Raiders. A proven metre eater who busted over eight tackles per game in NSW Cup last year at the Dragons. He’s not yet in our predicted Canberra team for round one 2025 but word is he’s had a strong pre-season.

Verdict: It will happen at some stage in 2025 but may need an injury for round one.

11 Royce Hunt FRF $249,000, 38.65% ownership
Moves from the Sharks to the Tigers. In other words, he goes from a low-minute prop at one of the better sides in the competition to one of the key recruits at the cellar dwellers, who have game time open in the pack following the departures of Stefano Utoikamanu, John Bateman and Isaiah Papali’i. He’s therefore the most popular cheapie prop in SuperCoach. But can Hunt really step up the minutes?

Fellow recruit Terrell May will no doubt attract plenty of game time, while Hunt has never averaged over 29 minutes a season in his entire career. Can Hunt transform from impact bench player to long-minute starter?

Verdict: Cheapie props are SuperCoach poison but he’s the best of the bunch for now.

12 Tom Amone FRF $232,600
While Canterbury’s game plan of playing small middles got them to a commendable sixth spot last season, they bowed out rather meekly in the finals. Amone adds size after spending three seasons with Leigh Leopards in the Super League. The price is good but it will be a slow burn.

Verdict: Repeating that quality cheapie props are hard to come by. Make a decision closer to round one.

13 Blake Mozer HOK $312,000
Dummy-half dynamo Blake Mozer has bolted into contention for Brisbane’s No. 9 jersey as the Broncos fight to retain the Queensland Origin prospect. Mozer has made a cracking first impression on new coach Michael Maguire after blitzing his teammates in the early stages of pre-season training. If he starts, he’ll challenge Peter Mamouzelos as top cheapie at hooker.

Full story here by Travis Meyn

Verdict: Keep an eye on the battle with Billy Walters for the Brisbane hooker spot. Could challenge Mamouzelos.

SuperCoach NRL Pro/Rel leagues:

Hi all, as per an earlier post, I am looking to set up pro/rel leagues for NRL for the 2025 season (and beyond). I am looking to start with three leagues, which I will allocate pending past results in the competition. The exact number of teams in each league and number of teams promoted/relegated will depend on the interest - I will publish this information in mid Feb after interest has been assessed. I will also create a separate thread for these leagues.

Please complete the Google form below by Sunday 16th February if you are interested. At this time, I will distribute league codes to join. It would be great to have structured NRL Supercoach leagues and see what impact we can make on SuperCoach, in the same way this site does with the AFL and BBL.

Form link:
SCS NRL Pro/Rel leagues

Any questions, please ask. Thank you to the leadership group for letting me give this a go.

Wests Tigers’ scare as star recruit Jarome Luai sent for scans on leg injury
As the Wests Tigers attempt to bounce back from three miserable years, an injury scare for their big-name recruit has rocked the club.
James Dampney
January 28, 2025 - 6:41PM

Jarome Luai, the Wests Tigers’ prized recruit, has sent an injury scare through the joint venture club.
With positive energy emanating out of the Tigers’ 2025 pre-season camp following a solid recruiting drive under second-year coach Benji Marshall, the last thing they need is an injury to their new co-captain.

But according to a report from CODE Sports, Luai has been sent for emergency scans on a knee injury.
The playmaker is understood to have suffered the injury last week and the club is yet to release details on the injury.
News.com.au has contacted the Wests Tigers for information on the injury concern.
Marshall took his troops to Moreton Bay north of Brisbane for an intense three-day camp last week, with input from army personnel.

The Tigers have picked up the dreaded wooden spoon in each of the last three years, winning a miserable 14 games in that stretch from a possible 72 matches.
Desperate to arrest that historic slide, the club has brought in Luai on a multimillion-dollar contract to partner exciting teenager Lachlan Galvin in the halves.
Ex-Panther Sunia Turuva, former Roosters prop Terrell May and Samoan international Royce Hunt are among the other names that have joined the club.
The Tigers will be hoping Luai is fit for the club’s opening match of the looming Pre-season Challenge event.
The Tigers open their campaign against the Bulldogs at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on February 16 followed by a chance for the fans to get a glimpse of the new-look side against Parramatta at Leichhardt Oval on February 21.

Luai and Galvin will need as much time as possible to get their halves partnership up and firing, along with the blending in of the other recruits, ahead of the NRL season-opener against Newcastle in Campbelltown on Friday, March 7.

