Just an example of what your team would look like without the 2 top selections in the Rucks. Here's one I drafted a while back without Goldy and Martin at R1 and R2 respectively.

D: Boyd, McVeigh, Bartel, Smith
M: Dangerfield, Pendles, Ablett, TMitchell, Rockliff
R: Jacobs, NicNat
F: Dusty, Dahlhaus, Barlow, Harvey

I can't really fault that team to be honest, only concern for me would be your starting rucks of Blitz and Lobbe.
Another thing I would change is probably not having Buddy and Tipp together, as they are both prone to missing games.
Thanks for the feedback MMM.

I'm really agonising over the R1 and F4 positions.

For the longest time it was Goldy and Bird, but now Blicavs and Buddy.

Will hopefully get Goldy in the end, but I think the team is better overall without him at the moment.

First crack. 3k in the bank. Rookies obviously just placeholders.

Just finished reading the entire Danger thread and it's made me rejig everything to bring him in (including ditching Buddy & JPK). Gut wrenching ... is it worth it for this:

B: Simpson, Laird, Bartel, Malceski, Dea, Brown (Hibberd, Adams)
M: Ablett, Dangerfield, Rockliff, Mitchell, Liberatore, Morabito, Mills (Jansen, Keays, Dunkley)
R: Mumford, Naitanui (Chol)
F: Martin, Barlow, Tippett, Wells, Simpkin, Petracca (Kerridge, Beech)

On the other hand, now that i've just typed it in, feels like there is a good balance here.

Pretty set on this team now - well until preseason, tell me your honest thoughts:

B: KK, Bartel, Birchall, Smith, Brown, Hartley (Bonner, Hibberd)
M: Dangerfield, Ablett, Pendlebery, JPK, Rockliff, Libba, Gresham, Cunningham (Matheison, Keays, Phillips)
R: Jacobs, Lobbe (Loerch)
F: Dusty, Dahlhaus, Barlow, Franklin, Kerridge, Petracca (Yarran, Adams)

Any comments would be grand!

Pretty standard I think at this stage! 14 keepers with Smith as the main Gamble.
I have concerns with starting Jacobs and Smith because of their tough opening draw.
Personally not convinced Lobbe will average enough to be worthwhile, but the strategy to use Lobbe to get Goldy later could work.

15 keepers is great but I'm a bit more skeptical on Smith and Harvey in this side.

After all that debate in support of starting Goldy, I've drafted a No Goldy side too!

D: Boyd, KK, Bartel, Birchall
M: Danger, Pendles, Ablett, Rockliff, Wines
R: Blicavs, Tippett
F: Montagna, Martin, Barlow, Franklin

Bank: $63k for rookies

I'm beginning to like Blicavs a lot more due to his M/R. Allows mid rookies or LTI midfielders to become Goldstein.

I actaully am tempted by the Harvey pick...if he stays fit it could be a master stroke. North will win plenty this year and take out a few sub scores and his average increases. Big gamble but so is buddy. if your risk profile is low across the team then I like boomer.

Your team looks very solid other than a few were I have a personal bias against...personally birchall is on my never again list - he loves a late out and often goes missing when the hawks thrash teams. and then there is he who must not be named (tippett) who I could never bring myself to pick as a crows fan! Tippett IMo will alwys get injured at some stage but the F/R is tempting I guess. With Blicavs as M/R are there any other M/R players to swap him with or would you only more himwith a trade say to bring in Goldy?

I'm Thinking of this G and R set up at the moment and would love to be able to follow through if the essendon side allows it

G,G, R,R Francis, Dea, (Brown -D/F, Hartley)
G,G,G,G,G,G,R,R (R,R,R)
G,G (R)
G,G,G,G, R,R (Kommer, Tipa -D/F - hopefully floating donut)

I doubt I'll follow through with a 2-6 def line but it would be fun!

I might have to have a little spell now until NAB starts.

Any feedback appreciated.

I am considering losing Birchall or Duryea if I can find another DEF rookie that looks ok and put those $$ into an extra forward

D: Kolodjashni, Macmillan, Birchall, Smith, Duryea, Brown (Brown, Rookie)
M: Pendlebury, Ablett, Gray, Rockliff, Cunnington, Libba, Wells, Kerridge (Rookie x 3)
R: Tippett, West (Currie)
F: Martin,Barlow, Rioli, Edwards, Kommer, Petracca (Rookie, Rookie)
Hi MudFlap - this is looking pretty good to me, although there are a few picks I would probably do a bit more thinking on:

- Birchall is interesting. If you think personnel/role changes at the Hawks help him by maybe 7+ per game, he looks a good pick. Otherwise he looks quite a marginal keeper and I'd consider downgrading or upgrading him.

- I'm not sure what the argument is on Duryea? Don't know a lot about him, but seemed to play as a small def all last year, which is SC unfriendly. If you're hoping for some/more mid time, I would probably have liked to see more evidence he would get it before starting with him. Not that cheap either - you basically need him to score at pretty close to his ceiling to date (99) to be a keeper.

- I understand the upside on MacMillan, but his injury record looks to be quite concerning. He might be an okay pick in a strengthened backline, but your defs are a bit risky at this stage (albeit that's the best line to make one or two your risky picks, generally).

- Mids look good except Cunnington. When I saw his name there I immediately checked who you barracked for ... my suspicion was confirmed :) That looks more like a "heart" than "head" call to me. You could potentially downgrade him to JOM/Crouch to strengthen other positions, and I'm not sure you'd lose too many (if any) points. On the other hand, I think Wells is a very attractive bet, and I have him.

