James Hird in a bicycle accident today, suffered a concussion.

Club Statement:

Essendon Senior Coach James Hird suffered a heavy fall from his bicycle while riding home from training this afternoon.

Club Doctor Bruce Reid said James was taken by ambulance to Hospital for assessment.

“James was very fortunate he was wearing a helmet which has braced his fall,” Reid said.

“He has suffered severe concussion however X-rays have cleared him of any fractures.”

“James will remain in hospital for ongoing observation and following a review we hope he will be discharged soon.”

The Club will provide a further update tomorrow.

Hopefully someone out there will be able to dig up this unique record;

Which player holds the record for consecutive games where they kicked at least one goal per game from their debut game onwards?

Jesse Hogan is currently on 12 consecutive games so I'm wondering whether any other player has ever done better?

John Coleman kicked a goal in each of his first 64 matches. In fact his 65th match against Fitzroy was the only one of his 98 matches that he didn't kick a goal.

There may be someone with a longer streak, I just knew about Coleman being a Bomber fan.

Wow. That is an incredible stat!

Good luck to young Jesse but I would have to say the odds are against him!

Further I tried to do a little digging to see what happened in that Fitzroy match, my John Coleman book didn't mention it, however google provided that Fitzroy Fullback Vic Chanter was the man to keep him goalless. Coleman had some revenge though, in his two games against Fitzroy after that day he kicked 10 goals and 14 goals.

In that match against Fitzroy, Essendon only scored a total of 5.8 for the game with Bill Hutchinson scoring 3 and John Gill & Lance Mann both snagging a goal each. Incredibly, that was the only goalless game by Coleman in his 98 games total...what could have been.

I did a little bit more digging and came up with who I think is second on that list. Peter Hudson kicked goals in 126 of his 129 games, in sequences of 42, 61, 12 and 11.

Upon his debut game against CAR in round 2 of 1967 where he kicked 4.1, he went on to score at least a goal for 42 consecutive games, amassing a total of 224 goals at an average of 5.33 goals a game. His streak was broken against RIC in round 7 of 1969 where he could only register 0.3 for the game. Amazingly, after this round, he went on to score goals in the next 61 consecutive games (393 total at an average of 6.44). He could have had the all time record at 104 consecutive games if he converted one of those three behinds into a goal!

Third on that list I think is Lindsay White (Geelong & South Melbourne) who had 22 consecutive games upon debut which he scored at least a goal. He debut for Geelong against North Melbourne in round 1 of 1941 where he managed 3 goals. He continued to scored at least a goal in each game until round 6 of 1942 against Fitzroy (again!) when he was suiting up for South Melbourne. As with the previous two players, he also recorded another 18 consecutive games in which he kicked a minimum of a goal after the streak was broken.

Edit:

Just spotted a player who went dam close to J Coleman and another who had quite a decent streak.

George Moloney who played for Geelong between 1931-1935, played a total of 88 games for 303 goals. More importantly, he kicked at least a goal in each of his first 60 matches! He debut in round 1 of 1931 against COLL where he kicked 7 goals and the streak ended in his 61st match in round 6 of 1934 against ESS where he was kept goalless.

Jack Moriarty (Essendon & Fitzroy, 1922-33)
Played a total of 170 games for a total of 662 goals, only 5 goalless matches.
Went for 29 consecutive games scoring at least a goal after his debut game and was goalless in his 30th match. He then proceed to kick at least a goal from his 31st to 108th match!

George Margitich (Melbourne, 1930-34)
75 games for a total of 267 goals. Kicked at least a goal in his first 29 matches.

In addition to my post above, I may have found the record holder for consecutive games for kicking at least a goal from their debut game...and it's a beauty!

Mark Jackson (Melbourne, St Kilda & Geelong, 1981-1986)
82 games for a total of 308 goals.
His only goalless game of his career came in his 80th match against RIC in round 21 of 1985, giving him 79 consecutive games!

Here's an interesting little snippet

Paul Salmon and Robert Harvey are joint record holders for the number of different grounds played at with 19 venues.
They played 324 and 383 games respectively.

In a relatively shorter career Bomber Thompson managed to play at 17 different grounds across his 202 games.
Conversely, Alan Didak only managed to play at 6 different grounds across his 218 games.
When you think about it, that is quite extraordinary for someone to play 200+ at only 6 grounds!

Collingwood don't play at small grounds, they keep the AFL afloat!

Quite true. Collingwood are given the saloon passage.
It should be noted, that T Shaw played at 17 venues in his 313 games, and Irishman M Clarke has already played at 7 venues in his 73 games.

I would like to make a full and unreserved apology to Dayne Zorko the Magnificent.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry I didn't trust you. I'm sorry that I let my feelings get in the way of picking you up - but it wasn't that I didn't love you, no, I thought that my love was foolhardy, and that by overriding my heart's desire, I was making the better, stronger choice.

I was wrong.

You were priced at $408, 500, a bargain for such wizardry. You came off a 91 and a 93, you, in your infinite wisdom, were showing me that you had what it took, whilst remaining affordable for weeks. But I had little faith, and instead picked a man, who, for $96, 200 more, gave me scores of 57, 65, 121 and 73. That man's name was Shane Edwards, and this week he made way for the Little Master.

Of course, I saw my error by the first week, but I tried to rationalize my folly. "Sure," I told myself. "It's a decent score, but he's just as likely to drop in a 40." You scored 119. "Yeah, but what happens when you face Fremantle. Let's face it, you'd be lucky to score a half century." 124. And now, after another 124 and a 145, Dayne, you are out of reach.

And you stay that way, you glorious man.

Don't hold me to this, but I have two mates over in the UK atm, who went to the first day of The Ashes in Cardiff.

Anyway, my mate just told me that they ran into Patty Dangerfield's dad over there, and subsequently asked him the BIG question.

He told them that there was no way Danger would be leaving at the Crows.
He also said that he was considering going to Geelong, but after the passing of Phil Walsh had decided that he was definitely going to stay.

Now read into that what you will, I'm just passing on to the SCS community what a couple of mates heard over in the UK. hahahahahaha :D

Was hoping Treloar was coming to Moorabbin.
Plenty more fish in the sea for the Saints over the next few years.
