Because the inanimate carbon rod is serving an indefinite club suspension.

I'm sure that an option or two will come through in the nab challenge, but until then, he's a useful 122k place holder.
I think it's close enough to the start of the season to start putting rookies that you think will be playing Rd1?

Anyone can be an inanimate carbon rod, I think the problem here is Goddard has been popular, which breeds more popularity and people just picking him to follow the crowd, which then creates legitimate discussion about him as a viable rookie. Which I just don't see.

So who are your current defender rookies?

Compelling argument for starting with Goddard.

WhiteX D.McKenzie at the moment.

Have Karpany, Scharenberg, Edwards and even Brown on watchlist before Goddard.

Again, he's a first year key position prospect. Why he is somehow a certainty to play games?

He's not but is any rookie at this stage?

I am sure most people who had Goddard did so for the sake of placing a name in a box and that's it for now.

At this stage the names of the rookies aren't important, it's the allocation of costs that is important.
We'll all accommodate the good rookies when we know who they are. Until then having someone like Goddard is really saying "I'm spending under $125,000 on this position in my team, and Goddard fits the bill for now". Plus I think he'll play. :)

I really doubt WhiteX will get a game early in the season. They would want him to play a few games in Box Hill to gain confidence in the knee again.

I can't see Shaun Edwards getting consistent game time unless doomsday happens. Defence is pretty much locked in Dempsey/Baguley/Fletcher/Hooker/Hurley/Hibberd. He aint displacing any of those I can guarantee you. With the inclusion of Cooney/Chappy/Goddard etc, consistent gametime for unproven rookies is going to be almost non-existant. Bombers aren't looking to rebuild. Want to win as many games and have a crack at it. Hirdy doesn't have time on his side to run the gauntlet with youth.

Agree with you Edwards has very little chance to get a game in the rebounding defender role that he has mainly been played in. Simply too many ahead of him in the queue.

However a recent development might be that a move to the forward line could be on the cards? He played as a forward in the intra practice training last Friday and in Lloydy's recent video update he mentioned Edwards as one of the five players he has mainly been working with.

Still going to be difficult to get a game but as a forward it might be easier than as a back to squeeze in if the opportunity arises.

Who is? Isn't that the whole point of the discussion now, finding out who is the players we want as rookies? His name pops up everywhere. JockReynolds has him as #1 defensive rookie.

Analysing why it is strange that he is so popular as he's very unlikely to be playing, especially as a first year key position project is the whole point of this thread.

KPDs do sometime play, but they are usually only playing because of injury and are mature bodies (Georgiou, Clurey) with low JS. At this stage yes, all options should be explored, but so is asking the question why.

Reckon Nathan Brown is gonna end up being the most popular DEF rookie, pumping out his very job secure 40s ...

Seriously though, if it is a choice between a round 1 backline donut or a Brown 40 - I know which one I would pick...

I think a lot of coaches have just switched their brains off for now. They've picked the common current picks and mentally parked the whole issue until we see the NAB Cup. Some will stay switched off on rookies until the last 2 weeks. That's why Goddard is in so many teams. He'll stay popular until injured or until it becomes obvious he is not getting selected for R1.

Rookie ownership % change massively in the last 1-2 weeks before lockout.

Unfortunately, rightly or wrongly, the days of being able to discuss rookies this early on to get a head start on the masses are over. One week from R1 every SC advice site will have a rookie cheat sheet for everyone. Many will be lazy and do no more research than read those cheat sheets.

FWIW I think you make valid points on Goddard being a rookie KPF.

This really bugs me... Really miss the days of having to do your own research. It's too easy for people to copy and paste from these cheat sheets.

Having said that, those who do rely on the cheat sheets nearly always come unstuck with their poor trading.

Yep. These cheat sheets are fine, but if you don't have your own research you don't have your own context and you don't know who you are actually watching in the pre-season games.

I wouldn't take too much notice of any hype or popularity of any of the rookies at this stage... but yes, it's good to ask why.

Why is Hugh Goddard such a popular pick at the moment ? I believe it's because of the perceived opportunity he has at a weaker club, where defence has been precarious to say the least.

The fact that Gwilt is no longer there has created an opening. Goddard's cause is also helped by the ongoing injury problems StKilda have had with their defensive talls.
Gilbert has a foot injury compounded by heel problems, the club are taking a cautious approach and he won't be playing the early rounds.
Bruce is recovering from shin surgery and is on a modified program. In any case, he's been training with the forward group this preseason.
Simpkin only played five games last year with Richardson using him up forward in a defensive role. The knock was on his running power and he spent the last two months in the VFL. I'm not sure where he fits in at the moment.
Roberton, Dempster, Geary, Webster, Savage, Shenton and Wright are all medium/smalls and play different roles.
Which leaves just Fisher and Delaney.

I don't think it's too unreasonable to imagine the possibility of Goddard getting a gig. Not saying he absolutely will, but it's not the worst pick at this stage.

Yeah I agree. All fillers for the moment. I think everyone just plans with the popular rookies and changes once the round 1 teams are named.

There'll be a few who might have an ace up their sleeve on gut feel or maybe inside info but generally speaking, we'll all be starting with near identical rookies.

Not sure if it's been posted but I think Petracca's gone for the year. Could mean another rookie(s) gets an opportunity he may not have had Petracca been fit

James Harmes most likely. 123k mid.

I don't expect him to play seniors any time soon though.
