Like IDIG, I too am intrigued by the pros & cons on team structure and potential rookie cash generation discussion. Everyone will have their own take on what they perceived as the best viable strategy and/or approach, that's what separates this great game from others. There's no set rules on what's best for any particular year, and every year will be different and take a unique course of their own.

The above discussions prompted me to look back at the last 3 years to see how these rookies have faired. I'm only looking at rookies with a starting price of <150k who started in round 1 and played a minimum of 8 games. I've also added how they went for the first 8 rounds as this is one of the critical component for cash generation. I'll let the statistics speaks for themselves...

Think of suspension bottom line is u can't pick a team and be 100% guarenteed they will play every game with an average you would find acceptable for a keeper. Just out of curiosity what did last years winner end up on as a total points? Might be able to work backwards from that to come up with a completely different structure and team to get a maximum point target

Nice work THCLT, one factor now that we must also acknowledge is the sub vests are gone, this may/should help our rookies I'd have thought.

Personally I'm hoping for a fair few DEF and FWD rookies and around 4-5 MID rookies that do well, which ideally I nail from round 1.

Had a quick look back through the forums, I couldn't find anything which suggests the total points scored for the winner, although i may have been looking in the wrong places. I'm pretty sure someone here will have a link to the HS article where they talk to the winner, or a screenshot of the final standings etc.

THCLT - what conclusion should we draw from those numbers? To me it looks like we are all going to be pretty disappointed when our starting rookies pump out averages of ~50-65. If you are starting with 6+ on the field you are leaking a lot of points on players who could potentially be dropped at any moment. There are a few each year who go 80+, but it looks pretty rare.

For mine it shows there is merit in selecting a couple of the $200-250k 'rookies' who are likely to score better and have better job security. The mid price madness thread implies that the cheaper guys are better "value" because they reach $150k profit faster, on a worse average. This is true, if everyone plays every game. In the tables above, 55% of players played all 8 games in 2015, 35% in 2014 and 41% in 2013.

Like you said, there's no right or wrong. You can either load up on the super premiums and go the bargain rookies, or try to save money on your top end to squeeze in the first round draft picks. Nobody knows which is the right path year on year until the guys actually take the field and it's too late.

Also note he had 2 trades left to use during that final round, while we all had a Goldy donut he traded him out to Nic Nat from memory who smashed out 133.

Out of interest, does anyone know where the mid season leader ended up? This was they guy with the big lead that was trading premiums sideways during the byes. Would be interesting to see how far away he fell off the perch.

Is there anyway to add price after 8 rounds to that table THCLT? I did a rough trade plan (plans never work aha) and going off the basis that my rookies will reach an average price of 300k by the byes I'll nearly be able to get to the team I want during the bye rounds.

You have to be in the hunt early, by round 5 it could all be over. That's why I'd shy away from too many speculative picks.

That's exactly why I've learnt not to 'fall in love' or become too caught up with my team structure pre-NAB. By all means, have a planned structure (multiple at that), and wait for the NAB for the Rookies to reveal themselves. Ultimately, it's the Rookies playing round 1 which will more than likely determine our starting team structure. Also, there's always a bolter for round 1 who hasn't played any NAB matches and is not on our radar, think back to A Brayshaw of last year.

Personally, I have 8-10 Keepers which are locked into my team pre-NAB. I then use the NAB matches to monitor the likely starting Rookies on each of the lines and slot them into my team as the matches rolled by. Prior to the start of round 1, I generally keep of shortlist of those which are more than probable to get an early start just in case they don't make it for round 1. I then fill my team with these rookies and finish it off with the best available Keepers depending on team structure.

In summary, have a desired team structure in mind but also be flexible enough to change it slightly if rookie selections doesn't go in your favour.

As you know I was tracking the progress of the leaders in contention pretty closely from round 18 onwards.

I don't have that information handy to provide you with a quick answer, if you're really keen to know, you can go to tooserious.net to find what each of those players were worth after round 8.

In theory, you're looking to make between 150-200k off the basement rookies before deciding to trade them so I'd say that a few of them would've been traded out of your team by round 8.

Also, the MBRs is a bit later this year with the first of them commencing in round 13.

Do you recalled what the team name was?

HARD TO BEAT was the team but not sure where it ended up finishing. I only have records which show that he dropped to 22nd after round 16.
