………..Lyon was also hopeful Harley Bennell could overcome his horror run of soft-tissue injuries that have kept him to just two games in three seasons at Fremantle.
The number two draft pick suffered calf tightness at training last week but had otherwise enjoyed his best pre-season in years.
"He's on a program where we're building him up to three sessions a week," Lyon said.

"As he said, he's done more this year than he's done in four years – his body has allowed him to.
"He still hasn't been able to do the exact level of work of Andrew (Brayshaw) or Nat Fyfe, but he's not far off.
"I wasn't at a session on a Friday and Peter Bell rang me and they were all raving about how he trained. So it was exciting for Harley and us, but there's plenty of work to go."
geez I hope he gets himself right and on the paddock for Round 1 , half the price of Miles/Hanneberry/Libba and more than capable of matching there scores
Even at his cheap price it doesn't sound good. Although Freo have a good donut draw!

What are Carlton doing to Walsh? First Simpson, now Cripps, how much more pressure are they going to put on the Kid? :(

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2019/02/06/cripps-full-of-praise-for-amazing-walsh/

Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps is full of praise for number one draft pick Sam Walsh.
Speaking to the Herald Sun, Cripps doesn’t see why Walsh can’t play Round 1 and quickly become one of the Blues’ most influential players.

“We don’t want too much pressure on him, but I have told him there is no reason why he can’t be at that level just because he is 18. He understands that,” Cripps told the Herald Sun.
“He has been really impressive the way he’s come in, he just works his backside off.
“He is smart, he has got amazing endurance, he is a lot quicker than I thought he was, he is tough, he has got a light body, but he has already put a fair bit of size on.
“His game awareness is good, he is a good decision-maker. He has got a lot of attributes that make him an elite player. Once he starts playing people will understand why people are talking about him like this.”

Carlton fans should also expect VFL star Michael Gibbons to be added to the list before the start of the season.
Cripps has also been impressed with what he’s seen from the Williamstown midfielder.
"He has been really impressive," Cripps told the Herald Sun.
"He has brought a lot to the group and he’s a really good character.
"You can tell he’s scrapping for an opportunity the way he trains around the club and I love seeing people when they scrap for an opportunity give 100 per cent the whole time. I know one thing, he will give you a red-hot go.”
Gibbons will not be allowed to play in the JLT Series given he hasn’t been added to Carlton’s list just yet, but nothing would restrict him from being available for Round 1.

I love all these articles but seriously do we honestly think a player is going to come out and say omg why did we draft so and so , they have no.hope of playing AFL.

everything one of these kids does at training and all of a sudden they are a superstar

so much hype at this time of year , besides I don't think too many coaches are publically disclosing their game structures and that so and so is only going to play forward or mid etc etc

very easy to get fooled into believing everything that is published

Exciting draftee Bailey Smith has increased his training output after a modified start to the summer coming off an Achilles concern.
Smith will be hoping to form a midfield partnership with Tom Liberatore, who is on track for round one after a month of full training.
Libba following the ball around would make him much more appealing.

I agree it all has to be taken with a grain of salt but there are clues to be found.

Obviously

I like the ones with players that are honest and say yes I was hampered last season , couldn't train , carrying this and that etc etc.

Unfortunately a lot is still "hidden" from the general public for obvious reasons

What's annoying though, is that Carlton seem to single out Walsh and build him up so high, that he may feel pressured to live up to their expectations. I wonder how many sleepless nights he's going to have before each game?

I remember Melbourne building up Watts, that didn't work out to well, ay.

It is totally ridiculous first the media before the Draft , then the club's once they draft them

once in a generation player , 200 game player , future captain etc etc etc , huge expectations from a club , let them "ease" into a AFL environment learning to train 5-6 days a week , monitoring everything they eat and drink 24/7 , leaving home , family and friends , money in their pockets , learning and playing different positions , drop in there "ego" , anxiety if they will or won't make it .

50% are gone after 2 years of being drafted.

I remember listening to Roos saying ideally a draftee should just play 11 games of VFL in their first season whilst they are learning and adapting to the AFL environment

So what would you like them to say about Walsh? That he's doing fine? Just an average pre-season? I'm confused...
How about "he is adapting well to the demands of a AFL footballer , doing everything we have asked of him and looking forward to his AFL debut and hoping he has a very successful career in front of him "

lower the expectations and give him every chance to succeed

obviously they hype it up to give sponsors and supporters hope

The kid is literally leading all of their running drills alongside the Curnow brothers (known endurance guns). I don't know how you sugarcoat that, he's more than just adapting to the demands, he's a leading example! (albeit at Carlton :p)

fine

and at the moment he is yet to play a AFL game , like all the kids drafted , lower the expectations and let them (try) establish a career before calling them superstars

Lukosious is supposedly a once in a generation player.

Seriously give them a chance

Simply tell the truth, BUT don't say:

……… and quickly become one of the Blues’ most influential players........
.........He has got a lot of attributes that make him an elite player. Once he starts playing people will understand why people are talking about him like this.”...…...
..........can’t find a flaw in Sam Walsh’s game.........
........“I’m yet to see a weakness, to be honest,” Simpson said ………..
...……. He will slot very nicely into our midfield.”.........

You guys are analysing too much into what they said. Just let them say whatever they want... Pretty sure Dow was touted to be a star player in his 1st season too these things shouldn't even matter, let their JLT performance speak for themselves.
