Carlton could have a 'young and vibrant midfield' containing Cooney, Judd, Carrazzo, McLean, Murphy and Gibbs round 1 next season. I guess they are banking on the first three breaking down to give some players who have a chance of being in the next premiership side a chance.

Dayne Beams news:

Redden confirmed going nowhere by Justin Leppitsch via Twiter.

Lions say they're open to trading picks 5 and 25.

My gut feeling is something will have to happen to involve a three way club deal that sees Beams goto Brisbane, Greenwood to Pies and North get some draft picks from Lions and maybe pick 5 to Pies. Something like that seems on the cards unless someone like Rich was willing to goto Pies with a draft pick.

How's this for a suggestion:

Collingwood get Greenwood and pick 5.
Brisbane get Beams.
North gets picks 25 and 30.

Seems like all parties win there to me?

"Carlton and the Western Bulldogs have had discussions about a potential trade involving Adam Cooney.

The clubs have spoken about a deal in which the Blues would secure out-of-contract Bulldogs forward Liam Jones, as well as Cooney and the Bulldogs' third-round pick, 45.

The Dogs are determined to move as high up the draft order as possible, and would receive Carlton's pick 28 in return."

Surely this isn't the case...
Jones, Cooney and 45 for 28?

No way, it'd have to be with another player involved - what's the source?
If true both club list managers need to be strung up on nearest tree
Source is The Age.
Surely the Bulldogs could do something way better with Cooney. Maybe Cooney and pick 6 to Melbourne for Pick 3, which they could then use to get Patrick McCartin?

P.S. I'm really enjoying coming up with these trade ideas. How do you become an AFL list manager? :rolleyes:

Isn't Greenwood a free agent?? He can just walk can't he. No need to be involved in a trade deal. Or am I wrong?

great to hear Lions CEO come out and say picks 5 and 25 are our offer for Beams and that he won't let a first team player go. exactly the philosophy needed to keep members and supporters happy after the debacles in recent years.

Agreed. Brisbane need to stand firm here. Beams wants to go/is gone for one of the best reasons imaginable, they don't need to give the farm away.

Geez, relying on Armfield to lead the young brigade!

Gibbs improved this year which was great, and Murphy can go at that elite level occasionally but the depth just isn't there for Carlton, anywhere on the park.

You would probably do a better job than some of these blokes like Dodoro!

Collingwood should feel lucky if they get that. I wouldn't have added another pick. 5 + Lester/Crisp is what I'd have done.

But yeah, they should accept that, Beams is as good as gone, and move on - they're holding up trade week!

Hoping someone can confirm the rumours around Ryder.

If I'm not mistaken, Essendon delist Ryder and he becomes a free agent. Goes to Port as a free agent, and Essendon get 1st round compo pick after their pick so no.21.

Then Port sends their 1st rounder to Essendon in a deal (that is not at all dodgy) for some later picks and some players.

The idea is that Essendon voids/annuls his contract hence making him a free agent. Thus should get a first round compo pick for him. Then Port trade pick 19 for say Hardingham or some other low value player. Hence Essendon get two early picks while Port only have to give up one with the AFL providing the other. The reason for the extra player in the trade is the stand alone trade needs to be of 'commercial value' even though everyone knows the player is no where near worth that.

It is very very dodgy!!!

No compo for delisted free agents.

That's correct if Ryder manages to prove the so called 'Clause'.

What I believe vc was referring to is the recent AFL article on this other idea whereby Essendon agrees to null Ryder's contract.

Yep, thanks for clearing that up.

So much crap has gone on at Essendon, any chance this is another one? (draft tampering)

Well the article on the AFL website says both Essendon and Port have discussed this with the AFL who advised it was 'a course of action available'. So its all ok, it has AFL approval!

I don't think i've seen this posted, but it will help to understand free agency.

http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/free-agency

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

-Players who are in the top 25 per cent of salaries at their club (that is, in the club’s top nine-10 paid players) are eligible for restricted free agency the first time they are out of contract, if they have served at least eight years with the club.
For example, a player who is contracted after his seventh year for one, two, three, four or five years will be eligible for restricted free agency when next out of contract having completed either eight, nine, 10, 11 or 12 seasons respectively.

-A top 25 per cent player is eligible for unrestricted free agency when next out of contract, provided a player can never be an unrestricted free agent until completing at least 10 years’ service at one club.
For example, a player who signs a one-year contract after his eighth season is not eligible for unrestricted free agency until he has completed at least 10 years’ service.

-Restricted free agents have the right to move to a club of their choice, subject to the current club’s right of first refusal over their services. That is, if the current club can ‘match’ the offer from a suitor club, the player must stay or enter the draft. The tabled offer includes only football payments and Additional Service Agreements (ASA) amounts.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

Primary List
Players delisted by a club are unrestricted free agents but a player who retires or delists himself is not eligible to be a free agent.
Players who are not in the top 25 per cent of salaries at their club (that is, in the club’s top nine-10 paid players) are eligible for unrestricted free agency if they have served at least eight years with the club.

Rookie List
A rookie list player who retires is not eligible to be a free agent.
A first-year rookie not receiving a second-year rookie contract offer is considered a delisted player and therefore is an unrestricted free agent.
A first-year rookie not accepting a second-year rookie contract offer is not considered a delisted player and must nominate and go through the draft.
A second-year rookie not accepting a third-year rookie contract offer is considered a delisted player and therefore is an unrestricted free agent.

HOW THE TOP 25 PER CENT IS DETERMINED

The top 25 per cent of players on a club’s list (top nine-10 paid players) are based on the guaranteed contract values in the relevant contract year (including ASAs).
The AFL releases the names of those eligible players before round one of each season. An updated list of restricted and unrestricted free agents is issued during the season when changes occur and a final list issued during Grand Final week.

MATCHING OFFERS

A contract offer is matched if the football payments and ASAs are equivalent under the offer and the contract proposed by the player’s current club. To qualify as a matching offer, the player’s current club must make an offer on the same terms as the new offer tabled by the player including:

• Contract length;
• Base payments;
• Total match payments;
• Total ASA payments;

Total performance incentives based on AFL awards or honours, club best and fairest finish or games played (not including finals). Any incentives for team performance do not have to be matched. A player cannot table an offer to be matched for less than a two-year contract length.

COMPENSATION

A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:
1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

As Phil said very, very dodgy..... and it's been blocked by the AFL apparently:
