This is my team thus far. Most Rookies are place-holders but the structures should stay the same going forward. 418K in the bank.

To explain a few more of the 'unique' picks:
*McGovern - I believe he will be better than Yeo. Last year was his second year and still performed despite the dreaded 'second year blues'.
*Viney - Picked him over Wines, love the way he goes about it and love his tackling numbers. A touch riskier than Wines and less proven history but a POD if nothing else
*Blicavs - This is iffy. He is a gun, proved it last year but with the new rucks going down to Geelong, what will his role be next year. Will wait and see what happens in the NAB cup, but could easily be one of my best/worst picks for the year.
*Gunston - Soild last year, if he can keep his averages up around 95 will be a set and forget. No Roughead though will mean he might get the number one defender, but should be quick enough to keep them at bay.
*Harvey - Will need to play a lot of games if he is to break the games record, so should be on the park most weeks. His history tends to say that he will play and he does average well. It was either him or Buddy at this spot and could easily switch as the season starts proper.
A bit too unique for my liking. I think it's ok to have a unique pick here and there but I just think you have too many and you'll fall behind the pack with this team.

Any reason for no Pendles, Ablett or Libba?

My Team:
Defenders: B. Houli (92), D. Robertson (91), S. Docherty (95), J. Bartel (82), M. Broadbent (95), M. Brown (74), (B. Smedts (38), B. Whitecross (42))
Midfielders: P. Dangerfield (114), M. Priddis (116), S. Mitchell (108), M. Barlow (87), T. Liberatore (66), R. Crowley (38), J. Cunico (23), P. Ahern (23), (D. Cunningham (23), B. Keays (22), J. Dunkely (22))
Ruck: T. Goldstein (129), J. Ceglar (81), (M. Korcheck (19))
Forwards: D. Martin (86), L. Dahlhaus (102), J. Gungston (96), J. Simpkin (41), L. McCarthy (26), C. Petracca (23), (S. Kerridge (22), W. Buzza (22))

Notes about my Team:
*First Season that I've played SC in a long while (4+ years)
*My Team is not optimised for Byes at all, there is big gaps where I am least one player short every round after bringing in emergencies
*My Spend is $9,999,600 ($400 left over), I believe this money could be better spent, some suggestions would be great. I feel as if I've spent to big on defenders who don't return the same as midfielders would
*My Projected Round 1 Score is 1,817. Is this great? average? bad? I know scores of 2,000+ are (were?) considered to be good, so I'm not sure how far off I am.
Hi Zac, welcome to the site and welcome back to the wonderful world of supercoach.

DEF:
Bartel solid. Houli a nice unique pick, just be mindful that he has just had his best SC year so his efforts to repeat that will be tough. Docherty I really like this choice and another unique pick, his upward progression in averages looks good. And another unique pick in Broadbent, could pay off with Port's early draw. Roberton yet again another unique pick. Waste of cash having high priced rookies in Smedts and Whitecross, would look to get a few basement priced rookies during nab.

MID:
First off, get rid of creepy crowley! At his price he will average 65 at best and I don't think he will make you enough cash with his tagging roles. Barlow is best to be picked in ur fwd line. Everyone will have Libba so all good. Priddis is consistent and will get you 110 week in week out... and a great POD. Sam Mitchell however will miss games and being a hawk his scores may be unpredictable depending on Clarko's plan for him. Danger a superstar.

RUC:
Goldstein superstar. As a hawks fan, I don't think Ceglar will score you enough points to be an R2 keeper, I would look elsewhere.

FWD:
Dusty & Dahl guns. Gunston is a risky choice with the current injury to Roughead, he will get the number 1 defender from now on. His scores while Roughead is out is very low. Simpkin could be a nice pick in a very decimated bombers line up. Mccarthy to Kerridge me thinks.

Overall:
I feel your midfield is quite weak. While Danger is your obvious Captain candidate, I don't see Priddis scoring many of those huge scores to be a 2nd option for captain. Might you consider getting in one of GAJ/Pendles? Also switch Barlow to ur fwd line and swap Gunston for someone else. I concur that the backline has too much cash there. Bartel is lock... while the other 4 represent good value and are PODs, they seem have a bit of uncertainty about them. I'm fairly confident that not all of them will end up being good picks. You may want to chop one of the other 4 to help your mids.
With byes very late this year, I wouldn't worry too much about them, but keep an eye on it close to the the bye rounds. Don't pay too much attention to projected scores on the SC Gold thing, they don't account for rookies. Hope this helps you.

