He will get opportunity, he can find the ball, he has the desire and professionalism but can he step up? He's saying all the right things at least.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-01-21/adams-after-more-responsibility

TAYLOR Adams is determined to own a position in Collingwood's midfield in 2015, saying he would be "angry" if coach Nathan Buckley wasn't thinking of giving him an opportunity to cement himself in the side.

Following the departures of Luke Ball (retired), Dayne Beams (Brisbane Lions) and Heritier Lumumba (Melbourne), Collingwood's midfield is suddenly light on for proven options.

Asked whether Buckley should consider him as a candidate to step up and fill the void, Adams was typically forthright in his response.

"I'd be ****ed off if he (Buckley) didn't," Adams told AFL.com.au.

"There's a handful of guys there that can do it and if I wasn't in that handful I'd be pretty angry and disappointed.

"I think I've done enough developing to certainly step up."

Adams, 21, is set to enter his fourth season in the AFL, with 2015 marking his second year at the Westpac Centre after being part of the deal that sent Collingwood favourite Heath Shaw to Greater Western Sydney ahead of the 2014 season.

Those at the Magpies say Adams, who has 43 career games under his belt, is ready to go to the next level, pointing to his increased leadership qualities around the club.

Adams sees it as his responsibility to step into the leadership breach vacated by seasoned veterans like Ball and Nick Maxwell.

"It comes with confidence. I've had a pretty good pre-season and I know the game-plan and I know where I want the club to go," Adams said.

"If I think something's wrong, then I'm not afraid to speak up and say something."

Who is Collingwood's most important player?

Adams managed 12 games in his first season at the Magpies.

He bounced between the VFL and the AFL for much of the first half of 2014, but proved his value with 28 disposals and seven tackles in the Magpies' thrilling six-point win over Port Adelaide in round 19.

That day, Adams played out the game with a torn ligament in his finger – an injury that would end his season the next week.

Although 2014 did not pan out the way he might have envisaged, Adams learnt a lot about what it takes to play football at a consistent level.

"I felt a fair bit of pressure last year playing in front of big crowds and once I played a couple of bad games in a row my confidence dropped and I started to doubt myself," Adams said.

"I hadn't been put under the microscope like that and it took a bit of getting used to."

One main lesson he learned was to not become consumed by poor performances, while he also identified the need to find a vice outside of football.

As such, Adams enrolled in a business management course at university so he doesn't become a "footy nut".

"At stages last year, I probably overdid it and got myself into a pretty deep hole. I had no confidence, even though I was doing all the work and I was doing all these extra sessions," Adams said.

"When things weren't working game day, it made me realise that I needed a break and that it's good to have things outside of football to … take your mind away from it."

As much as Adams enjoys having balance in his life, whenever he's at the club he has an intense mindset.

He has been working closely with development coach Craig Macrae and midfield coach Scott Burns on his kicking and his decision-making under pressure.

Disposing of the ball cleanly was an area that let him down last season, reflected by a relatively low efficiency rating (66 per cent).

"When I start to fatigue, my ball drop can be a bit high at times. That leaves a lot more room for error," Adams said.

"As they say fatigue makes fools of us all, but you look at guys like Pendles (captain Scott Pendlebury) who perform so well under fatigue so that's where I've got to get to."

Dane Swan back to full training at Collingwood after hip surgery

COLLINGWOOD champion Dane Swan has been cleared to return to full training following successful post-season surgery on his hip.

The Magpies ball magnet re-joined the main training group on Monday and is expected to be available for the club’s NAB Challenge games, starting next month.

Swan, 31, has followed a modified training program over summer in a bid to regain the top fitness levels that eluded him during an injury-marred 2014.

In another boost for Nathan Buckley’s men, former Kangaroos hard-nut Levi Greenwood is also back in full training after making a full recovery from some shin soreness that troubled him at times last season.

Swan described his production last season as “horrendous”, finishing outside the top-10 of the Pies’ best and fairest for the first time since 2005.
But football manager Neil Balme said the Pies were pleased with the veteran’s progress since returning from the Christmas break.

“Dane is training very well. He has had a fair bit of surgery post season, so what we are doing is working to get him to a position of fitness where he can play,” Balme told the club’s website.

“He is training virtually every day and training very hard.

“He has still got a reasonable amount of work to do, but we are quite pleased with him.”

According to Champion Data’s 2015 Prospectus, Swan averaged 150m fewer per game last season as he dealt with up to four separate injuries.

The Pies will head to Queenstown next week for a week-long camp where Balme said there would be “a bit of a change of focus” to the summer program.

“We will still do a reasonable amount of training but there will be a bit more team development and game development and a bit of other experiential stuff,” he said.

Really good stuff guys.

Defenders will be the toughest position to nail this year IMO - next to no worthwhile DPPs, premiums all genuine defenders and a lack of worthwhile rookies (at this stage) who will play early. We might be seeing a lot of breakout contenders and mid-pricers

JUST LOCK HIM IN AND THROW AWAY THE KEY!

