Some good info about the Eagles preseason so far...

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/ad...-waters-x-factor/story-fndv8w9k-1227195638951

The Eagles coach predicts a more stable starting combination in 2104. He expects the performances of Nic Naitanui, Scott Lycett, Chris Masten, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff, Jeremy McGovern and eventually injured duo Scott Selwood and Jack Darling to be the club’s barometer this season.

“They’re the next era that must form the frontline of performances at our club,” Simpson said.

The Eagles boss confidently tipped vast improvement from the heavily-criticised midfield and declared Beau Waters the “unknown” in West Coast’s premiership hopes.

And an emotional early playing return from inspirational defender Waters is on the cards.

"If West Coast played this week, the injury-ravaged 2006 premiership back liner would be in the starting 18", said Simpson.

Beau Waters is a strong chance to return from injury in the NAB Challenge.

"He is a standout performer over this summer and has been conspicuous with trademark run and dash from backward of centre alongside new captain Shannon Hurn since returning from Christmas holidays."

“He’s training at a level that is really high in terms of time on the track and his GPS and we’re just now going into some more competitive drills and he’s doing them pretty easily. But we haven’t thrown him in the deep end and I don’t want him to until as late as we can.

Simpson predicted Waters to return during the NAB Challenge.

Simpson confessed the best is yet to come from Wellingham, who is injury-free and in full training, as well as Naitanui.

The polarising big man is completing his finest and only first pre-season program since being drafted in 2008.

Simpson expects Naitanui to significantly increase his productivity on last season when he averaged 12 disposals, 22 hit-outs and nine contested possessions in 20 games.

“He hasn’t done everything and he never will, but Nic’s given himself every opportunity to perform better and to perform at a level that we all hope he performs at,” Simpson said.

“He rides the wave of expectation more than anyone, but at least now he’s had a really look at a pre-season and continuity with training and connection with our other forwards and midfielders.

“So I’m hoping that we can see a consistency at another level.”

Simpson gave clear indication he is unlikely to persist with a strategy of playing three ruckmen in his starting 22 with Naitanui, Lycett and Callum Sinclair all secure on the list following the retirement of champion big man Dean Cox.

It was at cumbersome last season as Simpson and his support coaches experimenting with three burly big men in his outfit as well as Kennedy and Darling up forward.

“I think you’ll see a more settled team, still flexible.

“They know their roles better now and how to execute their role better than last year.”

Also found this which is not good news for those of us who are Eagles fans or looking at him for our SC teams...

WEST Coast coach Adam Simpson has all but conceded forward Jack Darling and on-baller Scott Selwood will miss Round 1 of the AFL season.

Selwood, 24, made a brief appearance with light running at training early this week but also appears unlikely to play any summer NAB Challenge games.

I assume this is under the much talked about new "Great Great Grandfather-Great Grandfather-Grandfather-Father-Son" rule the AFL is thinking of implementing! :p

..... either that, or West Coast is banking on the experience of 112 year old players to pull them through! :p

Hahaha... I didn't even notice that in the article. If those guys are still playing at that age we are in deep trouble, lol

Ayce Cordy is an integral part of our side. Wh-without Ayce, who would be there for us to kick 5 goals IN THAT ONE GAME (in the VFL)!?!?! Who would be that skinny white man-let child running after undersized defences like the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk? Who would be there to replace him in our premiership defence? Who I ask you? WHO?!?!?!

In all honesty, it looks like the bulldogs have been starving Ayce Cordy for some undisclosed reason. I mean seriously, it is called a bloody squat. Eat a steak. BULK!!! You are 2.04cm. You are supposed to be a force on the field not forced to keep rocks in your shorts so you won't get picked up and taken away by a strong breeze.

The club has to shoulder most of the blame. They need to organise the programs to bulk him up, if it's a case of him not following it then he shouldn't be on the list.

I certainly agree. The club should have put goals every off season for Cordy to come back 3kgs-4kgs heavier and stronger (which they may have done and Cordy succeed but it doesn't look like it). I would be interested to hear what they have to say about Cordy's size compared to Tom Campbell and about his (Cordy's) training schedule/regime. He has been at the club long enough for the coin to drop for both Cordy and the coaches. He either needs to put on a significant amount of weight to be able to compete with ruckman like Mumford, Jacobs and Goldstein or leave. Bulldogs aren't (hopefully) going to keep him on their list until he effectively retires in his low to mid 30s because his father was an ex-player. I will give him 2 and at the very most 3 years until the club wakes up. 24 years old, 2.04m, 99kgs, drafted #14 in 2008, 20 career games, 1 game in 2014. He is lucky he has an ex-dogs father.

Not ideal for those considering him...

Collingwood is satisfied Paul Seedsman's hip is in good shape after he underwent exploratory surgery on Friday because he was experiencing minor soreness in the joint.
The club said the minor procedure was a precautionary measure to ensure the 23-year-old defender's soreness was not due to any structural issue.

Hey guys, I'm part of the SuperCoach team here at the Herald Sun.
You can certainly play SuperCoach for free again this year - but if you want extra tips, stats and advice you can upgrade to SuperCoach Gold.
SuperCoach Gold subscriptions remain the same price as last year, which is $19.95 for the season.

I'm thinking this is true, assuming the Herald Sun wouldn't let that message be shown if not legit, so phheeewww. :)

Jeremy Howe - Hamstring Injury (from AFL website)

JEREMY Howe is set to miss the start of Melbourne's NAB Challenge campaign after scans revealed a strain in his right hamstring.

The Demons sent Howe for scans on Tuesday after he sustained the injury in the final training session of the club's pre-season camp at Maroochydore last week.

Howe was managed conservatively at training this week and only participated in light ball work at Gosch's Paddock on Wednesday morning.

Demons football manager Josh Mahoney told AFL.com.au Howe would miss up to three weeks of pre-season training, but the club was confident he would be available for the start of the season proper.

"Jeremy had an incident on the last day of our camp to the Sunshine Coast," Mahoney said.

"Scans have revealed that he's got a strain in his hamstring.

"Given the position of the injury, within his hamstring, we'll treat it conservatively but we don't expect him to miss the start ofthe season."

Young Demon down with knee injury, again

Mahoney said the club still expected Howe to be available for the latter stages of the NAB Challenge series, which begins for Melbourne against Fremantle on March 5.

However, the news is better for gun midfielder Bernie Vince, who has also had his pre-season interrupted by a niggling hamstring complaint.

Vince trained away from the main group on Wednesday morning and ran a series of timed laps. Mahoney said the onballer was getting close to joining in full training again.

Defender Jack Grimes also had minor surgery to fix a broken nose on Tuesday and trained in the rehab group on Wednesday morning.

However, he won't miss any training time with Mahoney confirming Grimes would be back in full training on Friday.

I like it. People coughing up hard earned are finally getting something for there money.

Nathan, you say "finally getting something for their money", do you mean that they weren't getting anything for their subscription before this?
Surely the intention of the subscription was to have access to the News Network service! Hasn't this alone justified their investment, or has the added bonus of participating in a knockout comp suddenly made it all worthwhile? I'd be seriously questioning the value of a subscription if this is the case.

Zim^zuM, do you really think that your subscription money pays for the provision of live scores? I suggest that it actually pays for the prize money allocated for News Network subscribers!
"Weekly Prizes: up to $10,000 cash per week depending on if winners are news network subscribers".

Are you guys waiting for an invite to the Herald Sun office party as well?

According to Suns coach, Rodney Eade, Gary Ablett has gone 'to another level' in terms of his fitness levels.