Hi Spudster,

McGovern - I still see him being used as a fwd/back swingman... with this I believe his scores will be up and down. If your a fan of rollercoasters, this is the ride you gotta jump on! However I would look elsewhere for more stability.

Viney - I like this pick, just hope he can stay on the park for you.

Blicavs - I think he is an absolute beast and is a great POD.

Gunston - I myself had Gunston locked into my team... until the news of Roughy being our for half the year. Like you said with Roughy out, he'll get the number 1 defender. Here's a sample of how he goes without Roughy in the team.

.... and to think, it was only 12 hours ago I took Roughie out of my team, and put Gunston in!

Here is Gunston without Roughie

2015 Gunston was 22 games at 96.6
2015, Rnd 15 - 61 vs Fremantle
2015, Rnd 14 - 86 vs Collingwood

2014 Gunston was 20 games at 90.4
2014, Rnd 21 - 51 vs Fremantle
2014, Rnd 10 - 87 vs Port Adelaide.

Small sample pool, and 2 Fremantle games, but it doesn't inspire confidence. I will be looking for someone to replace Gunston now. :(
Rowsus explains it best. So personally I would go with your Buddy option.

So I agree with 2/4 of your POD's.

Just with your midfield line, a lot of great POD's there too, however I feel like you are missing an Uber premium to help Rocky with your captain choices each week. Would try to somehow find cash to fit in one of Fyfe/Danger/GAJ/Pendles in there for one of JPK/Ward/Tmitch. The choice is yours, but IMO I would chop Ward out for one GAJ/Pendles.

Cheers Mate! big help, still learning the ropes, so it's great to get some insight! I picked crowley, because his price was $200k, and I thought for that price he'd be better than a rookie. Other than that, I need to move some cash from Defence to Midfield, as they score bigger.

Hi Zac, welcome to the site. There are a few things I would suggest (below), but first on the predicted score - ignore that. It includes Petracca and the like at 23, whereas your rookies should all do better than that. If you guesstimated their scores and adjusted for the extra points they will get you, that would get you a better estimate. Personally, I don't rate the predictions anyway, and they're only for one round in any case ... You don't want to pick players with a high projection in round one that drop off a lot after that! :p

In terms of your side:

- There's a mix of good and quite risky pics in here. Generally speaking, I'd suggest limiting your number of risky picks in total, and on each line. If you look for players that typically play 19+ games each year, are not priced at career highs, and have more than one year of averaging above the following thresholds, you'll be in very solid shape: def 91, mid 109, ruck 106, fwd 96.

- I think using this rule would suggest that you should be looking to upgrade or downgrade the following: Houli, Roberton, Docherty, Broadbent, S Mitchell, maybe Ceglar (unless you plan to trade him). There are a couple of others that don't quite make the grade (eg Dahlhaus) but he seems to be an okay pick - at least he has a single year at a very high (not marginal) average for a forward. Good def picks seem to be in short supply for all of us, although Simpson is always very solid, and Smith is popular as a value option but with a year in the 90s under his belt. As a general comment, I would probably lighten your defs and boost your forwards or mids. The top defs rarely back it up year to year, although the mids normally do.

- Some people here who know the Hawks better than I do think Gunston is no longer a viable pick given Roughy's injury. Tippett may interest you, and he could give you some ruck cover. I quite like Boomer in the forwards as well - he has a great scoring and games-played record, and starts quite cheap this year.

- I'm not sure about Crowley. He appears to be low priced, but he has never been a good scorer. You could try Wells at around the $240k range. He comes with injury risk, but has a good scoring record and a great early draw.

- Barlow would be better in the fwds. High-priced dual position players should generally be picked in their lower-scoring line.

- Danger and Priddis are both good mid picksin my view, although I would plan to upgrade to them, rather than start them. Ablett, Pendles and Rocky are all cheaper picks that I think will beat Priddis and at least match Danger. Most people are locking in Ablett and Rocky with confidence, and I think Pendles should be similarly popular - he's a gun, and so reliable.

