Dustin Martin of Richmond has a lot of potential to be an elite midfielder and a SuperCoach gun, but could SuperCoach 2013 be the year?

Name - Dustin Martin (RIC)
Position - MID/FWD
Price - $473,500
Average - 88.5(20), 98.9(22), 77.9(21)
Draw - CAR, STK, WBD, COL, FRE, GEE, PTA, MEL, ESS, WCE, BYE, ADE, WBD

Dustin Martin would have stung a lot of people in 2012 and many people would have Martin on the 'Never Again List'. Only after 2 years in the AFL had averaged 77.9(21) and 98.9(22) and was categorised as a MID/FWD and thus Martin may have lured many people into their selection.

Unfortunately, priced at the average of 98.9, Martin's scores in 2012 dropped to 88.5. To make things worst is the two games that Martin missed was due to the 'Richmond Team Suspension'.

Now the question is where does Dustin Martin stand as a 2013 SuperCoach prospect?

REASONS FOR DUSTIN MARTIN

Coming into his fourth year, Martin's previous SuperCoach scores have been impressive with averages of 77.8, 98.9 and 88.5 and doesn't appear to have missed any games due to injury. Either way a solid average of 88 in 63 games is quite impressive.

More importantly, in some of Martin's games in 2012, Martin looked like he was heading for a monster score where he would have a great first half say 70, but drop off and finish on 90. I monitored a lot of the Tigers' games for obvious reasons, Chris Newman :(.

I can see an upside to Martin and with the improving Tigers and Martin could be a 'Fourth Year Breakout Player'. Could Martin be the next 'Dayne Beams' and/or 'Patrick Dangerfield'?

REASONS AGAINST DUSTIN MARTIN

There is a few sayings that are appropriate for 2012 Martin owners: 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy' and 'Fool Me Once, Shame on You, Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me', which are good reasons against selecting Dustin Martin.

Like Martin's young life, his SuperCoach scores appears to be a rollercoaster with six 100s but also four 60s, two 80s, one 19 and 44. Looking at the eight below 80s, there is a strong argument to go for other midfield/forwards, forwards or ruck/forwards especially when there is only 6 forward positions. Say you have one or two ruck/forward with 'Buddy Franklin, Rockliff, 'Dale Thomas' etc, there may not be enough room with the risky project of Martin.

However, I just feel that Martin could have a break out year, especially when you look at his potential by some of his first halves. For me, it's between Watch and Likely, but Watch for now. For 2012 Martin owners, perhaps it's time to forgive.

Verdict: WATCH(3)

I like the fact that Willo has been given Martin as a special project. He will have him fit, hungry and on track. Plenty of upside, and still young enough to say "Ok, he was a little young and stupid, but he's got his head on straight now." Close to a lock, but not quite.

I'm not forgiving him...lol.. if he scores big.. as he is very capable of doing , so be it, but he won't be in my team.. I want a player I can trust is not going to do something stupid.. he is very capable of the stupid and I'd rather not ride his journey. Good luck to him and those that go on the ride. I'll be going with other high scorers. There are plenty on offer. I'd rather be on the Rockliff ride for my forward/mid funds

Watch list for me, but so are most players at this stage :)

If I could guarantee he'd get his attitude to proper training, recovery etc right, I'd pick him. Can someone give him the (round 5-6, 2007) Ablett-esque kick up the butt? :p

I pretty much have locked Dustin Martin into my round 1 side baring injury or dare I say it club imposed suspension.
I believe he has so much upside and if he can improve his tank should run out games much better and not get to 80 points at half time and only finish with 90 which happened many times in 2013 as Jay points out. Could be the Beams/Dangerfield of 2013 I reckon.

There is no doubt he has talent, its just his attitude that is the issue for mine.
Richmond should improve and Martin as well, but stupid is as stupid does and he seems to fit that catagory, maybe look as an upgrade unless his pre-season dictates otherwise.

Martin can go bang and get huge scores. I see alot of 80's and 90's then get 140's and 150's. I will bee jumping on the roller coaster just for the pure joy i get from watching him play. Can play and if he chooses to pull his finger out watch out AFL.

His 19 in the grand final last year has put him on the NEVER EVER AGAIN list. Will not be starting and unlikely to upgrade to him after his abysmal performance last year.

When your 22 coming to the end of the year where your running out of puff what was going to happen?
Hes flying in the preseason and is timed down so his fitness will be up. I would watch out putting him on the never again list might bite you in the bum.

There are plenty of equally good options in the forward line who I would rather get. Also, I'm pretty sure he was flying through last preseason too...

I disagree with that statement but i leave it alone. Martin will be in the top 6 forwards this year. He was to big last year and couldn't last the match. Then when silly off field and season was lost to him.
Is young and will improve just look at 2 years ago to see what he can do. But this is why we love supercoach everyone loves it and has there own options about players.
Will be in my side in 2013 and im hoping will get up to about a 105 ave

Locked. Plenty of upside, cannot see him averaging less than last year. Only problem is disciplinary issues.

Nice one Jay. Dustin Martin along with Sidebottom, Beams, Dangerfield were all of similiar stature in 2011 and touted to breakout in 2012. Three of these did. Martin could well do the same in 2013. With players such as Thomas, Robinson, Sylvia as all vying for a position on my team, this is a difficult one.
Will pick 2 maybe 3 of these 4. I do have a liking for Martin for what he promises to produce...he should get back to 2011 and therefore improve his av. by 10 over 2012, so looks good at the minute.

Just like to say Sidebottom and Beams were coming into there fourth season, Dangerfield his fifth. Martin's was only his third.
Yes he was talked up as a breakout but was it a year to early?
Only Beams ave more then Martin in his third year, Going by them stats his in for a huge season im thinking.

Looking at the votes we have a pretty even spread across all options for Dusty.

I think alot depends on how they use him, he scores playing in the middle and one out at full-forward but when he plays on the flank he barely touches it.
With a deeper midfield and Vickery back as the second tall in the forward line it is hard to see him not wandering around on the flank for long periods.

No for me unless he rotates through the guts ALOT more which i just cant see happening anymore with the (re)surgence of Tuck and Cotchin, Lids, etc. I enjoy watching him play but he is awfully frustrating to have in your sc team and can go missing for long periods. With only 6 spots in the fwd line, along with our R/F options who all should average 100+, i won't be taking the punt on him next year.

First, be prepared to do the hard thing- ignore your Personal Preference for Martin based on whether you had him or not last year.

I had him last year and was bitterly disappointed.
But that is irrelevant for this year since Dusty does not yet have a 'pattern' that we can judge him on. If he had scored a little less his 1st 2 years and a little more last year, he would be on a lot of people's break out lists.

I will happily choose him again if he fits my team structure. He will not be a 'safe' play this year but he does have a good risk/reward profile that will get better if more and more people opt out because he annoyed them last year. I need a better reason than that.