Last week, the Tigers announced Api Koroisau and Luai – former teammates at the Panthers – will be co-captains for the 2025 campaign.
Marshall is clearly relishing his squad for the coming season and has plenty of faith in his leadership duo.
“Api has been a phenomenal leader for this club over the past two years and his respect within the team is second to none,” Marshall said.
“Adding Jarome’s passion and creativity to our leadership structure makes this partnership really exciting.
“Together, they bring a balance of stability and flair that will drive our team forward in 2025.”
The 28-year-old Luai is also thrilled to have earned a leadership position at the club, which is desperate for some good times to return over the year ahead.

Premiers way back in 2005, the Tigers haven’t tasted September action since the 2011 season.
“Being named captain of the Wests Tigers with Api is an honour I don’t take lightly,” Luai said.
“Api has set an incredible standard as a leader and I’m excited to work alongside him again and contribute to building something special here.
“I am grateful to the coaching staff for giving me this opportunity and I want to make my family, the team, our members and sponsors proud.”

Just want to point out that only 55k Coaches currently are signed up with over 30 days to go.... SC normally has 150k Coaches by session start so we should give the missing Coaches till 2 weeks prior to session starting before opening up spots to other coaches... that's just my opinion but you are the Leader so your decision what you do of course I will accept

SC normally has 150k Coaches by session start so we should give the missing Coaches till 2 weeks prior to session starting before opening up spots to other coaches... that's just my opinion but you are the Leader so your decision what you do of course I will accept
We can add more leagues once the above leagues are full. These were just the reinstatement of last year`s leagues. The more the merrier.

I really liked the shout of Butcher on the last thread. The Roosters have been decimated with forward outs this season, I certainly think there is some opportunity there:

TMay 45 mins
JWH 34 mins
Tupouniua 52 mins (minutes inflated due to playing Ctw)
EButcher 29 mins (ACL injury)
BSmith 54 mins (ACL injury)
CWatson 68 mins (will most likely be playing hooker and will no longer be at lock)

Honestly I don't know what Robbo will do, there were times last season I didn't really get what he was doing. He seemed to chop and change his forwards quite frequently.

Butcher 64 mins, Whyte 33mins, Wong 34 mins, Leniu 41 mins plus a host of rookie props I could see all benefiting. I feel a lot of people are hoping someone like Whyte gets the lock position and 60 minutes a game but I think its more likely all these guys see an increase of 10 minutes or so a game.

Now on Butcher specifically I think he has a little value there, he only really had one game (35 mins) where he didn't get minutes last season. Just looking the rest of his games we really need him to be getting 80 minutes if he doesn't I just don't think he's an option. Can he get 80 minutes with this Roosters team?

I think so, we really need him to win that second row position ahead of Radley. If he's in the middle rotation I just don't see him getting 80 minutes and I don't think there is enough upside there. Radley at lock and rotate all of Whyte, Wong, Leniu & Collins through the middle for me makes the most sense to me.

Got 2 team approaches in mind at the moment. One chasing the points/draw, getting in the guns early and not being overly worried about the cash generation and the other one being fairly balanced, poised for a slow start but better cash generation long term. Would appreciate some harsh criticism from you guys.

I think you could be even more aggressive. :p Try and run all of Cleary, Hynes, Turbo, Walsh, Ponga and gun ctws.

Honestly its still too early to tell at the moment. This time last year we all had Egan (who?) in our 2RF. I think you can absolutely run an extra nuff this season, the last two seasons I've had Pele & Fifita and had no problems cash wise.

Running all four of Hunt, Amone, Schuster and Vaimauga is a little scary though. I could see a world where they could all be averaging 15 points a game.

Yep definitely an all in approach, can see Hunt pumping out 25-35s, Amone and Schuster not even being in the 17 of their respective clubs come TLT and Vaimuga being that 15s guy. Yeah I remember Dylan Egan being so hyped last preseason, not sure if he played a game last year though

Don't get down of yourself. It's a small line in fantasy between a front runner and chasing tail.

This especially so for NRL.

Make sure you have the cash cows. And don't be cute with the must haves, which at this stage might mean not having Longi at Fullback & Flex.

Having said that I need to look at Halfback going without Cleary and/or Hynes.

Going aggressive is fine, but IMO you need to make sure your cash generation is still happening (it's a long season). It's always a bit hit and miss this far out from the season but stay flexible and slot the cheapies in as they become available.