- Personally, I wouldn't worry about the byes quite as much this year - I'd keep an eye on them but not structure my whole side around them. They're quite late, so hopefully our sides will be getting close to fully upgraded by then anyway :)

I hope this helps - good luck on your SC return!

Nice first up effort mate! You'll learn heaps on here as the SCS community is extremely insightful.

DEF: Don't mind the Houli and Docherty picks, PODs and can't see either going bellow 90 which tbh is a pretty good thing to have at this stage, as many of us are confused with what will be the best DEF setup. Got Bartel myself, for me he is a DEF lock, definitely drop Broadbent, spend that money in the MIDs. Roberton is an interesting one, personally not sold he will back up his career best year, but you never know. Could be potentially better picks than him around, maybe a Kade Kolodjashnij, or a Yeo/Smith type. Obvously we aren't sure too much on rookies at this stage, but I think you'll be able to find playing and cheaper rookies than Smedts and Whitecross, Hartley form the Bombers may be one. Obviously we need to NAB Challenge to help make the rookie decisions, so not too much stress.

MID: Danger, nothing needs to be said. Must say I like the Priddis pick and am toying on how to get him in myself. Libba nice, should score well and make coin/if not be a keeper for the year. Barlow goes to your FWD line, not sold on Mitchell given the exact reasons Tomuhawk suggests, you could maybe turn him into a Ablett or Pendlebury for that ultra premium scoring, or maybe to a JPK who is a similar price. I think you definitely need to get Rockliff in, maybe he could be the Mitchell trade. Rockliff a must in my book, and if he goes bang then your season is over before it even starts if you don't have him.

RUC: Can't go wrong with Goldy, I think look elsewhere with Ceglar. Maybe Lobbe, or go for top end set and forget in a premium like Jacobs/Martin. Maybe you could consider Tippett at R2 and then look to switch him forward.. Worth a thought, but definitely look elsewhere with Cegs.

FWS: Martin lock, no need for discussion. Dahlhaus I like, I was killed by not having him last year, currently in my side. Barlow switches FWD so have him in there. Maybe I would also consider going Gunston to someone else, as listed above he struggles without Roughead (only a small sample size though). A few options around that price, just a matter of getting the right one. Simpkin is an interesting one, wait and see how Essendon setup in my opinion and his NAB Challenge form. Same as DEF for rookies, just a matter of wait and see during the NAB etc.

Overall: Nice first up crack mate. Only needs a few tweaks and you're well on your way to a really good season. Plenty to like.
With the byes, remember that there is 12 rounds prior to them, so you'll already be doing upgrades to your side, so as you near byes, then start to consider who you are trading in in terms of premiums to be able to field a best 18 for each of the rounds. Goodluck :)

I should have been clearer with my original question though - I was wondering whether anyone has an informed opinion on whether training on the bike is "near enough" to running until this time of year, or whether it should seriously hinder someone like McVeigh?
One of my old coaches always used to say the only way to get better at running, is to run.

Can't compare bike kms to running kms.
Totally agree with BigRuss here, if you miss 3 out of 5 months of pre-season in this day and age you are well behind the eight ball. I also noted he only 'started' running last week, so it will be a while till he gets up to normal loads. That said, he is a smart player and has a decade of pre seasons behind him. I'll definetly be keeping a NAB watch on him, but at this stage looks more attractive as an upgrade.
Fitness theory would concur with this idea, as per the training principle of specificity. To maximise chronic adaptations (training effects) for running, the athlete really needs to run. Cycling uses similar muscle groups but in a different way to running, so while there will be some gains, they are likely to be limited.

McVeigh therefore would need to get back running soon to best prepare himself - although in his favour is the fact that he has completed many pre-seasons so his base level of fitness would be quite high. I would say he might be one to keep on the watchlist at this stage, especially given the reduced rotations and no sub rule will make the game more aerobic in nature this season.
Thanks folks, this is useful. He's still in my side for now, but probably only until I find a replacement I'm happy with. Open to suggestions on who should join Bartel, Simpson and Smith!

Thanks mate!

