#SUPERCOACH ALERT: Brett Deledio being carefully managed by @Richmond_FC due to ongoing Achilles pain. Same issue that limited him in 2014.

Keeping an eye on Harrison Wigg over the NAB. Is he fit and training Mr Young? I have read some really encouraging things regarding him. Lethal left foot I hear.

"Wigg won SA’s MVP in its carnival-winning under-18 side this year after averaging 19 disposals at 80 per cent efficiency in six games."

“So for us to get Wigg, who is a high quality kicker and a very good decision maker, his combination will be really important.’’

Definitely keep an eye on Wigg and maybe Lever.... On Lever though Walsh said 3 weeks ago "He's coming off an ACL, we hope he can fill into a key position down back this year, it might take him a bit of time before he settles into that"

Word on the street is that pre-season is under wraps and the guru Phil Walsh is being enigmatic.

My gut told me the Reilly injury meant something for NVB and Rick Henderson so I did some digging and hey presto!

"While Walsh needs to refit Adelaide’s back six — with veteran full back Ben Rutten’s retirement exposing the Crows to major challenges in covering tall forwards — the more likely candidates for new defensive roles at West Lakes are Ricky Henderson and van Berlo."

You could read in to this that Brodie Smith doesn't get a mention therefore he won't be sent back to defence ;)

I wonder if this is related to Hardwick's comment that Deledio would continue to play a reasonable amount of time forward in 2015?

From the AFL website today, apparently, Cotchin and D Martin are also managing hamstring soreness

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-02-11/safety-first-for-deledio
It's Feb 11 and I see comments on various forums about ditching Lids.........
They're not expecting the hiccups to Deledio, Martin and Cotchin's programs to hinder their preparation for the pre-season competition or round one, which is on April 2 for the Tigers.

Reckon he might be right in 8 weeks :)

Apparently Matt Scharenburg is commencing full training withr the aim of playing NAB Challenge. Very short layoff for an ACL injury.

Regardless we might have ourselves a defense rookie if the rumors are true

If thus is true, as you said this could be some very welcome news for our backline.

Hopefully we can get some solid information on his status/return prior to Rd 1.

Well there goes 1 of the 3 defenders I could rely on.

Believe it or not, my next in line is Alex Rance. A similar scorer, just that being a key defender makes him so unappetising.

Birchall blow: Hawk sidelined with medial strain

Alex Malcolm February 11, 2015 7:16 PM

HAWTHORN remains confident Grant Birchall will be available for the latter part of the NAB Challenge despite the defender missing four to six weeks due a knee injury. The 27-year-old damaged his medial ligament during a tackling drill at training last week and has already been ruled out of the Hawks' opening pre-season clash against Collingwood at Aurora Stadium on February 26.

It is the second time in two years Birchall has suffered a knee injury with the All Australian missing seven weeks of the 2013 season after damaging his posterior cruciate ligament. The three-time premiership player won't begin a running program until Monday but the Hawks still expect him to feature in the NAB Challenge.

Hawthorn meets North Melbourne at Deakin Reserve on March 8 before facing St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on March 19. The Hawks open the premiership season with the traditional Easter Monday blockbuster against Geelong April 6.

Yep according to a couple of fans who braved the heat yesterday to watch the Pies train have reported that Scharenberg participated in full training including contact and match simulation drills. I would think the Pies will still be cautious with him, so unsure if he'll be right to go round 1, but he is definitely ahead of Caff now, who is still not training with the main group and in fact missed training yesterday altogether.

Will anybody still pick Birchall if he is named round 1?

I think I probably will.

If he plays some minutes in the Hawks last Nab Cup game which is five weeks from now and gets through unscathed I will consider. If not then probably not.

This injury will at least make him a very solid POD. It'll scare a few off. I still like him, but will be planning without him and seeing what happens.

Birch has only gone over 90 two times in 9 seasons and only made 22 games three times

It surprised me when I looked it up. I know some injury affected games have influenced this but they are regular enough that you may have to include those games.

High standard deviation in scores mean likely drop to $400k at some point. Now with a 6 week interruption to his pre-season he screams upgrade target to me.

Agree that he seems better as an upgrade target now. Hope that he drops a little first while he gets match fit.

Probably disagree that he has a high standard deviation though. His standard deviation was about 20 and was one of the lower standard deviation players in the competition in 2014. Pendlebury's was 19, Enright was 18, Jelwood was 23.

And if you look at recent form which is a better guide, he's averaged 92.4 over the last four seasons, and played over 20 games in 3 of those.

I like Birchall and he would've been in my side if not for this injury. I guess now we wait and see.

Jules last year across the season he had 56, 53, 37 and a 60. All in all 9 scores under 90 for the season (compensated by 5 times over 100).

He usually gets cheaper as do most defenders but when you add in now an interrupted pre-season he's even more likely to miss games and/or put in those low scores.

It is important to note that Birchall was required to play a lockdown role last year at times as a result of multiple injuries to the Hawks key defenders. This was a major reason for some of his low scores.
