i have looked at the impact taggers will have on Liberatore, since Griffin is gone.

Liberatore's 2014 season average : 110
Liberatore's 2014 average only when he played with Griffin : 114.9
Liberatore's 2014 average when Griffin didn't play : 81 (3 game average)

Cooling on Swan, but at 460k don't think I can risk not starting him when every team in the country probably will

Welcome to the site Jordan - good to have you aboard.
I agree - I think Libba is a real concern when tagged and with Griffen gone, I won't be selecting him this year. I would love to be proven wrong as he can be a real beast, but too much risk this year for mine.

I'm a bit concerned about the recent reports that he is just getting back into full training. If he is a bit underdone, does this mean that he will spend more time in the Fwd line early in the season and thus continue to post low scores like last year? The season does start a few weeks later this year due to the World Cup so hopefully this gives him enough time to get fit. Definitely one to watch during NAB Cup, but I think he will need to be in my starting team unless clearly injured/underdone.

Higgins moving to North Melbourne has left open a spot in the backline at the kennel and the player most likely to take it would be a small defender who plays that quarter back type rebounding role that higgins played. i am looking at Jason Johannisen (played 11 games 2014)
Yes the South African's supercoach average for 2014 doesn't look too impressive at a measly 64 and awkwardly priced this year at $334,500 nothing really jumps out at you.
Shaun Higgins missed 2 games last year, they were rounds 17 and 18.
JJ (Jason Johannisen) played 11 games in 2014, missed some to small injuries and struggled to break into the bulldogs side due to having to compete with Shaun Higgins for that role at the Dogs. in the 2 games that Shaun Higgins missed JJ scored 118 and 107 for an average of 113.
In the 2 games that Shaun Higgins missed JJ played the role of the rebounding half back flanker using his speed and accurate kicking to hit targets up the ground.

JJ's average without Shaun Higgins = 113
JJ's average with Shaun Higgins = 53
JJ's 2014 season average = 64

also to add his average before bye was = 39
and his average post bye was = 85

it is hard to put him in your team now but he is definitely placed very high on my NAB CUP watch-list.
I think he might of been injured in the 2014 pre season but i cant confirm this but im pretty sure he was injured once during the year, if anyone knows when please tell me.
not sure what the deal with Brett Goodes is, im pretty sure he is on the rookie list but he did play Shaun higgins role 2 years ago when Higgins was injured and scored quite well but Goodes is still on the rookie list and unless he is elevated i would be looking at JJ.

^^ Interesting analysis. Quite a few names have been thrown around a mid price options in Defence, but this is the first time I've seen anything about JJ. Definitely one to watch.

Could Sam Darley also not play that rebounding role vacated by Higgins? Styles himself on Lindsay Gilbee and surely will be given some games this season and possibly even some time in their midfield as well.

I have absolutely no idea who will replace Higgins. There are a lot more names then JJ that could replace Higgins spot. We have been recruiting a lot of defenders over the past few years all with the desire for a premium attacking half back (e.g. Shaw, Simpson).

This is a list of defenders that we have to pick 6 from:

Brett Goodes: On rookie list but has a lot of experience that could push for a senior position if there is a LTI. Age is a huge factor. Won the best on ground for Footscray in VFL grand final. Is a running half back.

Dale Morris: Legend. Is a KPP. With a fit Roughead, he is our CHB. Can play on best defender but is under-sized. Will always be in our best 22 if fit.

Daniel Pearce: Was redrafted in rookie draft. Not sure his position but looks like a back pocket - more lock-down player than attacking defender.

Easton Wood: Has never played a full season. Very injury prone and has been dropped for poor form. Should be in our best 22 (even though I don't really like him). I guess he is a running defender.

Fletcher Roberts: Hopefully one day he becomes a powerful KPP. Stands at 196cm. Still very under developed and 2014 saw him play regularly in reserves with a few games here and there. Most likely our replacement if Roughead is down.

JJ: Is a pure running defender. I can see him playing on the wing at some stages this coming season. Was in and out of our team in 2014.

Joel Hamling: Was previously a Cats player. Will be a KPP. Could be a replacement for Dale Morris when he retires. No idea where he is in development.

Jordan Kelly: redafted in rookie draft 2014. Know idea about him. Is 191cm so could be our 3rd tall in a few years.

Jordan Roughead: Is our FB. Not uch to say about him. Is in our best 22 if fit.

Liam Picken: Has been used as a lock-down defender and tagger in the midfield. Tough player. Should be in our best 22.

Lin Jong: Is listed as midfielder but has had a few stints in defence early in his career. Is now off rookie list and has tracking well. Might be a fight between JJ and Lin Jong but no idea.

Matt Fuller: Was supposed to be the Brett Goodes of 2014 but didn't get a game. Was injured later part of the season. Came to the club as a mature recruit but apparently was a lot less developed than first thought. I think we thought he could walk in like Matt Suckling of Hawks. No idea. But was recruited as running back - just look at Matt Suckling.

Michael Talia: Only got 3 senior games in 2014. Is still "raw" by all reports. Still needs developing in VFL. Is a key position player. Hopefully he becomes like his older brother from Crows.

Bob Murphy: Captain so will retain his attacking role off half back. I think he has at the very most 2 more seasons. We are probably nurturing JJ to fill the void when he retires.

Sam Darley: Only played a few senior games in 2014. Was traded from GWS to be an attacking half back. But we have a lot of these type of players.

Shane Biggs: IMO from all reports, most likely to replace Higgins position in the side. Sad that he is only listed as a midfielder otherwise I would have locked him in in defence (if played a lot of pre-season games). Is a huge threat to JJ.

