Knee tendinitis has slowed Isaac Heeney's pre-season training

Heeney 'just wants to play', says father
He's just one of our 44 players now
John Longmire on Isaac Heeney
SYDNEY SWANS academy recruit Lloyd Perris has undergone another round of surgery on his troublesome left knee and will be sidelined for 10 weeks after a training mishap last week.

Perris, who spent three years in the Swans' Academy before earning a spot on the rookie list at the end of 2013, damaged meniscus cartilage on the knee he had LARS Surgery on halfway through last year.

While the Swans have a relatively healthy list heading into the NAB Challenge, the club has also been forced to hold back prized youngster Isaac Heeney with knee tendinitis.

While Heeney has been able to build his workload in recent weeks and could play pre-season games, Perris will likely be unavailable until early May.

Franklin v Parker: the Swans' most important

"Lloyd hurt his knee slightly before Christmas and thought it was OK, but he tweaked it a little bit last week," coach John Longmire told AFL.com.au.

"He went and had it operated on today and it was a successful operation.

"It was repaired, which was a good thing, but it will be about 10 weeks [on the sidelines]."

Perris had only resumed full training this week after a long period of rehabilitation, and the setback will delay his ambitions of pushing for a senior debut this year.

Longmire, however, said the 20-year-old was well equipped to rebound from the disappointment.

"He's clearly disappointed that he's had to go and have another operation, but he's a pretty resilient kid," the coach said.

"He's determined and he attacks his rehab with enormous vigour and effort, and he knows he gives it his best.

"He knows what's in front of him and I'm sure he'll do a good job when he gets himself back.

"Having it done now means he's still got the majority of the season to perform."

Heeney, who was recruited as a 'steal' from the Swans' academy with pick No.18 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, has been monitored closely this summer because of knee tendinitis.

The complaint kept him out of last year's draft combine, but Longmire was confident the 18-year-old would be able to show his ability after gradually increasing his program over the pre-season.

"He's been building up to the point now where he's playing games, and he's doing really well," Longmire said.

"There's been a fair bit talked about him I guess, and he's certainly been used to push different arguments over the journey.

"But he's just one of our 44 players now, and we've got to make sure we develop him as we do others.

"I do like what I've seen so far, but it's only early days."

Injury blow for key Blues Andrew Walker and Marc Murphy on eve of NAB Challenge
Nick Bowen February 24, 2015 4:49 PM

CARLTON has suffered a double blow ahead of the NAB Challenge with defender Andrew Walker forced to undergo more surgery on his troublesome knee and skipper Marc Murphy ruled out for the next three weeks with a calf strain. Murphy strained his calf in the Blues' intra-club game last Friday and has been ruled out of their opening NAB Challenge campaign game West Coast in Mandurah on Friday night. But Carlton is hopeful the midfielder will be fit to play in its remaining two pre-season games against Collingwood in Bendigo on March 15 and Geelong at Etihad Stadium on March 22.

However, Walker looks set to play no part in those pre-season games after recently undergoing his third bout of surgery on the same knee since July last year. Nonetheless, Carlton football manager Andrew McKay said Walker remained some chance of playing in the Blues' round one clash against Richmond on April 2. "It's unfortunate that Andrew's had another setback with his knee, however we are looking forward to him returning to full training soon and he remains in contention for round one," McKay said on Tuesday. "Andrew was progressing well in his recovery, but last week pinched his meniscus while training. "We're confident this procedure will have him back to his best and he will play an important role for us this year."

Murphy experienced calf tightness during the Blues intra-club match, with scans later revealing he had suffered a calf strain that was expected to sideline him for two to three weeks. "Although this is unfortunate, Marc will still be able to take part in the final two NAB Challenge games to enable him to be fully fit for round one against Richmond," McKay said.

Walker had knee surgery in July last year after managing lingering soreness for much of 2014's first 17 rounds, then had further surgery before Christmas when his rehabilitation program stalled. Walker had hoped to play in the Blues' final NAB Challenge game when he spoke to AFL.com.au last week, but his latest setback means he will enter the 2015 season on a severely limited preparation.

