Only seen and heard about headlines of Port playing a premiership points game in China but not giving up a home game from Adelaide to do it.
Can anyone explain how this is happening?
Sounds really odd to have signed some contract without being a game they are considered "host".
When would it be played too? Maybe in a bye round later in a season

St.Kilda playing a few Anzac Day games in New Zealand which is closer than Perth for most clubs is one thing.
Playing a season game in China is something else.
They can't give up any more home games because of there contract with Adelaide Oval. They've already had discussions with other clubs before yesterday's announcement, but ultimately its up to the AFL commission to decide.

James Brayshaw had some interesting words on the matter.

So if they have had discussion with other clubs surely some club has already agreed to move a designated home game to China and if so, which club and why has that club not already announced they are doing it?

The whole thing seems to be very odd for AFL football.

Is Melbourne still being run by the AFL at admin level ?

Just going off what Koch said on AFL 360 last night. The AFL commission will make the decision on who the other team is. If it was to happen my guess would be one of the AFL's babies in the Giants or Suns.

That would be very weird if so. An expansion club trying to be make a foothold for new audience in places like Western Sydney give up a home game and lessen the opportunity for people new to AFL in NSW to goto a game in NSW.
Gets more odd by the moment to find out what is actually going to go on.

What happened to the good ol' VFL? :)
Big bad VFA took it over....and now calls itself VFL. :p
They decided if we cannot have Sunday football to ourself we are at very least going to steal your name.

Carlton and Hawthorn I believe played in China at some stage in mid to late 1980's. Remember seeing it late at night from there on channel 7. An alternative to the games the league generally played in London around that time of year.

The Chinese might care more than people in Sydney

Oi!

Having said that, seems that a fair amount of GWS games aren't in Sydney anyhow...

They seem to be having an each way bet between Western Sydney and Canberra.
Would not surprise me in 15 years time they became the Canberra Giants if the Western Sydney region experiment was ditched.

I've heard a rumour that it is in fact the Suns that will be playing Port in China

Great Waste of Space Giants I think works well for a Canberra team :)

Yeah ive heard the same thing too mate, to be played last round of the year with the gap between round 23 and finals becoming permenant.

Its a big deal for Port, if its run properly could see a massive surge in memberships. Like or hate Kochie, you cant deny the bloke is a good businessman.

Not entirely sure how the Home/Away thing works out but suspect its the same principle as teams selling home games to Tasmania/Canberra/NT and the like.

Suns make the most sense geographically too as they are the closest to China :p
