I'm warming to him in the last few weeks. And it's exactly because of the exercise Jay suggested, in naming the top 10 Def's for the year.
I can easily see him making the top 10 total points list, and being just outside the top 10 averages.
Given once we get outside Goddard and Gibbs everyone is guessing on this player improving, or that player playing more than 17 games this season, Newman seems like a bit of value.
I can't see too much downside, outside of a LTI.
JS - check
History of scoring in Gun status - check
Potential change of role - check
Quality user of the ball - check
At his price, even if he stinks it up, I can't see him dropping below 70/game, which means you can't lose too much money. Even at 70/game he will outscore most Def Rookies until you can upgrade him. The other side is, it is easy to see him getting up around, or just above 90 again.
Given the concern on number of games they will play, or what they will score, the other options just aren't as attractively priced as Newman.
He is sitting in my team right now, and that's a likey from me. :)
I'm giving Newman serious consideration for much of the same reasons. Last year not pretty obviously, but first week NAB cup was encouraging which if it carries through could see some good value. Watch/Likely for me at this stage (i.e fence sitting),,,

Watch but boy he's tempting. If all reports a true and teams start putting their focus into the Cotchin, Deledio, Martin's of the world, he could get released to do his thing. What i like about him is he doesn't need a heck of a lot of it to score well.

Watch. And yes I have a lot of players on 'watch'.

Simply he is cheap considering his consistency of averages for a number of years prior to last year. I don't think 31 is too old.

But he is competing with a couple of other potential payers from other lines in my team costing in the 400's and there is only a finite number that one can select.

Was just about to ask for people's thoughts on him :). Voted watch and was just playing around with my side and he has found his way in along with Maloney. Don't know whether to go Newman, Maloney and Mayes or Terlich (or similar rookie), JPK and Byrnes.

I'd pick him if he was guaranteed to play on a wing but I'm not convinced. My feeling is he'll only play there when Grigg is off (about 15%).

I had Newman in my team for a while ... there is definitely some value there. I think you could compare him to someone like Fisher who has been consistently very good but dropped off last year. The difference with Fisher is that he was injury affected so in theory should bounce back this year and average 90ish.

The main concern i have with Newman is his age and the development of other defenders like Rance. Even someone like H.Taylor may come good as he becomes a more senior member of defense as the old guard at Geelong move out.

If i could fit 6 x 400+ players into my back then Newman would be one of them ..

Watch for now in a group with Fisher, Rance, Taylor and Broughton.

I think Fisher is different story to Newman, he played more of a lockdown role due to the departure of Dawson in the St Kilda backline

i might take a punt on newmen in ym supercoach team if he performs well in the nab cup then i will take a punt, he should play well, everyone thought that dustin fletcher would perform poorly when he was getting older but he hasn't slowed down. So might get him.:D

Newman's form of late has been outstanding, don't let Jay know though, he will be looking to trade him back in LOL.

We are all well aware of Jay's crush on good ol' Newmo.

It was about this time last year, when I traded in Chris Newman right before the byes thinking I had him at a steal at $414k.

Never again for me. I hold grudges against players. (Heath Shaw another one I'll never get; I also got Thomas last year and was burnt so I avoided him this year)
