Sam Jacobs, David Mackay suffer injury setbacks as Adelaide pre-season heats up
Scott Walsh
The Advertiser
January 21, 2015 8:00PM

ADELAIDE coach Phil Walsh says he is prepared to push players “off the cliff” in a searching pre-season that has claimed Sam Jacobs and David Mackay. Jacobs — arguably Adelaide’s most important player — is nursing a jarred medial ligament while wingman Mackay suffered a hamstring strain as Adelaide’s first pre-season under Walsh heats up. Recovery time for each player is unclear, but the injuries are considered likely four-week setbacks.

Adelaide’s first NAB Challenge game is against North Melbourne in Port Lincoln on March 1 — more than five weeks away.

Young midfielder Matt Crouch has also been forced to wear a moon boot following surgery two weeks ago to repair his left ankle after he fell awkwardly at training.

Morabito undergoes more surgery on his knee
Alex Malcolm January 21, 2015 3:15 PM

ANTHONY Morabito will undergo a minor operation on his troublesome left knee on Thursday that is expected to sideline him for up to three weeks. It was revealed on Tuesday that Morabito was experiencing ongoing soreness in the knee that has been reconstructed three times. He was visibly limping at the Dockers' team photo session in Fremantle on Tuesday afternoon. After consulting a specialist, Fremantle confirmed on Wednesday that Morabito would require surgery to repair some cartilage issues that have been hampering him throughout the pre-season. The recovery time from the surgery is expected to be two to three weeks.

No stress as scans clear Darling to resume running
Alex Malcolm January 21, 2015 12:48 PM

WEST Coast forward Jack Darling has been cleared to ramp up his rehabilitation from a stress fracture in his foot. Darling injured his foot in round 23 last season and had to spend six weeks in a moon boot during the off-season. The Eagles have been ultra-cautious with Darling's recovery and coach Adam Simpson said last week that he could not progress until scans showed signs of the bone healing. Eagles physiotherapist Paul Tucker told the club's website on Wednesday that Darling had been given the all-clear late last week. "Jack Darling had some really good news from the scans and his visit with the specialist on Friday last week," Tucker said. "We'd hope to see Jack now start to progress through his rehabilitation program."

Darling did not train with the main group on Monday, instead remaining with Scott Selwood (ankle) and Mark Hutchings (groin) to perform some stationary handball drills. The 22-year-old will be eased into a modified running program this week.

Callum Sinclair (finger) and Elliot Yeo (hand) made successful returns to training on Monday while Murray Newman (knee), Jamie Bennell (hamstring), Jeremy McGovern (hip) and Xavier Ellis (AC joint) all got through a modified training session without issue.

Couple of injuries. Firstly Chad Wingard missing 4 weeks of training.

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2015-01-27/knee-surgery-for-wingard

PORT Adelaide forward Chad Wingard will miss at least four weeks of training after undergoing minor knee surgery.

The 21-year-old had the clean up on his right knee on Tuesday morning after experiencing soreness last week.

Head of high performance Darren Burgess said given the season started later this year, the decision was made to have surgery now and allow the knee to recuperate.

"With the season still nine to 10 weeks away, we decided the right course of action was to get the surgery done now rather than waiting to see if rest would allow him to recover," Burgess said.

"The expectation is that Chad will be back on the track in four to six weeks."

Wingard has played 67 games in three seasons and was an All Australian in 2013.

Second a rookie I had been considering but probably no longer, ANB:

MELBOURNE youngster Alex Neal-Bullen has dislocated his knee for the second time in just over a month but the Demons are hopeful the 18-year-old will only be sidelined for up to three weeks.

The Demons sent Neal-Bullen, pick No.40 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, for scans after his right knee gave way during a training drill on Monday.

Neal-Bullen was carted from Gosch's Paddock in obvious discomfort following the incident.

No structural damage showed up in the scans.

Demons football manager Josh Mahoney told AFL.com.au the injury was a "minor dislocation".

"Alex had an incident at the end of training yesterday where he dislocated his patella," Mahoney said.

"It's the same knee that he dislocated pre-Christmas in a wrestling session.

"This is only a minor dislocation and we'd expect him to recover quite quickly."

As reported by AFL.com.au in mid-December, Neal-Bullen suffered a similar injury during a training drill.

Mahoney said the club was investigating why Neal-Bullen had suffered the same injury two times in a short space of time.

Mahoney said the Demons were hopeful Neal-Bullen would be available for selection in the NAB Challenge series, beginning for Melbourne on March 5 against Fremantle, following his rehabilitation.

