They will still pick him for the first test in Australia where he will do a Watson to secure his position ... I guess Harris doesn’t have to do much to hold his spot now?
I am going to email Hohns & Langer tomorrow and ask them if you don't have the balls to drop him , then at least play him down the order , gone beyond the joke now.

Probably come out and score a century in the 2nd Innings now.

Be interesting if Bancroft , Burns , Renshaw etc come out and score 4 centuries before the first Pakistan Test and demand to be picked.

I remember Mark Taylor on a really horrible run of form like Warner. Worst thing is he was captain. They very reluctant if a player clearly up to it in past and a senior member of team, to drop. How many Tests did Taylor go with no good scores? From memory he probably got runs at the moment they were probably about to drop him. For Warner, this second innings is surely the moment he needs to save his ass.

I think you’re spot on - personally I think he’s very unlikely to be dropped because we don’t even have one other good opener at the moment, let alone two! They don’t seem to like Burns for some reason, and the others haven’t shown much or are out of form too.

If Warner hadn’t performed in the World Cup I’d be much more worried that he wasn’t going to bounce back from this.

Maybe Khawaja does open in future series? Surely Labuschagne 3, Smith 4 is nailed down now, and Head 5 is probably the way forward in my view. Don’t think Khawaja is outside our top 6 batsmen, but nor is he a number 6 or 7.

Thats right - the details are here:

http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Players/PlayerSeries.asp?PlayerID=1732

- No centuries from Nov 1995 to Jun 1997
- Series averages between these dates of 39.75, 32, 17 and 16
- Strike rate of 29 through 14 dismissals in those last two series
- Only one 50 in 21 innings through that time
- After he finally scored a century again, followed it up with a 1, 2, 1 and 0!

so heading into the Pakistan series we are probably looking at this :-

1.
2.
3. Labuschagne
4. Smith
5.
6.
7. Paine (C)
8. Cummins
9.
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

retained the Ashes and gone backwards in the process (in my opinion)

spots are up for grabs if anyone can make Shield runs consistently

Wow, thanks for reminding me exactly how dire it was.
one 50 in 21 innings is really bad as an opener.
4 centuries (including the 334*) & 8 half centuries in 31 Innings after the 1997 England series before he called time , and along came Tugga as captain.

Which is what is keeping Warner alive. If Taylor had not shown you could get out of such horrible form, I doubt Davey would be still in team now.

Greg Chappell in his 70th to 75th Test had scores of 22, 0 , 0, 6, 12, 0, 61, 7, 32 and 24
Ten innings with just one half century.
Same summer I believe he had a horror run of one day innings in same period.
This was when schedule had ODI's and Tests mixed in schedule.

1981/82 v Pakistan , West Indies 7 ducks including 4 in a row

scored 201 before the 22.

Bradman failed in the Bodyline series , only averaged 56.57 ?

The biggest difference with the Tubby situation is we had a batting line up that could carry this type of lean trot. It is a different question as to whether it should but it certainly could. Unfortunately we don’t have that situation now.

Having said that I think Warner’s record in Australia will get him first crack at this summer along with the fact that there are no obvious alternatives.

I actually think Warner has endured a very bad run of luck in the way he is been getting out. Every mistake has been penalised with dismissal and other batsmen have been making plenty and managing to survive.
