not much talk on here about Gaz's 300th game on Sunday (I have always wondered why we celebrate milestone games before the game starts though , and not at the conclusion of the game when it is actually played)

one of the modern day greats , does the fairytale happen next year and he goes back to the Cats for a last shot at another premiership.

Danger , Jelwood , Ablett

every bit as good as Aker , Black , Voss (+ Lappin & Power)

Cousins , Judd and Kerr (Embley)

Pendles , Swan , Beams (+ Daisy and Side bottom) was not too bad either

The debate then is who was better Senior or Junior , still remember watching Senior kick 8 on a wing in a state game (1984 I think) and was at the G when he kicked 14 and Salmon kicked 10 at the other end.

Was mesmerised watching Ablett.

Remember getting to the ground early, about 50,000 there watching the Reserves , thought wow they are keen , then realised Timmy Watson was running around in his comeback game.

Ablett , Carey , Dunstall , Lockett they were the days.

Well done Gazza on 300 games (st the end of the game)

Great effort young Gazza.
I remember going to some early final at Docklands in early 2000's looking at young Gazza and thinking hope he can be half as good as his Dad. Well, he has done that and more. Probably 65% as good.:p
Great effort to get to 300 and one of the best midfielders of last 20 years.

I will say one thing that struck me in last week is his Dad would not have put up with that physical crap on weekend he copped. He intimidated opposition players not just with his skill but his brutal attack on man when he felt the need too.

Not every player is a physical brute too. Gazza Jnr great player all the same.
Well done little bald master. Hope you notch up another 50 games before this wonderful innings is done.
Unlike your great old man you got to experience premiership glory and that is what you play for the most.

Senior was ferocious.

This modern day **** where players knock in and punch players for the sake of it has to stop , generally after you score a goal someone comes up and punches you in the gut.

Always thought striking was a reportable offence and any contact outside 5 metres was a free kick.

Just takes one umpire to start playing free kicks and it will all stop.

Beat your man fairly.

My memory is fading Geelong lost 1989 (what a epic) , was it 92 to Eagles and 93 to the Blues ?

Interesting Junior was a forward for the first 3-4 years of his careers.

Different players, different era but I would go.

3 . Ablett senior
2 . Ablett junior
1. Nathan (had little interest in the game)

Interesting Senior played 6 games for Hawthorn , then went back to bush football.

Thank God Geelong coaxed him into giving it another go.

My favourite Ablett story was when Tommy Hafey was aked why no action was taken against Gary Ablett Snr for turning up 2 weeks late for pre-season training. Hafey's answer was something along the lines of "Well, what can you do? He turns up 2 weeks late, and out runs everybody, and out jumps everybody. It's hard to say he should have been here!".
Of course, pre-season in those days was a bit different to how it is these days!

As a Carlton Supporter I cannot remember there being a grand final in 1993.

AFLX on its way: Footy 'Big Bash' set for September

It’s a fast-paced, high octane version of our game and it will be a new way to view AFL

THE AFL is planning to launch its version of cricket’s Twenty20, with a series of matches involving non-finalists in September this year.

Under the proposal, the Saturday after round 23 - when the top eight teams are given the bye - would be set aside to launch AFLX, a fast-paced, scaled-down version of traditional football.

The AFL recently alerted clubs to its plans, and on Thursday night confirmed its September launch hopes for the radical concept.

"We are currently investigating the opportunity of using the Saturday of the bye round to showcase AFLX via the best players from teams which have missed the finals," AFL football operations manager Simon Lethlean told The Footy Show.

"We are exploring this with the clubs, and have contemplated incentives to play and prize money.

"We are very excited about AFLX.

"It’s a fast-paced, high octane version of our game and it will be a new way to view AFL."

AFLX would be played on soccer-sized pitches, have seven players per side (with three or more per side on the interchange), and consist of quarters lasting no longer than 10 minutes.

Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn said he liked the plan, but hoped he wouldn’t be playing at the launch competition.

"If I’m not playing finals, and Melbourne don’t make finals, it would be a great concept," he said on Thursday night.

"I wouldn’t mind the IPL format, where you can go play for a different team … if you look at the IPL and the Big Bash, the guys love the Vic Bushrangers but some of the guys end up playing for the Queensland Twenty20 team.”

One concept under consideration would see clubs pay a fee to enter the inaugural AFLX event, with the entry fees pooled to help fund prizemoney.

It is known the AFL has looked at the model used by Sydney horse racing officials in their creation of 'The Everest', a race which will carry $10million of prizemoney, largely funded by entry fees to the race paid by owners of competing horses.