The Demons are set to explore other methods in regard to Neal-Bullen's training program after the recurrence.

"There's a few things we'll have to add to his program to prevent this from happening again," Mahoney said.

After his initial injury, Neal-Bullen rejoined his teammates at training after the Christmas break and attended the club's camp at Maroochydore on Queensland's Sunshine Coast over the past fortnight.

The Glenelg product was regarded as a likely top-30 pick leading into the national draft and Melbourne was pleased to land Neal-Bullen alongside childhood friend Billy Stretch, who was taken at pick No.42 as a father-son recruit.

Melbourne still views Neal-Bullen as a potential debutant in 2015.

So that's about 3-4 rounds of the season proper? Might make Rich more appealing if he can get good time in the guts for the first couple of months.

I actually think it makes Rich less appealing becuase he will almost definitely be first in line for the tag now without Hanley playing.

He was never going to play early, fit I think he would have allowed Rampe to play the Eski role. Johnson a little bit taller and more of a lockdown defender.

I'm still a little unsure about his role tbh. Spending time off a back flank is what i remember reading which made him a no for mine but if he's rotating through the mids, i think he has the potential to put up a few good scores to get his price up.

I'd be tagging Beams first, then Pearce then Rich? I'm really not sure. Maybe this makes Claye a better option if he's looking to fill that spot in the midfield.

So that probably means Rampe is less likely to play the Eski role now...interesting!

Although Pearce Hanley is only a Midfielder this year and not really a consideration, it's the opportunity that could be created for someone else.

HANLEY OUT FOR 12 WEEKS

BRISBANE has been rocked by a hip injury to Pearce Hanley that will rule him out of the first month of the premiership season.
The Irish star will undergo surgery next week and is expected to be out of action for 12 weeks. The surgery will clean up cartilage and bone damage.
Hanley has felt sore throughout the pre-season, but the attempt was made to manage him through the training load.
However it has now been decided immediate surgery is required.

Hanley has become a genuine star of the AFL and was elevated to club vice-captain on Thursday.
“Pearce is obviously disappointed to miss the start of the season but the sensible approach is to have the surgery now,” said Dean Warren, Brisbane’s general manager of football operations.
“We have managed the injury through recent weeks, but there is no use playing through the season and making the injury worse.
“Pearce is a key part of our team and we will miss him but we would rather fix the problem now and make sure we get it right.”

Suns insist Gary Ablett will be back playing during pre-season cup
Terry Wilson
Gold Coast Bulletin
February 02, 2015 11:00PM

THE Gold Coast Suns insist that dual Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett remains on track for a return to action in the pre-season NAB Cup. The star midfielder raised eyebrows yesterday when he appeared to have restricted movement in his reconstructed left shoulder. Ablett merely ran laps, then had a few kicks and some marking practice, although he did not use his left arm when taking marks.

Ablett was in Melbourne late last week for a third check-up on his shoulder but Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft said the routine visit to the surgeon was all positive. “Gary met with the surgeon in Melbourne and he’s tracking along nicely,” Ashcroft said. “He’s on a program which our guys have had in place for a while now and from our point of view we have no problems or issues with his shoulder. “We think he’s on track to be right to play (by the NAB Cup).” Ashcroft also said the Suns and Ablett’s management were “progressing” towards a new contract extension which would see the midfield maestro sign on for a further three years. Coach Rodney Eade said Ablett was expected to “crank up” his training next week, leading to possible full-contact sessions within a fortnight.

Some bright news at Metricon Stadium was the return to the main training group of vice-captain Tom Lynch, Danny Stanley and courageous utility Seb Tape. And Eade said another midfield star Jaeger O’Meara would start running this week in his comeback from post-season surgery to both knees. “Jaeger was expected to start running today, but with the wet weather and slippery conditions it was decided not to,” Eade said. “But he will be resuming running this week.” Harley Bennell (calf), Trent McKenzie (hamstring) and Coast product Andrew Boston (ankle) are all expected to be back to full training tomorrow after weeks of running laps. And Eade said smart half-back Kade Kolodjashnij should be fine after he left the training session early yesterday with calf tightness.

From a Herald Sun article today. "Other than several players having interrupted pre-seasons — Jack Ziebell and Aaron Black (shoulders), Scott Thompson (knee), Goldstein (knee), Nathan Grima (foot), Robbie Tarrant (leg), Lachie Hansen (hip), Petrie (ankle) — because of injury, Swallow says the group and club has a good vibe".

I hope Goldstein's knee is only minor. Has anyone else heard anything about this??
