Greg Broughton, now a Gold Coast player with his move from Fremantle may now have a new sense of SuperCoach life. However, will this new SuperCoach life mean Broughton is in your team?
Name - Greg Broughton (GCS)
Position - DEF / FWD
Price - $441,900
Average - 82.6(15), 92.6(21), 98.6(15), 98.7(15)
Draw - STK, SYD, BRL, PORT, GWS, FRE, MEL, RIC, HAW, GEE, NTH, ESS, BYE
REASONS FOR GREG BROUGHTON
Prior to last year, when Ross Lyon became the Fremantle Head Coach, Broughton averaged in the 90s in his previous three years. Interestingly, Broughton's best SuperCoach year (98.7) was in his rookie year. There have been lots of media attention (well at least in the fantasy world) that Ross Lyon was not really a fan of Broughton and as a consequence Broughton was played out of position at Fremantle in 2012. Either way the past is the past and now Broughton is at Gold Coast.
The first reason to pick Broughton is that arguably Broughton is under-priced and if you ignore 2012, which I believe Broughton was Ross Lyon effected, then Broughton historical average is 97, but is priced at 82.6.
Secondly, now that Broughton plays for Gold Coast, you would say he is a lock for every game in a young team. Furthermore, it is likely that Broughton will have some midfield time and/or half back line and won't be played out of position. I cannot see him playing in a lock-down mode, when the Gold Coast midfield, save for Gary Ablett, needs some help.
Thirdly, Broughton is categorised as a Dual Position Player as a Defender and Forward, which may come in handy, especially if you have Brent Staker and/or Nathan Bock in your SuperCoach team.
REASON AGAINST GREG BROUGHTON
I'll be honest and say that initially I didn't want Broughton in my SuperCoach team and I think it relates to his SuperCoach performance in 2012, which as aforementioned I believe was effected by Ross Lyon. While I know many people do not want our Collingwood Bad Boy, Heath Shaw, but for some reason I prefer Shaw over Broughton. It may be a Brand Name issue, but I don't think so.
Based on the poll in the Goddard, Gibbs and Rockliff article, where currently 80% believe Goddard and Gibbs are locks, we can assume that most teams will have Goddard and Gibbs, which leaves 4 onfield spots in the Defence. Probably 2-3 of these onfield spots will be rookies / mid-pricers and thus Broughton will be fighting for these onfield positions against Duffield, Waters, Grimes, Adcock, Birchall and Heath Shaw.
My heart says No, but my brain says Yes. For now, Broughton is a Watch and it's a difficult decision until we watch a few Gold Coast games in the pre-season games.