Just remember to take that AFL injury list as more of a guideline rather than a definitive and accurate list. Firstly most Clubs are not too forth coming about injuries and secondly the compilers of the list don't have the time or need to make it perfect.

An example is Bernie, from Weekend at Bernie's fame, has probably spent more time and looked more alive in the main training group at the EFC this summer than Tayte Pears, yet Pears is not even on that list.

Found something concerning NAB Round 1 -

A notable absentee is ruckman Nic Naitanui who has a minor back injury and the match committee has decided against taking any risks at this early stage of the pre-season build-up. He has been impressive right through the pre-season, but will be held out of this game as a precaution.

I think the must have preseason rule is interpreted as .......must have preseason to have full fitness.........Ablett is ahead of his normal fitness levels........the shoulder is untried, surviving one NAB cup game is all it should take to lock him in.

From the NAB thread -

A bit more info on NicNat and Duggan

Nic Naitanui out but Eagles say not for long
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-02-26/nic-nat-not-far-away

NIC NAITANUI has been held out of Friday night's NAB Challenge due to back soreness, but the West Coast hierarchy believe the injury is only minor.

Naitanui was not named in the Eagles’ squad to face Carlton on Wednesday and the star ruckman was restricted to light duties at training on Thursday.

A fortnight ago Naitanui said he was keen to play as many games as possible in the pre-season after enjoying one of his best summers in recent years.

Check all the pre-season injury news here

He was in-line to play in the Indigenous All Stars game last Friday night but did not play, and Eagles assistant coach Don Pyke said the decision to rest Naitanui again this week was precautionary.

"He's a bit stiff in the back," Pyke said.

"He's such a valuable player to us. We're five weeks out from the season. We're hopeful it's a minor setback and he'll be fine for the next game. It's precaution more than anything.

"He was a little bit disappointed when he found out he wasn't going to be playing because he's done a lot of work this pre-season and is in really good shape."

Pyke said Naitanui would have been borderline to play if it was round one this week, but the Eagles have a no risk policy for the NAB Challenge.

Scott Selwood has returned to full training after his ankle surgery in December and is on track to play later in the NAB Challenge.

Jack Darling remains a major concern for West Coast. The 22-year-old was not sighted at training on Monday or Thursday.

Senior coach Adam Simpson effectively ruled him out of the entire NAB Challenge and round one last week, and it is possible Darling could miss a number of games early in the home and away season as he continues his battle with a stress injury in his foot.

"He's been slower than we probably hoped," Pyke said.

"But he's making progress. From what I've heard he's likely to not be available early in the season, but we'll take it from there."

New draftees Tom Lamb and Jackson Nelson will get another chance to impress after both played cameo roles in last Friday night's win over the Indigenous All Stars.

The Eagles first-round draft pick Liam Duggan has suffered a minor ankle injury but he is working his way back to full fitness via a tailored running program.

Friday night's clash against Carlton at Rushton Park in Mandurah is a sell-out.

YOUNG Adelaide midfielder Rory Atkins will be sidelined for up to three months after suffering a knee injury at training on Friday.

Atkins, 20, damaged the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will wear a brace for several weeks.

The talented Victorian is yet to play an AFL game since being drafted ahead of the 2013 season and the injury is a blow as he was tipped to push for selection this season.

Crows head of football David Noble said Atkins had enjoyed a good pre-season.

“Rory has relished the hard work put in front of him and I am sure he will apply that same attitude to his rehabilitation,” Noble said.

Atkins was recruited with pick No. 81 in the 2012 AFL National Draft. A talented left-footer, he was considered one of the sliders in the that draft after some clubs steered clear of him following his expulsion from the AFL-AIS program because of work ethic issues.

He enjoyed a solid 2014 and was twice selected as an emergency.

He averaged 19 disposals in the Crows state league side last year where he finished sixth in the best and fairest.
