Sorry - I think you are missing my point (which I probably didn’t make clear). I am not doubting he was in hospital. I am just doubting whether that would be the reason for his poor performance on Saturday.

If their was any risk that he would lack energy then surely they play Preuss (or another backup ruck if Preuss was injured).

It just sounds like an excuse to me.
Ahh getcha, yeah I don't think you can blame the poor performance entirely on the hospital visit... but it's likely a contributing factor.

Melbourne likely had no idea Gawn was going to be targeted like that (Though I should have after Lycett's superb effort on Gawn in the Prelim). They likely thought he was right to play, but being targeted like that which drains your energy in itself, and then add to that he might have just been a little off from the hospital visit... you can see how a poor effort like that occurs from him. He'll no doubt bounce back this week and try make a statement.

One out of the box I'd reckon. ... Gawn a down game and a midfield that barely gave a yelp ... all I saw was they got run off their feet by some hungry rookies ... who actually have some decent foot skills ...
You know I meant this when I’m saying this as a Crows supporter but Props to Port for getting them in and playing to the game plan with such hunger after a short amount of time. Looks like they got Watts to respond from his preseason shenanigans as well which went a long way towards this win.

No surprises likely at Geelong for Melbourne's Max Gawn
Peter Ryan March 27, 2019

The tactics Port Adelaide used to upset Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn in round one won't influence Geelong's approach towards the game's No.1 ruckman at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night.

Gawn was restricted to 13 disposals against Port Adelaide as the entire Port team physically harrassed him at every opportunity.

He admitted after the game he didn't handle the attention as well as he normally would, with the performances of Port's two ruckman Scott Lycett and Paddy Ryder eclipsing the All-Australian ruckman.

Port Adelaide outscored Melbourne by 26 points from stoppages as the Demons went away from the blue-collar ethic in the midfield that got them into last year's finals.

However Geelong coach Chris Scott said he suspected the tactics used against Gawn may have been overplayed.

He said the Cats would not lay out the approach they would take before the game, but were unlikely to be influenced much by what Port did in round one.

"When you are one of the best players in the competition you are going to get some extra attention from the opposition," Scott said.

"I don't think Max [Gawn] is particularly different to Clayton Oliver or Jack Viney or Patrick Dangerfield or Joel Selwood. They will expect treatment every week.

"I don't think it changes our approach that much."

Many significant moments in Gawn's career have occurred against Geelong. He earned three Brownlow votes for the first time when he played a breakout game against the Cats in 2015. He suffered a hamstring injury against Geelong in 2017 that derailed his season.

In 2018 he missed a goal that could have won Melbourne the match in round one against the Cats, then was off the ground late in last year's game at GMHBA Stadium because of the blood rule as Zach Tuohy kicked a matchwinning goal for the Cats after the siren. Gawn then played in his first finals win against Geelong at the MCG last season.

Geelong ruckman Rhys Stanley played well against Collingwood's Brodie Grundy in round one and was particularly influential late in the game. He worked well in tandem with forward Esava Ratugolea, who was playing just his ninth game for the Cats.

The Cats played four first-gamers last Friday night and all performed well enough to keep their spot although the Cats expect Cam Guthrie to be available for selection after suffering a calf strain late in the pre-season and experienced defender Lachie Henderson is also well in the frame.

Scott said Henderson played well in the VFL practice match last Friday against Collingwood and he would be a key part of their mix throughout 2019.

"There are a few factors that go into the decision-making of people with selection, particularly with key position players," Scott said.

"The approach we are trying to take with our defensive group is that we have a group of guys that are ready to play in any particular week and we are going to go with a combination of that."

ROB looked alright on the weekend. Any Crows people know how long Sauce is likely to be out? Those knees aren't getting any better - does his replacement get a decent crack? Could be a great rookie downgrade and trade in.

Thoughts on Goldy's form/upcoming opponents.

Adel: Sauceless - strong mids to counter
Ess: Bellcho/Clarke bit below ave
PTA: Solid rucks. Lycett 1-2 weeks? Should be back.
Carl: Below ave rucks unless kruz returns but underdone still
Geel: Ave ruck - strong mids
Syd: Ok ruck no world beater
WB: Below ave/young - strong mids

7/9 upcoming at Marvel. Anyone else think he can go on a nice run up to the byes or are those big scores behind him? Need westhoff options.

McEvoy also another who should be getting more respect than his ownership suggests. Kicks goals, takes contested grabs, and is averaging same as Gawn currently.

What are your hesitations mate? Being a North man
My hesitations are mostly SC related and not so much on Goldy himself. You'll probably use another trade to get Gawn/Grundy anyway, so might as well save the trade and get them now. Alternatively hold your breath and get Mumford, if he stays on the park he will at least make you some coin to make getting Gawn/Grundy easier. Goldy isn't monstering opposition rucks like years past, he seems slower or the game is quicker or his age i'm not exactly sure. He'll still be serviceable and throw out a 120 here and there but he probably won't dominate very often.

I also have Goldy and unless something changes i'll be looking to offload to Gawn/Grundy in 2-3 weeks.

Doesn't have a fashionable name or popular enough to be considered , jumped out last night when I was looking at averages and asking for BE.

Fair call. Very valid points. Westhoff after looking a genius in round 1 has put me in a pickle. Have Grundy and have no way of getting Gawn unless I cull a rookie early. Need about 120k to go Hoff to Gawn. Mummy definitely an option I'm looking at also.

Cheers for the input.

Just beware those looking to trade Gawn in this week, apparently there's a good chance Preuss is an in for the Demons, so if that's the case might want to wait a game or so to see if Gawn is affected in terms of his SC output.
Interesting BBS, not good news for Gawn and his owners.

Where did you hear this? Interested to know if you have heard from a specific source or if it's just a gut feel?

He was withdrawn from the Casey game and isn't injured, so the assumption is he's likely for the Swans. Hore and Stretch are chances as well on that basis, although they could also both just be emergencies.

Edit: the later two were pulled in the last quarter on the weekend. Preuss didn't play at all probably to be ready for the Thursday game this week.

My thinking is if Preuss comes in to be a forward target, and give Gawn the chopout that Weideman has been providing.

Tom McDonald is struggling big time at the moment and got a bad rolled ankle on Friday, I've been flat chat at work so no idea if there's been any updates on it, but Preuss could well have been pulled from the game to make sure he was right for the turnaround to the Swans game with TMc possibly under a cloud.

They need to pick Preuss and get him to crush in a tackle and crash to the bottom of packs anyone who trys to rough up Maxy.

Bit more mongrel needed and Preuss is a big, big unit.
I reckon Preuss will be in this week