What is AFLX?

Played on a soccer-sized oval
Played between two sides of seven, three on each interchange bench
Ten-minute quarters
No centre bounces (kick-ins from full-back after each goal)
One umpire

Interesting concept perhaps from this season. I'm not sure how it'll affect Mad Mondays though!

A few years back we had a ghost ship team thread that Idig started:

http://www.supercoachscores.com/threads/668-Project-Ghost-ship-Help!?highlight=Team+Ghost+Ship

Well anyway my girlfriend was keen to see what Supercoach was about this year..... for about two rounds.
So we can have a play with the team if people are interested, it has 28 trades and is ranked about 140000  here's the link for the team: http://supercoach.adelaidenow.com.au/afl/classic/other_teams/?tid=27892

Basically looks like this:

Def: Laird, Marchbank, M.Williams, Newman, Vince, Hampton (McGrath, Stewart)
Mid: Dangerfield, Bontempelli, Ward, Beams, SPP, SPS, Langford, Fox (Barrett, Florent, Pickett)
Ruck: Goldy, Gawn (Pruess)
Fwd: Dahlhaus, Greene, Betts, Watts, Stringer, Butler (McCarthy, Eddy)

Ooh, this could be interesting!

A few thoughts:

- There are more trades left than week to use them, so I'd use every trade from here, first for immediate upgrades/downgrades, and then for sideways trades if there are no superior options.
- Cash generation is going to be an issue with the second wave of rookies missed, and few good ones still to come.
- There's a decent base there with the following players I'd be quite happy to keep ... Laird, Newman, Danger, Bont, Ward, Goldy, Gawn, Dahl and Greene, and a few you would be okay with.
- First priority for me would be culling mature cows or maxed out mid pricers to get some of that cash reinvested, preferably in some top end but discounted names. Fortunately Lloyd, Selwood, Zorko and others fit these criteria. JJK and Beams himself may as well in the coming weeks (I'd likely keep Beams).
- Second would be cutting anyone who is not playing and who you wouldn't want in round 23 (Hampton? I stopped thinking about him not long after I culled him )
- This week I'd probably cull Marchbank and SPS, who both have high breakevens and are mature cows. I'd get Lloyd first, perhaps a decent rookie if you can find one this week (Beech??), and bank cash to use next week and the following on Zorko, Selwood etc. If there's no decent rookie on the bubble, then maybe an FD, or more likely going early on someone like Witherden who looks good.
- I'd suggest waiting on top end talent like Doch to get cheaper, or make them a later upgrade, given cash will be an issue. I'd be prioritising number of upgrades, rather than magnitude of upgrades, at this stage, so long as you're still getting top 10 or so type players.

It would be interesting to see how much ground could be made up with this team, good luck!

If you talk to people who were at Geelong at the time while he was around a few of them would say he was the most talented player on the list by the length of the Flemington straight.

"More talent in his pinky ..." was the quote used from memory.

I guess desire outweighs talent eh.

I remember reading something similar once , I guess all the talent in the world does not mean much if the attitude , desire and willingness to work are not their.

I guess to much expectation as well.

Initial thoughts:
- Keepers (for this team) at this stage look like:

Def: Laird, M.Williams, Newman, Vince = need 2 defs and upgrades
Mid: Dangerfield, Bontempelli, Ward, Beams*, SPP = need 4/5 mids and upgrades
Ruck: Goldy, Gawn (Pruess) = ok, can downgrade Preuss to make cash
Fwd: Dahlhaus, Greene, Betts, Watts, Stringer = 1 + upgrades

- Generate a bit more cash
- I would go a bit leftfield and hope to do well on big scores.

How about:
- Beams and Stewart to Gray and Witherden (leaves 471 into R16)
- Barrett and Preuss to Deluca and Strndica (leaves 869 into R17)
- SPS + 300 = Neale, Langford + 300 = Zerrett (leaves (269 into R18)
- Hampton + 75 = JJ, SPP + 100 = Selwood (leaves 90 into R19) and

D: Laird, Vince, JJ, Newman, Williams, Marchmark (Mcgrath, Witherden)
M: Dangerfield, Bontempelli, Ward, Gray, Neale, Zerrett, Selwood, Deluca (Fox, Florent, Pickett)
R: Gawn, Goldy (Strn)
F: Dahlhaus, Greene, Betts, Watts, Stringer, Butler (McCarthy, Eddy)

I would then go 1-up 1-down on Marchbank/Mcgrath/Mccarthy/Butler/Florent to get the last few pieces into the team.