- I understand there is some risk of West not being best 22. I don't really have a view myself, but others have raised this. If you think that's a small risk but still want to start him, getting Tippett into your forward line as cover would be one way to mitigate it. Lobbe is a cheap ruck option, obviously.

- I'm not sure about Rioli and Edwards. Rioli seems to be injury prone and/or less likely to score at keeper level, because his injury risk and his scoring seem to both be tied to his amount of time in the midfield. He's not a risk that appeals to me. How about Boomer? Also, Rowsus did some work that showed that Edwards does much better when Lids misses, so I'd say he looks better if that's likely. Zach Merrett could be a similar-priced option with good opportunity upside this year, and some good coaches like him a lot (I don't have him). Martin and Barlow look good to me.

Good luck :)

That's one good looking team. And if you reduced spend in Def with Boyd and McVeigh you could probably upgrade Harvey and TMitch, and that team would be smokin'.

Latest version, hopefully enough defensive rookies will "pop-up"

Boyd, KK, Bartel + 5
Fyfe, Pendlebury, Ablett, Selwood, Rockliff, Liberatore, B-Crouch + 4
Goldstein, Lobbe + 1
Barlow, Harvey, Tippett, Franklin + 4

Selwood to become ??? if not right for Round 1

Looks pretty good for a first crack mate :) The ones I would consider upgrading/downgrading would be McVeigh (interrupted pre-season - although a very solid pick if fit), Docherty (not proven at his price, although perhaps a reasonable bet in def), and Greene (some people think he's not best 22, and many seem to think he won't get the mid time he needs to score well).

I think this is quite well balanced. Lots of solid and a few slightly risky picks (Malceski, Mitchell, Mummy), but not too many in my view, and they're spread across the lines, which is good. You also have cover for a short-term issue for Mummy, which is nice.

Personally, I would probably look at downgrading Malco to a rookie and upgrading Mitchell to Pendles (who I would definitely pick ahead of Danger). That might leave you with enough cash to improve another keeper somewhere else (albeit I like your other picks), or to pick someone like JOM or Crouch.

Thanks Darkie, sound advice.

Like the Eski downgrade idea to bolster the midfield more. I've noticed that my team is 4 mid guns + Libba, which puts me behind about 90% of other teams who run with the 5+1 structure. The other thing that has become noticeable is that in order to have 4 decent backs, 5+1 in the mids and 4 decent forwards, you have no choice but to run with Lobbe or a similar priced guy in the rucks. This is the biggest headache for me right now as I'm really not keen on Lobbe.

I think that's a fair comment re all those keepers on other lines necessitating Lobbe or similar. I guess if that wasn't the case though, you'd have 15 keepers plus Libba, which would be huge for a starting side!

Although I think it's a good idea to check your number of keepers (to ensure you don't have to do too many upgrades to do), I do think it's important to bear in mind that not all keepers are created equal. You could probably get to 16 if you went for a handful of more fringe-y picks (Danger to Ward, and so on) but your side would be worse off for having done so. My view is that more of the very top scorers will be required this year, because we have a lot of cheap premiums to start with, and cash generation should be better than it has been for a while, because of the absence of the sub and the availability of Essendon players at low prices.

Time for me to bare my soul. Pretty settled with this structure I think. I know there is value to be had with the mid-pricers, but for me, there are too many unknowns surrounding how they will perform coming back from long term injuries.

Have gone for guns and rookies, rookies are obviously dependent on NAB performances.

Def: I think Yeo, KK and Laird continue their upward trends, Bartel to be there and there abouts again with the top defenders

Mids: Love Mitchell and have faith that he has cemented his spot in the best 22, rocky/gaj underpriced and value for money, Pendles and Danger the are stars

Rucks: I think Nic Nat has another level in him, with a full preseason under his belt and injuries behind him. Jacobs is solid and you know what you are going to get

Forwards: Pretty self explanatory, I think Tippet will get a bit more ruck time and will continue his form from the end of 2015

Good to see more familiar names back on the SCS website, must means SC season is just around the corner! :)

I like where you're going with that team, a potential 4-5-2-4 Keepers structure is a pretty solid platform to build your season around. First team I've seen with none of Libba/BCrouch/JOM, you and I could be genius.

Nothing to fault at this stage and you have a few unique picks in there to keep things interesting. Just be aware that both your rucks are in for a 'tougher' than expected opening according to the fixture rating.

Well done and all the very best for the season ahead mate.

What's your thinking on Libba/JOM/Crouch, Thanh?

None of them are 'bad' picks as they potentially all have upsides, in particular, Libba. However, they just don't fit into my desired structure for my team. Looking back at my finished team from past years, I've always had a few of the less desirable players ending up as my best 22, most being MP players I selected from the start which for one reason or another ended up staying in my team for the duration of the season.

This year, I've compiled a list of players I want in my final team and selected my starting keepers from that lot. I've also allowed myself 2-3 'gut feel' or 'calculated risk' selections depending on how the Rookies fall post NAB. At the moment, I'm sitting on a team with 12 'bankable' keepers, 3 'gut feel' selections in my team and a 200k+ rookie on each lines except the Ruck.

I'm willing to start without those 3 mentioned players for now, but will use corrective trades early if I need to depending on how my team starts.
