I thought I'd clarify the scoring system to the best of my ability as a lot of people are using the outdated numbers present on the SuperCoach website and wondering where some scores have come from. Before I get asked, I've watched a lot of live scoring this season and I'm purely basing it off what I've seen happening. The numbers below are going to be from when a game is in a neutral position (the game is neither on the line or in a blowout). So here we go:

KICKS

Ineffective: 0
Backwards and effective: 1
Long (40+ metres) to a contest: 2
Short and effective: 3
Long to advantage (effective): 5
Clanger (unforced error): -3

NOTE: A kick to a contest less than 40 metres in distance is deemed ineffective.

HANDBALLS

Ineffective: 0
Effective: 1

MARKS

From teammate, uncontested: 1
From teammate, contested: 3
From teammate, contested inside 50: 4
From teammate, on lead: 3
From opposition, uncontested: 3
From opposition, contested: 6

FREE KICKS

Free for: 3 (counts as a contested possession)
Free against, in a contested situation: -1
Free against, in an uncontested situation: -3
Give away a 50 meter penalty: -5

HITOUTS

To advantage: 5
To disadvantage (sharked by opposition): -1
Gather from ruck contest: 2

TACKLES: 3

GOAL: 6* (can vary dramatically depending on closeness of the match)

HANDBALL RECEIVE: 1

HARD OR LOOSE BALL GET: 3

SPOIL, SHEPHERD OR SMOTHER: 1

SPOIL GAINING POSSESSION: 3

SCORE ASSIST: 3

CONTESTED KNOCK ON TO ADVANTAGE: 4

BOUNCE: 1

Like it mate.

Iv'e noticed that the free kicks and 50s against have the biggest discrepancy of any stat. There are many times players lose multiple points for frees against and sometimes they don't lose any and the same applies with 50ms against. I remember reading somewhere that it depends in what area of the ground the free occurs but I haven't noticed any pattern emerge.

The hit outs to advantage also vary from 3-5 depending on god knows what.

I'm tending to think that frees against which take place in the forward and defensive 50 are marked harsher than frees against that happen in the middle of the ground.

Hitouts to advantage is the only area where I have no idea what's really going on. Just thought I'd play it save and go with what Champion Data themselves have said will happen, but I've definitely seen a lot that have only added 3 or 4 as well. Almost seems like a lottery to be honest.

I assume those stats are for when scaled. At the end of the day I simply look at the end scores as the real CD scores. The live scores might be nice to look but we simply do not know enough about game situation weighting and all the many other stats counted in the scores that SC site itself does not mention that actually do go into making up the final score for each player. They show the main ones as you thankfully highlighted but there is so much more. We are probably dealing with 60% of info at best. CD control their own system. SC just go along for ride and use if for the fantasy game. Some people tend to forget that.

Contested marks are much rarer and should be worth more than a mark on the lead. Should be 5 / 3 imo.

BUMP...

- Kicks long to advantage (effective) are worth 5 points and when coupled with a 3 point hard ball get, result in 8 points - "how has this bloke got 8 points per disposal?! Pfft, CD favouritism again..." (let's call this, the Marcus Bontempelli rule)

- A spoil gaining possession is worth 3 points - "DT 2, SC 20... okay Champion Data, time to take back the golden ticket..." (this one can be the Alex Rance rule)

- A contested knock on to advantage is worth 4 points (this one I like to call the pre-2017 Cyril Rioli rule)

- A kick to a contest less than 40 metres in distance is deemed ineffective (ahhh, the infamous Adam Treloar of rounds 1-4 rule)

Rationale of a contested mark equalling a mark on lead is that a mark on lead probably starts with a contested situation where the forward pushes of the defender. Agree, there should me more of a difference, maybe 3:2.

A couple of days back I clicked on a video on Carlton site to have a look at some of our reserves team play.
Much to my horror I could not put up with the "commentary" for more than 10 minutes before clicking off.
Whilst I was watching the vision and listening I suspect the audio feed I was hearing was actually Champion Data caller for their team of stats people. I would hate that job, talk about a mood killer of watching footy itself.
You can hear a bit here and see if you think it is CD at work.
