Eagles coach Adam Simpson 'fears the worst' for Eric Mackenzie after knee injury

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-02-27/we-fear-the-worst-simpson

WEST Coast fears the worst for Eric Mackenzie’s season after the reigning best and fairest suffered a knee injury in the second term of the Eagles' NAB Challenge match against Carlton at Rushton Park in Mandurah.

Mackenzie was involved in a marking contest with Carlton's Levi Casboult on the wing. There appeared to be minimal contact between the pair but Mackenzie's right knee twisted slightly and he fell to ground in pain.

He remained on the ground as physios and trainers surrounded him.

Mackenzie got to his feet and limped off without too much assistance and even broke into a jog as he neared the bench.

The physios conducted a stability test on his knee on the bench before Mackenzie limped to the rooms unassisted with two trainers.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said the club would know more after Mackenzie has scans on Saturday to assess the damage but he fears the defender has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

"It's not great," Simpson said post-match.

"He left at half-time so I haven’t had a chance to talk to him but we fear the worst.

"You have your heart in your mouth when you go through these things and you just hope for the best.

"We all know he's an important player for us but we will park that for the moment and just get around him and see how he is tomorrow.

"We still don't know and there is still a small chance it might not be an ACL."

It soured a positive night for the Eagles. Simpson was pleased with his side's 31-point won over the Blues although he was a little frustrated by the Eagles' inaccuracy in front of goal. They kicked just 10 goals from 25 opportunities

"Unfortunately we didn't finish off our work and we had 25 scoring shots, but we came and did what we needed to do," Simpson said.

"Probably the most pleasing thing was that we were nice and organised and controlled with some of the things we went into the game with."

Mackenzie's injury adds to some lingering concerns for West Coast. Jack Darling is unlikely to be available for round one, and possibly more games beyond that, as he continues his slow rehabilitation from a foot stress fracture.

Nic Naitanui was held out of the game against Carlton due to a back complaint and Simpson said he is no guarantee to return for the Eagles' next NAB Challenge against Port Adelaide at Norwood Oval on March 8.

"We're hoping, it'll be touch and go," Simpson said.

"We don't want to force the issue but we want to get some games (into him) as well. The pleasing thing that he's done is he's had a really good (run) during the pre-season. It's not like we're trying to cram in some work. He's done a lot of minutes, so now it's probably getting match fit."

Scott Selwood returned to the training track this week following ankle surgery in December. He appears to be pushing to play in one of the next two NAB Challenge matches but Simpson said they would not rush him back.

"We're just going to take that one pretty slow," Simpson said.

"He trained this week.

"If we can get him through another week of training and he might sneak in a last NAB Challenge match, but we're pretty patient with his return."

Worst possible news for E-Mac... Out for the season. Terrible start to 2015 for the Eagles. Hate to see players get cut down in their prime like this.

ACL for Ezy

http://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/2015-02-28/acl-for-ezy

Scans today have confirmed that key West Coast Eagles defender Eric Mackenzie ruptured his right anterior cruciate ligament in the game against Carlton at Rushton Park last night.

Mackenzie, the 2014 John Worsfold medallist, landed awkwardly after a contest in the second quarter and hobbled from the ground.

He will wait for swelling in the knee to subside this week before having surgery.

Mackenzie has played 71 of the last 75 games the club has played and in that time, has emerged as one of the premier key defenders in the game.

He was unlucky to miss all-Australian selection last year and edged out Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis for the club best and fairest award.

The 26-year-old Mackenzie, who was one of the senior players rotated through the captaincy last season, has played 121 games and has been rock solid down back.

Who could be forced into getting more midfield time if he is out for an extended period?

Dahlhaus?
Possibly Bont?
The other side of that coin is, we all assumed Libba would get tagged in the great majority of games, with Griffen gone. Who now gets the tag? My guess would be Macrae, as he's an outside receiver, and they're generally easier to tag than the inside tough nuts.

Rowsus - do you think there is any upside for Dahlhas here?

Losing your #1 inside mid for your club, let alone probably the #1 for the comp will hurt big time. Maybe Mitch Wallis is released from tagging as he has shown he can win the inside ball. I think they'll need Dahlaus and Bonts playing their usual role to ensure they can kick enough goals to be competitive. Maybe Jong comes into a tagging role releasing Wallis.

Bont's is too valuable IMO to be sitting at the bottom of packs feeding the ball out.

He's more outside - but could come in if they can cover that inside role with someone already established in the team. Their biggest worry will be finding an inside ball winner.

Bonts and dahlhas you'd think
The best player they have to fill Libba's role is M Boyd, so then you start to shuffle from there, as in who fills Boyd's role? My guess is that then becomes shared, amongst the likes of Dahlhaus, Bont's etc. There are probably 4 or 5 that cut that pie up, and those players may have been playing anywhere from 10-40% of on-ball time anyway. It just means they may now be playing 20-65% of on-ball time.

I think Wallis will be the one to benefit. He fell out of favour a bit last year, so has a lot to prove this year. He played really well today so hopefully is released from tagging duties. I read somewhere that he was given tagging duties previously so he could improve the defensive part of his game, and that he is in the mix for more midfield time this year.

Dahl was always going to get more midfield time as he built up his tank. I'm hoping the likes of Hunter and Hrovat can improve enough to pick up a bit of Dahl's role as small forwards. The trouble is that Dahl is very dangerous around goal so we still need him to play that role to some degree.

Got no idea about the dynamics and West Coast. Could this in anyway affect Ellis? I am naively considering him.