Nic Naitanui says he's determined to silence his critics, with the West Coast ruckman declaring he's ready to "prove a point" next season.

The Eagles big man is in the midst of his first full pre-season for three years and Naitanui said he's primed to make a bigger impact in 2015.

"Yeah, I am. I can't wait. We’ve done a fair bit of running this summer and I've never looked forward to round one more than this year," he said.

"Obviously last year (I was) a bit hampered and (wasn’t) able to perform as well as I wanted to. This year I've got a bit of a point to prove."

Naitanui has battled groin issues that surfaced after his All Australian campaign in 2012 and he's failed to perform to his own expectations on a consistent basis since.

But he's feeling fit in January for the first time in years and is reaping the benefits of the Eagles' gruelling pre-season in the Perth heat.

"It's unusual, I think in previous years I've only clocked up maybe 20 or 30 hours of actual track time in the pre-season," Naitanui said.

"So I've surpassed that by a couple of hundred hours so far. It's a different feeling – it's a great feeling – and I'm looking forward to the year ahead.

"Normally I've come back for one NAB Cup game and gone straight into playing footy, which probably has hurt me a bit.

"But this year, coming in having run since the AFL Grand Final last year, and having that consistency is probably going to put me in good stead come round one."

Naitanui showed glimpses of his best in 20 games last season, but the former No.2 NAB AFL Draft pick struggled to have a consistent impact away from ruck contests.

He won almost 22 hit-outs per game but he's hoping to improve on the 12 disposals and 1.5 marks he averaged as the Eagles missed the finals for the second-straight season.

Retired West Coast champion Dean Cox remains at the club as ruck coach and Naitanui said he will try to emulate the six-time All Australian, whose elite endurance and skills allowed him to play like a midfielder.

"Yeah, a bit of that. I'll still play to my strengths and what I bring to the team," Naitanui said at Etihad Stadium after the AFL announced its Multicultural Program will expand in 2015.

"Evolving to what Dean has done and what he's shown over his career is something that I look to emulate and try and mimic out on the field.

"Having 'Coxy' there at training, doing my vision – stuff that he's done in the past – but having that more week-in, week-out will obviously help that as well.

"It's awesome having him there as a coach (and) mentor. Myself, Scotty Lycett and Cal Sinclair are in a pretty privileged position."

I'm picking NicNat but I'm also expecting him to miss a few games because West Coast have 3 good ruckmen. Simpson won't want Sinclair to spend the whole year in the WAFL.

Sinclair played 4 games (rounds 1, 2, 3 and 17) last season with Nic Nat (all 4 games), Cox (rounds 1, 2 and 3) and Lycett (round 17) in he side. With Cox retiring i'm sure he will get a handful of games again at minimum.

Will a handful of games 49.8 points per game and 267k be worth it?

Sorry but have to disagree there... Nic Nat is having probably the best pre-season of his career. He is so important and make's so much difference to the way we play when fully fit that there is no chance at all of him not playing just because as you say we have Sinclair as our third ruckman and might want to get games into him. And Lycett is a much better player than Sinclair as well and provided he is fit will always play before Sinclair. It's pretty simple... If Nic Nat and Lycett are fit... they play... And Sinclair will have to wait his turn.

Thanks LITS. I remember Simpson saying last year that all his ruckmen would take their turn having a rest but maybe this was because he didn't think they were in contention.

Yeah that was the case last season but it was a pretty unique situation... Nic Nat was coming off a preseason ruined by a groin injury and had to be nursed through the year, Cox was trying to get to 300 games before deciding to retire and then being managed through the rest of the season, Lycett was coming out of contract and vital to our future after Cox had retired so we didn't want to **** him off and lose him to Port and Sinclair was also important as he was going to move up a notch to 3rd ruck after Cox leaving.

This year is much different with Cox gone, Nic Nat fully fit and ready to dominate, And Lycett ready to show the world why he was rated so high.

Zaine cordy out for four months Putting a dagger in our premiership hopes
At least it's not Ayce. You'd be in real danger of the spoon if he was out.
Ayce Cordy is an integral part of our side. Wh-without Ayce, who would be there for us to kick 5 goals IN THAT ONE GAME (in the VFL)!?!?! Who would be that skinny white man-let child running after undersized defences like the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk? Who would be there to replace him in our premiership defence? Who I ask you? WHO?!?!?!

In all honesty, it looks like the bulldogs have been starving Ayce Cordy for some undisclosed reason. I mean seriously, it is called a bloody squat. Eat a steak. BULK!!! You are 2.04cm. You are supposed to be a force on the field not forced to keep rocks in your shorts so you won't get picked up and taken away by a strong breeze.

I mean he's skinny all round, but the question has to be asked; when was the last time he did leg day?
