Bound to happen poor fella. Anyone else going to run with Waters/Ibbotson. Timely reminder about injury prone stars. In Supercoach Terms a shame that ruck divisions will become more generic.
Raise a good point there about injury prone players.

Naitanui is all but locked for me, but I'm a bit concerned with injuries (sorry don't want to jinx Nic Nat)

I wish all these players I'm avoiding would stop getting injured pre-season and save it for the real stuff.

Dons confident ankle injury won't stop key midfielder
Callum Twomey February 16, 2015 4:22 PM

AN ANKLE injury has sidelined Essendon's David Myers but the midfielder is expected to be back in training by the end of next week. The 25-year-old, who played 18 games last year, has joined a group of players on a modified program. However, the club expects the damaging left-footer to be out of action only in the short term, with Bombers doctor Bruce Reid saying Myers will likely return to full drills soon. "A week ago just in a drill someone fell across his ankle so that has put him out of action for this week," Reid said on the club's website. "We expect him to be running by the end of this week and back in full training by the end of next week.”

Of more concern to the Bombers will be the fitness of key tall Jake Carlisle, who has yet to join full training this pre-season while dealing with a persistent bout of patella tendinitis. Reid said the 23-year-old, who kicked 27 goals last year in 19 games but hit peak form in the second half of the season, was likely to rejoin the main group this week. "He had pretty severe patella tendinitis and it is the sort of injury that you can not get better during the season," Reid said. "We have taken our time but he has now ticked off top-end speed running and has joined in skills so we expect him to be fully back in soon. "We expect him fully back in so he gets a good six weeks training before the first game."

Essendon rookie Kurt Aylett looks set to be unavailable for the start of the season after tearing his hamstring, which will see him sidelined for another six weeks.

Wounded Kangaroos 'walking a fine line' ahead of round one
Travis King February 16, 2015 3:38 PM

BRAD Scott is concerned North Melbourne could be slow out of the blocks this season, as a host of Roos who had off-season surgery race against time to be match conditioned for round one. Drew Petrie, Ben Brown and Jack Ziebell have trickled back to game-sense training after the Christmas break, but Scott said the club was still walking a tightrope ahead of its season-opener against the Crows at Adelaide Oval on April 5. "I think that all teams are concerned about a lot of off-season surgery. But our guys have managed it extremely well," Scott said. "We’re ahead of where I thought we'd be in terms of player availability, but you can get sucked in sometimes by having a player medically cleared to play and their preparation hasn't been good enough. "We've still got some work to do, but I think the depth of the squad should give us a little bit more comfort. "But we know we're going to have to be at our best because we've got a pretty tough start to the year."

After the round-one contest against Adelaide, North Melbourne faces the Brisbane Lions, Port Adelaide, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond, Essendon, Fremantle, Collingwood, West Coast and the Sydney Swans in the early part of the year.

North's tall stocks have been hit especially hard since last season, with Petrie (ankle), Brown (knee), Robbie Tarrant (leg), Aaron Black (shoulder), Nathan Grima (foot), Scott Thompson (knee) and Majak Daw (foot) all missing big chunks of pre-season training. "They're all pretty much out on the track now. Lachie Hansen's (hips) not too far away and he's pretty much the last one," Scott said. "That being said, they're still behind, there's no doubt about that. We knew we'd walk a fine line and we're still walking a fine line. "We're hopeful, but we're working really hard at this stage of the year. We need everything to go right from this point on to get pretty close to our full strength side come round one."

Scott said North will use its NAB Challenge campaign, starting on March 1 against the Crows in Port Lincoln, to trial some new players – including recruits Jarrad Waite and Shaun Higgins. Draftees Sam Durdin and Daniel Nielsen are likely to see game time, although Scott said Ed Vickers-Willis was doubtful after an interrupted pre-season. Key defender Thompson (knee) will probably be "medically cleared" to play at Port Lincoln but might not be risked, however small forward Lindsay Thomas is desperate to play at his former hometown despite his battles with plantar fascia injury. "We won't be able to stop Lindsay playing round one," Scott said. "That's been a great carrot for him because he's had an injury-interrupted pre-season, but he's trained well the last few weeks."

Meanwhile, the Roos will give Sam Wright and Robin Nahas light weeks on the track after both copped heavy hits to the torso at training last Friday. "They will both be fine. (It was) fairly minor," Scott said. "They've had reasonable preparations, Sam in particular. So we'll wrap them up in the next week or so and roll them out for NAB (match) one."

Also a timely reminder to think about ruck protection at kick off. Looking at you Ryder, Lycett and Bellchambers

Tim Gossage on 10 News reporting that Beau Waters has played his last game for the Eagles and will retire this week due to his shoulder.

Pretty sad if true... Beau is a great player and adds so much to this club... And he is a terrific bloke & clubman. Big loss for the Eagles and the AFL.

Huge loss and such wretched bad luck and dispiriting it must be for him. I loved watching him play.

Sam Durdin may benefit from this. S.Thompson(knee), R.Tarrant(leg) and L.Hansen(hip) are behind in their preparation. And now Grima(back) out for three months.
However J.Tippett must also be pushing Durdin for a spot.

Grim start for Grima: Roo sidelined for three months
Mitch Cleary February 17, 2015 6:24 PM

NORTH Melbourne defender Nathan Grima's injury woes have continued into 2015, with another back injury to sideline him for more than three months.
The 29-year-old is scheduled to have an operation to repair a disc on Wednesday.
North Melbourne director of football Geoff Walsh confirmed the setback.
"The docs have had a round-table conference on this, and it's been decided there will be surgery," Walsh said.
"It hadn't been responding to the conservative treatments.
"He'll be sidelined for 12 to 14 weeks, that is the estimate."
Grima, who made his debut in 2009 and has played 86 matches for the Roos, has long battled back problems and also had trouble with his foot in 2014.