Zaine Cordy: Hopefully better then his older brother Ayce Cordy. He is "going to be", with development, a KPP but if he has the same genes as his brother, is just reserves fodder ONLY. Will not get games this season.

Goodes is a midfielder first and foremost, he was pushed into the backline because they needed him there. Look at the VFL Final

I think he's there solely as depth.

Murphy takes one wing, JJ/Biggs takes the other and Wood is on the bench/emergencies. Pearce, Fuller Darley in the magoos.

Jong looks interesting, but may be fighting with Clay Smith? Always a sub risk too.

HE TURNS 31 in May and is still nursing his shoulder, but that hasn't stopped Gold Coast superstar Gary Ablett clocking a personal best in the Suns' two-kilometre time trial.

In a performance that will lift the spirits of Gold Coast supporters everywhere, Ablett proved his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery hadn't slowed him down on his second day back at training on Friday.

Still on a modified training program after his season was cut short by a dislocated shoulder in round 16, Ablett dug deep in the gruelling fitness test to shave a few seconds of his best ever mark.

"It was his best by only a second or two, but that was a really good sign because he has been in rehab a fair bit," Suns coach Rodney Eade told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"It is the first one he has done (since the operation) and he's already got a PB."

Keen to get a jump-start on pre-season, Ablett returned to training four days early in mid-November and has advanced to full-ground skills drills with the Suns' main group.

The two-time Brownlow medallist took some overhead marks during training on Friday and later tweeted he would "Start full contact work late Feb".

Ablett and the Suns are hopeful he will then play a part in the NAB Challenge campaign, starting against Geelong on March 1 and ending at home against the Brisbane Lions on March 20.

But in the meantime the 268-game champion has been challenged to keep building his fitness.

"We've given him a target to get to by the end of January – all the players have – so we want him to get the time down a bit further now," Eade said.

The new coach has been pleased with the shape of his squad on their return to pre-season training, particularly ruckmen Daniel Gorringe and Zac Smith.

Gorringe won the first division of the time trial ahead of Kade Kolodjashnij and rookie Josh Glenn, before Smith took the honours in the second group.

"We're happy with the way the players have come back from the break," Eade said.

"They were all in range of what we set for skinfolds and I reckon 80 per cent were in range of what we set for the trial.

"But to have two tall men do what they did was a good sign. If they can run like that it's a huge advantage."

Meanwhile, the Suns confirmed mature-age rookie Andrew Raines would not have surgery after he strained his posterior cruciate ligament on Wednesday.

The injury was a bitter blow to the 28-year-old midfielder, who is hoping to reignite his career at a third club after 123 games for Richmond and the Brisbane Lions.

"He'll be eight to 10 weeks but we're confident it will be closer to eight," Eade said.

Dogs might have a new coach but I am almost certain Beveridge would not risk moving Murphy to the wing. We need his experience, footy smarts and run off half back. JJ and Biggs I could see having a go on the wing. Possibly JJ more as he would be above Biggs on the pecking order. However, there are more names that are likely to play on the wing. But I am very uncertain with Griff, Higgins and Cooney gone. I have no idea who replaces who and, in effect, who replaces the person replacing Griff and co. Macrae, Steven, Hunter, Dahl, Hrovat can play between wing, mid (as second/third drop) and half forward/pocket. I don't think Jong will start round 1 barring someone else's injury or amazing form. Clay Smith is a wing but is not 100% from AC injury.

Sub risks (now that our super sub Gia is not playing) is likely a small forward like Hrovat/Honeychurch, if we play Tom Campbell, Smith (when he returns), Jong, any first gamers, and even Tom Boyd (need him to last the 7 years).

This article sums up the preseason nicely.

Titus O’Reily: AFL pre-season the most accurate guide you’ll read

Titus O’Reily Herald Sun January 12, 2015 11:00AM

LET’S see who is firing on the training track at your club during the pre-season. This is the most accurate guide you’ll ever read.

Adelaide: Everyone. Patrick Dangerfield is doing especially well, which is good news for whoever he goes to next year.

Brisbane: Everyone, never before in the history of time has there been a better pre-season. The new guy with the tattoos is going especially well.

Carlton: Everyone. Chris Judd looks like a million dollars, mainly because Visy once gave him a million dollars.

Collingwood: Everyone, especially Bucks. Even Eddie walked up the stairs without pausing for a breather.

Essendon: Everyone. Dustin Fletcher could be in his mid-thirties.

Fremantle: Everyone. Real estate prices in Fremantle are so high because of all the houses that are being trained down.

Geelong: Everyone. Even though the time trial was a week ago, the track is still burning.

Gold Coast: Just Gary Ablett really.

GWS: Everyone, I forget most of their names though.

Hawthorn: Everyone, although pre is still wondering what hit him.

Melbourne: Everyone. The paleo diet has the demons hungry for the first time in years.

North Melbourne: Everyone. Jarrad Waite hasn’t even been suspended this season yet.

Port Adelaide: Everyone. A trip to Dubai has made the players really appreciate Adelaide.

Richmond: Everyone. Pre-season started off terribly but they’re flying now.

St Kilda: Everyone. If pre-season lasted all year this would be a great season.

Sydney: Everyone. The Swans all got a good rest during last year’s Grand Final, so are in top condition.

West Coast: Everyone. At this rate, everyone will be playing in the midfield, which is good because they didn’t have one last season.

Western Bulldogs: Everyone. Ryan Griffen is really earning his pay.
