Gawn

Attended 45 ruck contests. range for last year was 60-80.
47% win rate vs 63% in 2018
hit out to adv 8 vs 15 last year

Grundy

attended 73 ruck contests. range last year 60-80
47% win rate vs 55% in 2018
Hit out to adv 7 vs 12 in 2018

for those thinking of trading Gawn out.

ruck contest in melb vs port game well below normal.
Gawn didn't look right at all even before Jonas hit him (maybe it was the stay in hospital and the heat , although he said on GameDay it wasn't the heat)

Lycett and Ryder and every other Port player physically hit him at every opportunity , something you think.other coaches will now do.

Think they need to pick Preuss to take the pressure off him.

They need to pick Preuss and get him to crush in a tackle and crash to the bottom of packs anyone who trys to rough up Maxy.

Bit more mongrel needed and Preuss is a big, big unit.

If it becomes the common tactic , I totally agree.

Move Maxy to FF , Tom Tom & Weidman can roam.

Or let Jones & Viney loose , I think they wouldn't mind a bit of rough n tumble.

Grundy looked fine.

Was getting to both ends of the ground but got called for marginal free kicks and missed some absolute sitters in front of goal.

With Westhoff forward I can turn Gawn into a forward/defender post rd2. If signs don’t improve I’d go Gawn->Worpel then back rookie->Newman/Williams.

What’s wrong with the other 21 blokes?

It’s on Gawn to step up and all his team mates. Don’t just bring in some tough guy and park him at FF.

I think Gawn and Grundy will be fine, just teams trying different strategies to put them off their game. Melbourne and Collingwood should now be aware and provide some more support to their rucks. I expect a sharp improvement in scores and focus from both rucks this week.

Not sure if there is a correlation; but the best rucks this week happened to kick a few goals (westhoff, nank, etc)
Goldie got 95 with 1 goal. if gawn/grundy kicked a goal they probably would of been around 100 too.
Should we be targeting high goal scoring rucks now?

Well this explains a lot... Doesn't make my selecting him as my C any easier as it's cost me a good start to the season. Would definitely have gone with Coniglio if I'd known this...

Max Gawn was admitted to hospital days before Melbourne’s Round 1 loss to Port Adelaide

Superstar Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn had a minor procedure to combat a skin infection only days before the Demons’ shock loss to Port Adelaide at the weekend.

The Demons today confirmed the All-Australian big man was admitted to hospital on Wednesday and required some antibiotics to treat a problem area on his leg.

But the club remains confident he will bounce back from a sub-par performance against the Power in the clash against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night.

Gawn, 27, was well below his best in the loss to Port Adelaide, but football manager Josh Mahoney confirmed the gun ruckman had an interrupted preparation for the Round 1 game.

“Max had a minor procedure and received treatment for a skin infection on his leg in hospital on Wednesday,” Mahoney said.

The infection in the lead-in was likely to have impacted Gawn’s energy levels in the season-opening loss, however the star ruckman was passed fit to play against Port.

Are we buying this?

I wonder what Brayden is thinking when they knowingly go into a game against 2 Rucks with Gawn going in under these circumstances....

I've thought about this ... POR were probably never going to win the ruck contest and put time into him which they have attempted before ... this time it paid dividends ... not so sure how often it will occur or even work though ...

Interestingly Footywire lists Gawn and Preuss as both being 109kg.
I heard today that Preuss is up to 120kg. Apparently the second heaviest player to ever play AFL (albeit I don't think he has played a game at that weight yet).

Great, I avoid watching Rugby in NSW because it is more physical then skilful, and now the AFL is heading that way

They got done and are looking for excuses, that’s why.
One out of the box I'd reckon. ... Gawn a down game and a midfield that barely gave a yelp ... all I saw was they got run off their feet by some hungry rookies ... who actually have some decent foot skills ...

Why would football manager Josh Mahoney deliberately come out in public and lie about him being in hospital?
Sorry - I think you are missing my point (which I probably didn’t make clear). I am not doubting he was in hospital. I am just doubting whether that would be the reason for his poor performance on Saturday.

If their was any risk that he would lack energy then surely they play Preuss (or another backup ruck if Preuss was injured).

It just sounds like an excuse to me.