To be honest I think he knew the writing was on the wall. It will be no shock to him.
Last year there were a few whispers he should not be playing footy any more and most others would have retired straight away with issues he had. Guess his love for the game wanted him to leave no stone unturned until he was convinced beyond any doubt at all it was all over. Guess it did him no harm to at least try to get through a pre-season but he knew odds stacked against him many many months ago.
Good luck to him. Played footy in wonderful style and spirit. One of my favourite Eagles players even though I do not follow them and rarely saw him live. Big loss to their club but I'm sure he will find some way of still being part of their club in future.

Jeez we're not having much luck with injuries this pre season.

I really hope Tippet plays, could be the gorilla defender we've been waiting for.

Durdin has about a 1 % chance of playing round 1 I'd say. Will be several years before he plays regularly.

Tarrant would be next in line after Tippet, but he's had an injury too!

Deledio for me was a must this year, but his lingering achilles soreness concerns me. He missed Rnds 3,4,5 and 6 last year with his achilles related injury, ankle.

Brett Deledio is expected to be fit for AFL season despite ongoing Achilles soreness
Jon Ralph Herald Sun

RICHMOND has allayed concerns about Brett Deledio’s lingering Achilles soreness, confident it will not delay his start to the season proper.

The 27-year-old missed a month early in 2014 with the problem but returned to put together one of his best seasons for the Tigers.
The issue flared again pre-Christmas and while he has been carefully managed Tigers football boss Dan Richardson says he is now pain-free.
The Tigers this week locked in Dustin Martin until 2017, with Richardson confident the club will sign free agent Alex Rance at some stage in the coming season.

They take on the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval next week and will likely play a younger side, but Deledio will play some NAB Challenge games.

“When he is training, he is fine,’’ Richardson said.
“There are no symptoms at all, it is just a management and maintenance issue. He will be right to play NAB Challenge. We feel we have got control of it and are confident it won’t be a problem.”
Richmond have almost a clean bill of health, with Reece Conca back in full training after knee soreness but rookie Matt Thomas held back after post-season knee surgery.

Ruckman Ivan Maric hasn’t missed a beat after surgery for ankle bone spurs forced a late start to 2014, with Chris Knights (knee) also fully fit.
Like many clubs they are in a holding period, anxious for game time but eager to avoid injuries after a horror week for Melbourne’s Christian Petracca and Carlton’s Matthew Kreuzer.

I had him locked in as well until last week when I heard about his lingering achilles issues. Not interested at all anymore.

So for those of you that are dropping Lids on the basis he may be an injury risk, do you have Martin in your Fwd line? As many coaches seem to have both, the following quote from the original Premium Fwd thread struck a chord with me. Are you risking getting shot twice with the same bullet given Dusty's scores?

Indeed, Dusty only managed 84, 94, 80 and 61 without Deledio from rounds 3-6. One of the best things about both Deledio and Martin though, is that they are very durable. 2014 was the first time since 2007 (6 straight seasons) that Deledio missed a game, which is freakish and Dusty has only missed 4 games in 5 seasons.

The "back-up" plan for me is that if Lids is truly sore - I'd love to have Buddy in my team from Round 1.

Dons downplay Zaka knee injury
Ben Guthrie February 20, 2015 11:44 AM

A KNEE injury to star Bomber David Zaharakis has sent a scare through the Essendon camp. But the Bombers later downplayed the injury, saying Zaharakis only sustained a minor tweak to his right knee. Despite the injury appearing serious, Essendon told AFL.com.au the star midfielder should be fit to train on Monday.

Youngster Will Hams was another casualty during an intense practice match on Friday morning, succumbing to an ankle injury. Zaharakis went down clutching his right knee after falling awkwardly in a tackle laid by one of Essendon's potential VFL top-up players, Anthony Tipungwuti. The midfielder was carted off the ground alongside club doctor Bruce Reid and went into the rooms to receive treatment. He was later seen with ice on his knee.

Hams also left the track in a cart before gingerly hobbling towards the changerooms with medical staff. AFL.com.au has asked the club for more details on the Hams' injury.

Nippy forward Travis Colyer was the clear standout in the practice match, where his speed and improved kicking were on show, Jackson Merrett was prominent on a wing, Brendon Goddard's ball use was first rate, and former Crow Shaun McKernan's strength up forward was noticeable.

Jobe Watson, Jake Carlisle, David Myers, Michael Hurley and Adam Cooney were among the players not participating in the practice game.

For those worried about Deledio

Richmond’s players endured their most serious match-play hitout of the pre-season so far at the ME Bank Centre today.

The Tigers took part in a game run over three periods, eight days before the Club’s opening Pre-season Challenge match against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, February 28.

Richmond players have ramped up their match-practice work in the last six weeks, as they continue their preparations for the home-and-away season.

Tigers’ spearhead Jack Riewoldt was a standout in the forward half, booting five goals, while developing key position prospect Liam McBean kicked three majors.

Brett Deledio and Shaun Grigg each kicked two goals, along with Richmond rookie Kane Lambert and VFL newcomer Jake Aarts.

Deledio, who has been managing Achilles soreness, completed the session and was untroubled, along with Reece Conca, who has been on the comeback from a knee injury.

Dustin Martin, who this week signed a two-year contract extension, was dominant through the midfield.

Pleasingly for the Club, the players emerged unscathed from the match on the injury front.
