Went to ivan maric and ivan soldos cousins wedding. Got to love when one of the premier afl ruckman comes up to u and says you're such and such lol. He hung around me a good 45 mins lol. Nice feeling when he corrects me about spanking him in yahoo epl fantasy 10 years ago... "nah that was more than 10 years ago i was spewing" good insightinthe rigours of afl footy lol.

About 2 seasons ago when there was rumours of vlaustin being a late out i messaged his cousin to ask ivan. He messaged back saying yeah hes not playing but he ended up playing. So i assumed his cousin never asked. I brought it up lol. He goes actually i remember that and hardwick lied to him lol

Anyone keen on a draft league at 5:15 tonight? 5 spots left in an 8 team league, would be nice to get a few more teams. This will be my first draft league, just a bit of fun- still competitive though ;)

Does anyone have access to the HS article today where it uses CD to rank the midfield depth of each club, if so, could they post the relevant bits?

There is a nice little Chrome add on that lets you get around the paywall ;)

I think this is the article you're talking about right?

COLLINGWOOD has the most midfielders of any club in the competition but are they any good?

The Magpies have 17 midfielders on their list with Scott Pendlebury the only player rated elite by Champion Data.

Dane Swan and Steele Sidebottom — both above average — round out the top three midfielders at coach Nathan Buckley’s disposal.

The problem for the Magpies, who many expect can break into the top eight on the back of a strong NAB Challenge, is too much is left on too few.

In short, the midfield unit as a whole lacks quality despite its apparent depth.

The midfield brigade is ranked 10th overall and 7th when only taking into account the top six players.

Champion Data rates Adam Treloar in the top 35 per cent of all midfielders in the competition (above average) with Levi Greenwood, Taylor Adams and Jack Crisp slotted in the average category.

Oh and before the Black and White Army cries foul... age and experience is not an excuse for quality.

Consider the Western Bulldogs who despite having one of the youngest lists boast the fourth best overall midfield ahead of Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and West Coast.

Sydney has the best midfield in the competition according to Champion Data’s quality ranking with Josh Kennedy the top-rated ball winner.

The Swans rank third when taking into the account the top six players behind Fremantle and a Geelong side bolstered with the addition of Patrick Dangerfield during the off season.

Richmond and North Melbourne are ranked 9th and 13th overall for midfield quality.

It should come as no surprise Essendon and Carlton have the worst ranked midfields in the competition.

The Gold Coast midfield is ranked 14th in overall quality but 6th when taking in only the best six on-ballers thanks to the Gary Ablett.
There's a table too I'm not sure how to post it

Club-Quality-Depth(All Listed Mids)-Quality(Best Six Mids)-Top-Rated

For mine this information is misleading / irrelevant. "Depth" by the definition above refers to players who are listed as midfielders, meaning they have 35% or more game time in the middle (I assume). Sure, if 5 of your starting mids get injured you would love to have like for like replacements. The more relevant part which isn't in the table is how many non midfielders are able to rotate through that area of the ground on game day.

Putting my Hawthorn blinkers on, we have the 8th best quality of our top 6, and the 15th worst "depth". If I gave you that stat alone without saying who it was, there's no way you would believe that list had won the last 3 flags in a row. Players like Roughie, Rioli, Breust, Burgoyne, Birchall, Puopolo, Dureya are all best 22 players who roll through the midfield week in week out. To me that is a far better representation of "depth".

I think the modern game is all about versatility. Gone are the days where you can load up on any single line and think it will get you all the way.

Anybody know how many players per team there will be in the final squads for games this week?

I remember reading that the squads will be less than the first 3 weeks. I think it's either the normal 22 or perhaps 24?

6 interchange in round 3, therefore 24.

Port Adelaide will be playing some players for a half only (inside info) even within the 24. Other teams may well also.

Recap from today's ask the coach segment with Sydney coach John Longmire

- McVeigh to play seniors in Round 2 or 3
- Mills to play off half back for majority of season, may move into the guts later on
- Rohan, McVeigh and Z. Jones are the three players nominated by Longmire to be playing off half back
- When asked on how he will structure the midfield, Longmire stated "everyone will be playing a variety of roles" when needed. Which can be seen early in the NAB with the likes of JPK spending stints up forward

Is he SC relevant? Some pre pre-season hype around here, seems to have cooled.

I'm still hyped on him after seeing those NAB stats. I watched bits of the replay of his NAB game but his DE was terrible in all honesty. It was a windy day though. Still on the watch list for me. Seems a decent stepping stone option around byes/quasi keeper. With the lack of rookie options I'm considering other ways to make another $150k

Bit of a random question:

I'm in a work league with a bunch of European contractors who've never heard of AFL. They all play some form of fantasy soccer, but obviously never supercoach.

Rather than be completely useless, i'm going to do a "Supercoach 101" over beers next Friday arvo.

What advice should I give?