I agree I'm missing a super premo but I've never had Ablett in my side (has been a blessing in disguise over the past two years) and I'm worried about Pendlebury with Swan spending more time forward, more midfielders going through the Collingwood centre and the natural downward progression of players. I do agree though that Ward is the one to cull, just don't have the faith in Dependelbury/GAJ like some others do

After doing a little more reading, I've decided to change my team.

DEF: Kade Kolodjashnij becomes Daniel Rich. This change was simply due to price structure.

MID: Reading that Jaeger O'Meara is probably going to play in the NEAFL in round 1, I removed him and Brad Crouch due to structure. In came Nathan Fyfe and Ollie Wines.

RUC: I switched Nic Naitanui to Mark Blicavs; but it remains a very close decision. Rowsus's table of analysis shows that Nic Nat might struggle with West Coast's difficult start to the season.

FWD: Out went Dayne Zorko (Usually a slow starter - some concerns with his position in team), Lance Franklin (Durability and consistency) and Matthew Leuenberger (Injury concerns). In came Michael Barlow, Zach Merrett and a rookie.

----

The main issue I have is a lopsided forward-line to midfield. Right now, with Rookies as placeholders; I'm hoping to get as many DPPs as possible in the team - if I have 4 MID/FWD DPPS, I figured, that, at least to begin with, it doesn't matter if I play 2 in the midfield and 2 up forward, or 1 in the midfield and 3 up forward. But depending on what rookies are viable, I may have to change my structure and sacrifice one of my Midfield Premiums. I certainly believe that Ollie Wines has a far better scoring potential than anyone of a similar price up forward; but he might have to go if I don't get lucky with rookie selections.

This is my team so far. Thoughts would be appreciated.

DEF: KK, Docherty, Bartel, B.Smith, Brown, Byrne (Hartley, Wagner)
MID: Pendles, Ablett, JPK, Rockliff, Wines, Liberatore, B.Crouch, Hopper (Jansen, Mathieson, Hibberd)
RUC: Blicavs, Lobbe (King)
FWD: Martin, Dahlhaus, Barlow, Anderson, Simpkin, Kerridge (Petracca, Sumner)

1.8k cash leftover. Ones in bold will hopefully be keepers.
Ey all. Just was interested in feedback on my team as I missed out earlier. Anywhere where I am weak or could improve my structure?

My strategy this year is to just completely avoid KP premo's and just stick to midfield/running types.

SOG - That is a very sound strategy indeed!

Re your team, structure and keepers are fine and like the fact you've selected a few 200k+ players to give you flexibility to select rookies post NAB. The only weak point I can see at the moment is your Blicavs/Lobbe combination in the Rucks, but am being picky.

Team is well balanced with some nice PODs and should provide a good platform to build around...well done!

Thanks THCLT. Yeah I must be honest the ruck is my biggest concern. Hate using trades on rocks but obvious plan is to turn Lobbe into Goldy at some stage

I can't really fault that team to be honest, only concern for me would be your starting rucks of Blitz and Lobbe.
Another thing I would change is probably not having Buddy and Tipp together, as they are both prone to missing games.

Latest cut of my team... Rucks my biggest concern but I'm not sold on who will be the top 2 rucks for the season. I could see any of Goldy, Martin, NicNat, Jacobs, Mumford, Lobbe ending up the top 2 rucks but as for which who knows. This is my reason for starting with Tippett/Lobbe as I see these 2 being the best value and Tippett will eventually become F6/7. This structure also allows me to start the big 5 mids (subject to fitness). Thoughts...

D - Bartel, Birchall, Yeo, Smith, Ashby, Brown (Hartley, Collins)
M - Fyfe, Danger, Pendles. GAJ, Rocky, Libba, Crouch, Ahern (Petracca, Freeman, Keays)
R - Tippett, Lobbe (Wyatt)
F - Dusty, Barlow, Buddy, Wells, Simpkin, Kerridge (Burton, Pickett)

Interesting. Are Joyce and Greenwood place holders or FD's?

I might have to have a little spell now until NAB starts.

Any feedback appreciated.

I am considering losing Birchall or Duryea if I can find another DEF rookie that looks ok and put those $$ into an extra forward
